To date, we have set up 3 year-long experiments aimed at studying mat formation in situ, all based on data that suggests Chloroflexi filaments and sequences are present in geothermal sourcewater. For each experiment, we placed 16-20 sterile glass rods in the run-off of Fairy Geyser (see separate database entry) and, over the course of the year, we collect and analyze subsets of rods using microscopy, pigment analysis, and 16S rRNA studies. These studies represent the combined efforts of Danny Lodge, Peter Williams, Terry Manning, Jennifer Esparza, and Kelly Shipley.
