Owing to the backpack needed to access Shoshone Lake, we have only surveyed and sampled this remarkable region once (in 2000). Most of Shoshone Basin proper was extremely hot and contained little to no run-off because the thermal gradient immediately dumped into Shoshone Creek. About to give up, we headed back toward the woods, past what we believe is Coral Pool, and found several huge, still, moderate pools we believe are the Western Group. The first contained this interesting brownish red sample.
