WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.000 This Spring I decided that it would be good for my students 00:00:04.000 --> 00:00:08.000 to have a challenge that would be meaningful, relevant to 00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:12.000 the things that are going on in our society, and 00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:16.000 specifically the environment, so I gave them an assignment to 00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:20.000 create some of what we call street puppets 00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:24.000 that can go out and parade and march 00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:28.000 in demonstrations if that's where you want to use them, but somehow create 00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:32.000 a visually meaningful image that communicates concerns 00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:36.000 for the environment. That was their assignment, and 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:40.000 they decided what they wanted to do - what they wanted to come up with - 00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:44.000 and today we saw the outcome of that. 00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:48.000 Today was a practice for a real march that will take place 00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:52.000 in Portland in two days, so they'll adjust their 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:56.000 sculptures and they'll make them stronger, 00:00:56.000 --> 00:00:59.000 wherever they need to be engineered. They see the problems today, 00:00:59.000 --> 00:00:61.000 and they'll make those alterations. 00:01:01.000 --> 00:01:07.000 Art is an expression of self, and this particular project, since it's a group 00:01:07.000 --> 00:01:12.000 project, is an expression of how we as society can be responsive with art. 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:16.000 This is our environmental activism sculpture for our 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:20.000 sculpting studies class. It's a foam head 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:24.000 of paper mach' and chicken wire. What we've done is a 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:28.000 gagged environmental scientist. Our agencies, APA, and the National 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:32.000 Park service can't talk about planet science anymore on their social media sites. 00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:36.000 So this is our protest piece for that. Even though the 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:40.000 slogan is 'make America great again,' silencing science does not make 00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:44.000 America great. For this project, we have a team of three working on it. 00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:47.000 All of our spare time between classes, we've been here working on this, 00:01:47.000 --> 00:01:49.000 getting it to be effective. 00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:53.000 I'm currently standing next to a part of a three-piece puppet for 00:01:53.000 --> 00:01:58.000 the Climate March coming up in Portland. It's a hazmat suit; he's wearing 00:01:58.000 --> 00:01:62.000 a gas mask, and this is the spray can that is going to be spraying our 00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:07.000 fabricated Earth. Most of my group were really thrilled to bring awareness 00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:12.000 to something that's commonly overlooked. Ours is not necessarily pointed 00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:16.000 towards the bee issue with the pesticides killing our honey bees, 00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:20.000 but it was in that general area. You may have also 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:24.000 noticed the fish I'm standing next to. This was actually fabricated 00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:28.000 by three of our professors here at WOU, and this shows how much we are 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:32.000 really working through the community. We actually took this to the science march 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:36.000 for Earth Day up in Portland last weekend. Just another example 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:40.000 of us bringing some life into a normal community event. 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:44.000 Art is an expression of self. It's an expression of how 00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:47.000 we as a society can be responsive with art. 00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:51.000 What I really like about the art program here at WOU is that I'm already 00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:56.000 getting to express my artistic craft in this march and the march last weekend. 00:02:56.000 --> 00:02:60.000 I'm proud of these guys and what they accomplished today, and I'm proud 00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:04.000 of the response that they got from people just in 00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:08.000 the street and the university sidewalks. 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:12.000 People that saw the work responded. That's what art should always 00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:14.000 do, to make people think. 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:20.000 music 00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:21.000 music
