WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.000 [music] 00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:13.000 Here at Western Oregon University in the music department, we've recognized for a long time 00:00:13.000 --> 00:00:19.000 that American popular music and popular music styles of the last 150 years 00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:25.000 are the primary driving force behind current musical culture around the world. 00:00:25.000 --> 00:00:30.000 What makes this program unique, certainly, is that 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:36.000 this is the only popular music track at the master's level 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:39.000 anywhere at an accredited institution. 00:00:39.000 --> 00:00:46.000 So if you want to get a master's degree and popular music is what interests you 00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:51.000 then right now, Western is the only place to go. 00:00:51.000 --> 00:00:57.000 [music] 00:00:57.000 --> 00:00:61.000 BERGERON: Our goal is to prepare them for careers in the music industry as performers, 00:01:01.000 --> 00:01:08.000 as composers, arrangers, producers for various media, or as educators. 00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:14.000 One of the distinctive features of the Popular Music program at WOU is the flexibility of the curriculum. 00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:20.000 We've developed the program so that students can study the music that they're interested in 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:26.000 within the context of a comprehensive academic degree. 00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:32.000 Students are able to choose from courses that include jazz arranging, orchestration, 00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:36.000 songwriting, audio production, and popular music. 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:41.000 [music] 00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:46.000 BERGERON: I feel one of the greatest advantages of attending a smaller university such as WOU 00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:51.000 is the opportunity students have to work closely with faculty. 00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:56.000 We serve as mentors for students, and we often perform in ensembles with them. 00:01:56.000 --> 00:01:61.000 [music] 00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:07.000 This is Western's brand new recording studio, just opened this year. We're all very excited about it. 00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:12.000 It's about 1,100 square feet. Nice big control room 00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:15.000 that also doubles as a classroom for our audio production courses. 00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:20.000 We get about 15 students in here. Big live room for recording small ensembles 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:25.000 and then a couple of other smaller rooms for singers or drums, stuff like that. 00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:29.000 Audio production students, and they get to record all sorts of different things. 00:02:29.000 --> 00:02:36.000 Master's students, who need to make a record here during their studies, have a studio that they can work in. 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:43.000 There's really no way for an audio student to know what they're doing unless they have hands-on training 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:50.000 and actually record ensembles or artists or overdub and mix or whatever it is, and they can do all of that here. 00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:56.000 [music] 00:02:56.000 --> 00:02:60.000 COKER: Parents should feel good about sending their students here 00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:07.000 for the simple reason that their kids will be able to come here and study what is their passion, 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:11.000 while at the same time getting a 4-year degree. 00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:23.000 [music]
