Civil Rights Film Series The sociology Department will once again offer a Civil Rights Film Series course this Winter Term. It meets Wednesday evenings from 5:30-7:50 in ITC 211 (Auditorium). We offer this course as a contribution to Black History Month and also as a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King and other heroes of the Civil Rights Movement. Social Science Symposium Dr. Jolanta N. Komornicka, visiting instructor of history at Wheaton College in Norton, MA, will give a talk entitled: "Knowing It When We See It: Lese Majesty, the Parlement of Paris, and Gender" Come the fourteenth century in France, the very definition of treason was undergoing numerous changes. In part, this was due to the fact that even though acts of crimen laesae maiestatis had been known since the time of the Carolingians, it was not until the last Capetians that the term was deployed with any kind of frequency. Over the course of the high and late Middle Ages, the crime of lese majesty took on multiple valences in response to the growing medieval discourse of high treason. In this talk, which is based off my dissertation research, I will focus on one of the most surprising and interesting characteristics of lese majesty in fourteenth-century France: how and when the label was applied to women. The talk will touch on the various roles women could play in the courtroom (victim, criminal, witness, etc.), but will focus on women as malefactors and the court's reaction to their traitorous conduct.

WOU Theatre/Dance Dept presents The Zero Hour "A lucid drama. Appealingly brainy and messy, George's play never settles for an easy metaphor or emotion. It cross-examines our pat notions of history and love."- The New Yorker Rebecca and her chronically unemployed butch girlfriend, O, have created a happy nest in their run-down walk-up in Queens, but things are starting to unravel. The more O pushes Rebecca to stop hiding their relationship, the more Rebecca's work life?writing a textbook for seventh graders about the Holocaust? begins to bleed into her personal life: She starts meeting World War II Nazis on the 7 train, passing as hipster professionals in New York City but hungry to come out about who they really are. Back home in Queens, O is also sparring with convincingly real visions: her long estranged?and recently dead??mother keeps showing up to argue with her about her choices. This almost-love story explores the relationship between honesty and cruelty: How do you tell the truth about yourself when that truth might devastate the people you love? A tour-de-force for two actors playing eight different roles. Approximately 105 Minutes Additional Matinee, Feb. 9th at 2:00 pm Seating is limited to 50 per show.

Snow Bus to Timberline Resort It's for those who enjoy sledding, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, or anyone who wants to see snow. A charter bus with reclining seats and movie watching capabilities escorts us to the mountain for a day of snow . The bus will depart from WOU campus at 7am and depart from the mountain at 4pm.
