POLICY
Western Oregon University and the Oregon University System support affirmative
action and equal opportunity not only because it is law, but also because
efforts to do so will ultimately afford each person an equal chance to be
employed in work of his/her choice.
Under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, institutions of higher
education are subject to the same constraints as employers and employment
agencies when dealing with employment opportunities for students. Title VII
makes it unlawful practice for an employment agency to use any employment
selection procedure which discriminates on the basis of race, color, religion,
sex, or national origin. (Other federal acts govern discrimination of the basis
of age, handicaps, and citizenship status.)
A practice which precludes employment opportunities being accessible by all
students may be determined to violate Title VII. To ensure compliance with the
law, employment announcements or job information should be forwarded to the
Office of Career Services.
The Office of Career Services will post position information provided by the
employer, including academic and experience requirements. Screening to determine
whether the student satisfies the requirement(s) will be the responsibility for
the student and the employer. Career Services will prescreen candidates for
recruiters.
Having all career opportunities for students available in Career Services,
while informing individual academic departments, individual students to a
central location, Career Services, for comprehensive employment
information.
