Dick Castenholz first discovered and published descriptions of this, the first "red layer" community in Yellowstone (1983). Bev Pierson, former student and long-time collaborator of Dick, took up extensive non-DNA studies about Rabbit Creek Red (RCR) just before I entered the lab and joined them in the field (as a wee 21-year old in 1988). For a magical week, we made several trips to this roadside feature near the Fairy Falls trailhead, collecting red layer samples for daily analysis that examined how these organisms captured and used energy. By 1994, though, the mat/source had dried up. Thus, in 1997, when I resumed the "red layer project," I could not continue studies on this precise site.
