Inkwell Spring is a very public site along the boardwalk of the Upper Basin (about a mile from Old Faithful). As such, it requires ranger escorts to sample. Given these issues, we have only sampled it once (in 1998) and, to date, have not performed DNA analysis on the mat. I have been told that other scientists are studying it because of its unique manganese deposits (that contribute to its black color and name).
