Spray Geyser has been a consistently active geyser with a dynamic
and fluctuating microbial population that includes a variably impressive
red layer community. We have surveyed these springs annually since
1998. We did not begin sampling until 1999 given the lack of obvious
mat in 1998 (and concerns about approaching this geyser). At this
writing (9/01), the community appears to be vanishing yet again and
we are curious to see what happens next year. Access is via Fairy
Falls and a public trail reaches the feature after 3-4 miles. This geyser
is probably the most dangerous in our study as it seems to change its
mind often - whether in terms of timing, source, or volume.
