WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:06.000 music 00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:11.000 Right now, I am sitting at the memorial for Ron Swartzendruber 00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:13.000 at Western Oregon University. 00:00:13.000 --> 00:00:14.000 music 00:00:15.000 --> 00:00:22.000 Ron was a great person. He worked for me for 21 years as a programmer. 00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:28.000 And he died suddenly of a massive heart attack one evening. 00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:31.000 I wanted to build this memorial for Ron 00:00:31.000 --> 00:00:37.000 because of his 21 years of service, his dedication. 00:00:37.000 --> 00:00:42.000 He was well liked by everyone across campus, 00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:46.000 always willing to pitch in and help wherever needed, 00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:49.000 just an overall great guy. 00:00:49.000 --> 00:00:55.000 Phase 1 of the project was getting the site ready. 00:00:55.000 --> 00:00:59.000 We went down about a foot, excavated the dirt. 00:00:59.000 --> 00:00:63.000 And then filled that with 3/4" minus rock. 00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:09.000 Facilties did that for us and they compacted that for about an hour. 00:01:09.000 --> 00:01:14.000 And then in Phase 2, we had the pavers ready. 00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:17.000 And we had a pile of sand. 00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:24.000 And we would lay down an 1/8 to 1/4" inch of sand to level those pavers. 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:28.000 And we had a laser light that we would use to 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:32.000 make sure all the pavers are at the same level. 00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:37.000 And each of those pavers weighs about 90 pounds. 00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:39.000 Not an easy job! 00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:43.000 Moving onto Phase 3 we began laying the brick. 00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:48.000 And that's really a fun part. You know you're getting somewhere when 00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:53.000 you've got all the pavers down and then you're laying out those bricks. 00:01:53.000 --> 00:01:56.000 And you want to lay those bricks in an order. 00:01:56.000 --> 00:01:63.000 You have different lengths. You have 100, 200, 300 & 400 millimeter bricks. 00:02:03.000 --> 00:02:09.000 And you lay them in an order such that you have nice look. 00:02:09.000 --> 00:02:13.000 When I first interviewed Ron I discovered 00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:18.000 he had just graduated with a degree in computer science on the east coast. 00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:26.000 And so him and three of his buddies decided to ride their bicycles to the Pacific Ocean. 00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:32.000 The bike that you see behind me in the memorial says Ron. 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:34.000 That bicycle was a part of Ron. 00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:39.000 He would ride it to work. He had ridden it across the country. 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:43.000 It tells us who Ron is. 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:47.000 This memorial to Ron would not have happened 00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:50.000 without Western Interlock's support. 00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:55.000 I had worked with Ray previously and 00:02:56.000 --> 00:02:60.000 I went to him, I told him Ron's story and Ray said yes. 00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:05.000 We're willing to provide you materials for Ron's memorial. 00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:14.000 This space is dedicated to Ron Swartzendruber (1971-2020). 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:19.000 Ron was an integral part of University Computing Solutions 00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:25.000 and Western Oregon University for 21 years, 00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:31.000 faithfully and expertly maintaining our university web servers. 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:36.000 Ron's vast knowledge put him at the center of projects 00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:40.000 encompassing the whole department. 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:44.000 A generous mentor and team player, 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:49.000 he fostered a collaborative culture within UCS 00:03:49.000 --> 00:03:53.000 and was admired and loved by all. 00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:60.000 Ron rode this bicycle from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast. 00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:06.000 Donated by his wife, Whitney, and transformed into a sculpture 00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:11.000 by Oregon artist, Tamera Greiter, it perpetuates 00:04:11.000 --> 00:04:16.000 Ron's spirit of energy and endurance. 00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:21.000 The stone plaza was generously donated by Western Interlock 00:04:21.000 --> 00:04:28.000 and constructed by members of the UCS team.
