POLICY
Definition:
1. Threat of harm to self, Threat of harm to others, Attempted suicide
2. Any person or department receiving a call or threat will contact dispatcher
at Campus Public Safety (838-8481).
A. Dispatcher will contact Public Safety Officers who will make initial
assessment.
B. Concurrently, dispatcher will notify:
1. Director of Health and Counseling Services, or designee
2. Vice President for Student Affairs, or designee
PURPOSE
PROCEDURES
Notification/Response:
I. ON-CAMPUS RESIDENT/DAY
(Serious threat of harm to self or others)
A. Assessment made by Public Safety Officers who will then decide
whether to dispatch off-campus emergency responders.
B. Health and Counseling Center will be notified by dispatcher.
1. Records from all involved departments will be available to the
Director of Health and Counseling Services in order to
facilitate information exchange with need to know.
C. Vice President for Student Affairs notified by dispatcher.
1. Information will be exchanged by all parties in the best
interest of the student.
D. If initial assessment not life-threatening as determined by
emergency responders student will be brought to Health and
Counseling Center for evaluation.
E. If the student refuses to go to the Health and Counseling Center,
responders will inform the Vice President for Student Affairs.
II. ON CAMPUS RESIDENT/NIGHT, WEEK-END
(Serious threat of harm to self or others)
A. Receipt of information - Dispatcher at Campus Public Safety
(838-8481)
1. Dispatcher will contact on-duty Public Safety officer who
will respond and make an initial assessment.
a. Director of Health and Counseling Services notified by
Public Safety dispatcher.
b. Vice President for Student Affairs/Director of University
Residences notified by Public Safety dispatcher.
III. OFF CAMPUS RESIDENT/DAY, NIGHT, WEEKEND
(Serious threat of harm to self or others)
A. Initial notification from outside agencies/sources regardless of
who is initially contacted - Vice President for Student Affairs,
Campus Public Safety, and Health and Counseling Services will be
notified and will coordinate response.
1. Information will be exchanged from Health and Counseling
Services in the best interest of the student.
2. Follow-up will be confidential through Health and Counseling
Services and recommendations for student's continuation on
campus or in class will be coordinated by Director or designee.
IV. Actual Suicide
A. Initial notification from outside agencies/sources regardless of
who is initially contacted - Vice President for Student Affairs,
Campus Public Safety, and Health and Counseling Services will be
notified by the first department that gains knowledge and will
coordinate response.
B. Death of a Student Policy will be followed.
V. Actual Harm to Another
A. Campus Public Safety, upon notification, will take appropriate
action and advise Vice President for Student Affairs and
Director of Health and Counseling Services.
SUICIDE THOUGHTS WITHOUT PLAN
I. Counselor on call will be notified by head RA or Campus Public Safety
Officer and will evaluate situation by phone or in person, (in-house
procedure - report will be made to Health and Counseling Services and
Vice President for Student Affairs [Campus Public Safety 838-8481].)
De-briefing will be held within 48 hours of all events, including Vice
President for Student Affairs, Campus Public Safety, University Residences,
Health and Counseling Center, and any other involved departments.
AUTHORITY
APPROVAL
Campus Public Safety, Student Health & Counseling Center, and University
Residences.
