WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.000 Music 00:00:04.000 --> 00:00:08.000 I decided to major in psychology because I wanted to help other people, 00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:12.000 especially young children who are at risk. I want to help people 00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:16.000 improve their daily lives and motivate children to advocate for themselves. 00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:20.000 Music 00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:21.000 Music 00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:28.000 I'm taking three psychology classes this term and one of them is Social Justice Mental Health. 00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:32.000 I enjoy this class because we get to read articles and come in every week 00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:36.000 and have our questions answered. We are learning about impression and privilege 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:40.000 and how to overcome that and what that means 00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:44.000 for our identities and our lives. Also, I'm working on a research team 00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:48.000 with Dr. Chehalis Strapp, which is a privilege for me to be doing as 00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:52.000 an undergraduate and I'm very grateful for it. Another benefit of being 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:56.000 a psychology student at Western is the opportunity 00:00:56.000 --> 00:00:60.000 to work at the Child Development Center right here on campus. I get to help children 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:04.000 at the preschool age learn to self-identify, self-affirm, work with 00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:08.000 others, and be able to learn their social skills as well as regular 00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:12.000 education. Now that I'm here, I'm really happy with my decision because I'm getting a lot 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:16.000 of hands on experience and I know that's something special as well as 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:20.000 opportunities for research and employment and I truly do believe this is a school where every 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:21.000 student matters. 00:01:21.000 --> 00:01:28.000 Music
