WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.000 One, two, one, two, three, four 00:00:02.000 --> 00:00:09.000 My name is Kit Mills I'm a second year graduate student in the music department majoring in the master's in music program in music. 00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:13.000 With a speciality in contemporary music with my focus in composition. 00:00:13.000 --> 00:00:19.000 There's several reasons I decided to come to Western Oregon University to pursue my Master's degree in music. 00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:23.000 Probably the first and strongest reason was Dr. Kevin Walczyk who is my adviser here. 00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:27.000 And head of the composition department and also the head of the graduate department. 00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:32.000 I was really struck when I talked with him with his empathy. We're both father's we're both 00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:35.000 people who have worked as composers for quite some time. 00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:41.000 I'm kind of a non traditional student. I've been out in the work force working as a professional musician for about 15 years. 00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:45.000 I was also incredibly impressed with the level of work not only he's doing 00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:48.000 but also the other faculty here full time. 00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:54.000 I liked the idea of being in a small program where I wouldn't be lost amidst the hordes of other students. 00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:58.000 One of the real strengths of this program is it's so customizable. 00:00:58.000 --> 00:00:64.000 And there are eight or nine of us graduate students right now and we vary incredibly in terms of our interests and our specialities. 00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:08.000 And the great thing is this program can accommodate all of us. 00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:14.000 Me, I kind of have two different careers. One as a composer and the more classical side of things. 00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:20.000 But I also have been a professional drummer and session player for quite some time so those don't always meet up. 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:26.000 And the great thing is, here at Western I have multiple ways to indulge both of those and to continue my studies. 00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:31.000 Right now I'm taking only one true class it's a musicology class with Dr. Keller Coker. 00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:35.000 And that is covering a variety of musical settings. 00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:41.000 For the circumstances that created some of the different musical genres and musical movements that we're familiar with through history. 00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:44.000 As part of my graduate assistantship my duties include 00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:48.000 being the assistant director of the Western Oregon pep band. 00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:53.000 So we have played at football games, the home basketball games. 00:01:53.000 --> 00:01:57.000 You know just bringing a lot of excitement and energy to those games. 00:01:57.000 --> 00:01:62.000 So great ways to keep going with my percussions. 00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:08.000 Master's should mean something. It should mean that you're having an opportunity to study with someone who is a true master at what they're doing. 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:17.000 Each of the professor's here you'll find has not just one special area but often two or even more areas where they're just great. 00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:22.000 Western's graduate music program may be just what you need to take your career to another level. 00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:29.000 Music.
