Witch Pond, near the Heart Lake Thermal Basin, required a backpacking survey trip to access. While several still pools along Witch Creek appeared to contain submerged mat red layer communities, this was the only thermal basin in the area to have flourishing red layer communities. Surveys of Heart Basin proper, The Fissure Group, and the Upper Basin were all negative. It should be noted that Witch Creek is, technically off-trail. More importantly, the pools lay in very muddy and dangerous grassy area. Much care should be taken when working in this area.
