Dr. Peter Callero, of the Sociology department here at Western Oregon University, will present
"Uncivil Engagement: Social Capital for Radical Democracy." Are Americans becoming increasingly disconnected from each other? Is civil engagement in voluntary associations, community groups and social clubs declining? Is this decline in social capital threatening our democracy? Influential political scientist Robert Putnam believes so. According to Putnam, if democracy is to be saved, civil society must be reinvented. In this presentation, Peter Callero will critique Putnams interpretation of the evidence before offering an alternative theoretical explanation of the relationship between social capital and democracy. |
