FULL STATEMENT OF AUTHORITY

Upon retirement, this rank may be granted to a member of the faculty who has an overall record of distinguished teaching, librarianship or scholarship and an overall record of distinguished service to Western Oregon University.

Upon nomination, each division personnel review committee will review retired faculty members’ overall record of teaching, librarianship or scholarship, and service to establish candidacy for emeritus. Consideration for emeritus must occur within three years of retirement and may be brought for consideration once. Nominations for the personnel review committee to consider an individual for emeritus status may come from the personnel review committee or other faculty members at WOU, including emeritus faculty. Nominees may decline to be considered for the emeritus award. A Professor Emeritus is so designated and appointed by the WOU president upon the recommendation of the appropriate divisional personnel review committee, the appropriate dean and the provost.

If a decision is made to decline emeritus status a retired faculty member can appeal once to the University Personnel Review Committee which could recommend reconsidering the decision.

Professors Emeriti are accorded the privileges of regular, ranked faculty and will have their names recorded at this rank in university publications during the remainder of their lifetimes. No compensation accrues by virtue of this rank unless the individual is offered a temporary contract to teach or fulfill other duties. A free yearly parking permit, complimentary season athletic passes, library privileges, and access to purchase a membership in the Health and Wellness Center are available to emeritus faculty. When possible, office space is afforded emeritus faculty.

In situations in which emeritus faculty identify themselves as a member of the Western Oregon University community, they shall act within their area of professional expertise and experience. Emeritus faculty should consider the potential impact of their actions on the reputation and welfare of Western Oregon University. As with awarding tenure, the award of Emeritus shall be terminated only by resignation or for cause.
