I didn't even know the age. 00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:16.000 Just kinda going through Western Oregon and kinda going through the different majors, 00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:19.000 once I was told that, hey like, you can do a multitude of things. 00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:22.000 Whether that's working in hospitals, schools or the criminal justice system. 00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:26.000 I also knew that mental health was a really big thing. 00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:30.000 Today, I'm a school social worker here at McDaniel High School in Portland, Oregon. 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:33.000 My daily duties is, it's, it's a lot! 00:00:33.000 --> 00:00:36.000 Doing a lot of consultation work with our school counselors. 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:39.000 Doing in classroom presentations with our teachers. 00:00:39.000 --> 00:00:41.000 There's also staff trainings. 00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:46.000 Coordinating with administrators around our climate and what we need to do as a school. 00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:48.000 I do a lot of mental health and counseling here. 00:00:49.000 --> 00:00:52.000 Today, I'll be presenting the signs of suicide for high schools. 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:58.000 Western introduced me to two of my passions, acting and to the world of sociology. 00:00:58.000 --> 00:00:61.000 One of the biggest things that I learned from that was to take chances. 00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:06.000 I did not believe that I could get into some of the things that I'm into today. 00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:10.000 I was introduced to some staff that really challenged me. 00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:12.000 They challenged me to have critical thinking. 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:16.000 They challenged me that hey, as a black man going through this university 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:19.000 and into the world, definitely you got to think about things a little bit different. 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:22.000 You got to maneuver through things a little bit different. 00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:24.000 I absolutely recommend Western Oregon. 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:26.000 I wouldn't be where I'm at without it. 00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:30.000 To me, Western Oregon, what makes it special is the sense of community 00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:33.000 with so many different backgrounds and all that stuff. 00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:35.000 It just makes you feel welcome. 00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:37.000 What I usually tell students that I work with 00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:40.000 or anyone that I come across and they're feeling down. 00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:42.000 This too shall pass. 00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:44.000 Be kind to yourself. 00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:47.000 music
