"What is the
Student Technology Fee Committee?"

The Student Technology Fee Committee (STFC) is a campus organization whose focus is utilizing fee dollars, provided by Western Oregon University (WOU) students, to provide technology that is accessible to the majority of students while enhancing their academic experience. These technologies include any device or technique that can be used to manage data and the medium which the data resides. The academic experience refers to the methods that information is offered whether by direct instruction or though personal growth practices.

Two committee members are assigned by the governing member (i.e. Dean, Director, department head, etc.) from the four units that are directly affected by the STFC decisions. These are:

  • Associated Student of Western Oregon University (ASWOU President)
  • College of Liberal Arts & Sciences(Dean LAS)
  • College of Education (Dean Education)
  • University Computing Services (Director UCS)

Each of these members is required to keep in contact with their departments and regularly attend STFC meetings throughout the course of their appointment. It is the responsibility of the department head and their respective student representatives to communicate their desires and ideas to one another on a regular basis to maintain the goals of the department.

Due to the nature of purchase, acquisition, implementation and support, the Director of University Computing Services operates as ex officio and advisor for the decisions that STFC members make. As ex officio this position gives the STFC a technical understanding of the needs and procedures of UCS and its infrastructure. As an advisor this position offers needed assistance with issues regarding budgets and campus organizational structures.

STFC meetings must be held and announced to both the committee membership and the campus population via email with an included agenda. Public notification must be provided no less than 72 hours prior to the meeting. Requests for additional agenda items should be submitted, in writing, to the STFC at least 72 hours prior to the next meeting window to provide time for its addition to the agenda and an acknowledgement of the addition.

Attendance is recorded in meeting minutes that are posted on the STFC website (http://www.wou.edu/stfc) and on the WOU Forums (http://www.wou.edu/forums), and any member that is absent 2 consecutive or three total meetings may be requested to relinquish their position pending a vote by the remaining STFC membership. If a member is removed from their position it is the responsibility of the committee to notify the necessary department head and request a replacement as soon as possible.

The STFC is required to vote on any issues that require the use of Technology Fee assets. Voting is limited to the eight appointed members of the current STFC and can be performed either during a regular meeting or via online forum poll. Voting proceedings are not required to be public but results are. Likewise discussions by committee members can be held during regular meetings or in public or private forum.
