Many of them for the first time in their families. 00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:44.000 We still have 50 percent of our students who are still first gen. 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:48.000 Which means oftentimes they're going to need a little bit of help 00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:53.000 to get through those difficult moments. And the Health and Counseling Center can do that as well. 00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:55.000 It's really about student success. 00:03:55.000 --> 00:03:58.000 As you know are new strategic plan puts students first. 00:03:58.000 --> 00:03:62.000 We think in terms of together we succeed, together we achieve. 00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:06.000 And this building is an example of that going forward. 00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:10.000 I also know we have a couple members of our foundation alumni board who are here today. 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:13.000 If they'll wave and be recognized that would be great as well 00:04:13.000 --> 00:04:17.000 because they're a big supporter of the project. 00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:20.000 applause 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:25.000 And I'm really lucky to be in this position to be able to enjoy this opportunity with you. 00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:29.000 And I look forward to the formal ribbon cutting, and getting inside and touring the space. 00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:33.000 I had a chance to see it in the last few weeks before it was open 00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:35.000 but I honestly haven't been in it since it's has been up and running. 00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:40.000 So I'm looking forward to seeing all the different features when we get inside in a few minutes. 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:43.000 But again a big thank you to Dr. Dukes and his staff. 00:04:43.000 --> 00:04:49.000 Our physical plant facilities do a great job as you see in terms of the care of the building 00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:52.000 and how it fits in with the overall architecture and design. 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:55.000 It's really a very beautiful space. 00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:56.000 And so we continue to have a community 00:04:56.000 --> 00:04:62.000 that is wound together both architecturally and also in terms of the services we provide. 00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:06.000 So with that I want to welcome you and look forward to the remainder of the ceremony. 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:08.000 Jaime thank you. 00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:13.000 applause 00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:19.000 Thank you President Fuller. 00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:23.000 We are fortunate to have one of our board members Cecelia Koontz with us today 00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:28.000 to speak on behalf of the board of trustees and their guidance to Western Oregon University. 00:05:28.000 --> 00:05:30.000 Would you come up please? Thank you. 00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:33.000 applause 00:05:33.000 --> 00:05:36.000 Thank you it's an honor to be here today 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:41.000 on behalf of our chair Jim Baumgartner and the rest of the board of trustees. 00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:45.000 As were introduced to you today and those who couldn't be here today. 00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:50.000 We've only been in existence as a board for about three years. 00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:56.000 And these are the kinds of things that fill us with pride 00:05:56.000 --> 00:05:62.000 as we determine whether or not we can go forward and grow this university in our current environment. 00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:07.000 And things that can make a real difference in our students' lives. 00:06:07.000 --> 00:06:09.000 It's kind of funny I'm standing here 00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:13.000 and thinking about 1975 00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:17.000 which was the first time I stepped foot on this campus. 00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:23.000 And nothing I can see was here then. Nothing behind me was here then. 00:06:23.000 --> 00:06:27.000 So the thought that these buildings as the president mentioned 00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:31.000 have really changed the face of this campus 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:36.000 more in the last 12 years than in the 30 years before that. 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:40.000 It shows a real investment and commitment 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:43.000 from the supporters of this university, 00:06:43.000 --> 00:06:48.000 from the state of Oregon, and from our faculty and students. 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:52.000 And I think of all these buildings the two that impress me the most 00:06:52.000 --> 00:06:55.000 are actually the Peter Courtney Health and Wellness Center 00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:58.000 and now this Student Health and Counseling Center. 00:06:58.000 --> 00:06:60.000 Not only are they beautiful buildings 00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:06.000 but what they represent as far as reaching out and helping support the whole student. 00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:09.000 And the entire campus community. 00:07:09.000 --> 00:07:16.000 It's not about the education you receive. It's about lifelong learning, it's about lifelong health, wellness, and wellbeing. 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:18.000 And that's pretty amazing. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:26.000 The most important thing is that both of those buildings were as the president mentioned funded by students. 00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:31.000 The foundation that was laid by students 00:07:31.000 --> 00:07:33.000 who lobbied for these buildings 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:38.000 who worked to make sure they were built and had a lot of input into how they operate, 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:41.000 to me says more about this campus and this community 00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:46.000 than any name on a building or than any pretty facade. 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:50.000 So I am extremely proud to be here, be a part of this, 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:53.000 and to thank past students and the future students 00:07:53.000 --> 00:07:59.000 who are going to make sure that everybody gets to enjoy these facilities. So thank you. 00:07:59.000 --> 00:07:65.000 applause 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:16.000 So I would like to share some information and some history with you about health services here at Western Oregon University. 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:18.000 By referring to some information that we found 00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:22.000 as we moved from our previous building on Winter Street 00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:26.000 to this new location here this last summer. 00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:29.000 We found these two poster boards 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:32.000 in one of the supply closets that have some interesting facts. 00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:36.000 As you know, Western Oregon University was founded in 1856 00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:41.000 and during that time student health needs were met by community medical services. 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:43.000 In the early 1900s 00:08:43.000 --> 00:08:47.000 some health services were available on campus and according to these posters 00:08:47.000 --> 00:08:51.000 a girls dormitory was built in 1910 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:55.000 that included a suite of rooms designated as the infirmary. 00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:59.000 Through the years medical services were housed and provided 00:08:59.000 --> 00:08:61.000 in various places on campus. 00:09:01.000 --> 00:09:03.000 Then in 1963 00:09:03.000 --> 00:09:08.000 when Western Oregon University was known as the Oregon College of Education 00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:14.000 a new building was built especially for and equipped specifically for health services for students. 00:09:14.000 --> 00:09:18.000 These poster boards give information about the newly constructed building 00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:21.000 and the student-focused medical services. 00:09:21.000 --> 00:09:27.000 These medical services were provided by part time nurses and part time physicians 00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:34.000 until 1972 when Dr. Richard Hall was hired as the first full time physician and medical director of health services. 00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:41.000 These posters go on to show that there was also a part-time psychiatrist available upon request. 00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:44.000 And the doctor of the time, Dr. Hall, 00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:51.000 was quoted as saying: we're very rich in space, these facilities are very adequate and there's room for expansion. 00:09:51.000 --> 00:09:54.000 So now fast forward to today. 00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:60.000 So for many years this building built in 1963 served the needs of our students well. 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:03.000 But since 1963 our enrollment is much larger 00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:11.000 and the need for medical as well as mental health services has increased along with the increased student enrollment. 00:10:11.000 --> 00:10:16.000 Here is some information about student needs and our services to them. 00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:21.000 Western Oregon University is a member of the American College Health Association. 00:10:21.000 --> 00:10:25.000 That has member universities and colleges all across the nation. 00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:32.000 Each year the American College Health Association conducts a national college health assessment. 00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:36.000 To gather information about student behaviors and health trends. 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:40.000 Western Oregon University participated in this health assessment 00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:43.000 this last academic year that concluded in June of this year. 00:10:43.000 --> 00:10:49.000 Our wellness education program sent out this assessment to Western Oregon University students. 00:10:49.000 --> 00:10:54.000 And we had 419 students who responded to this assessment. 00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:60.000 The following is a summary of the results of this campus health assessment. 00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:03.000 The top six medical concerns that required medical attention 00:11:03.000 --> 00:11:08.000 over the 12 months from July 2016 through June 2017 00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:12.000 were allergies, back pain, urinary tract infections, 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:16.000 asthma, sinus infections, and strep throat, in that order. 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:18.000 Our medical team 00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:24.000 that consists of a part time physician, three nurse practitioners, and three medical assistants, 00:11:24.000 --> 00:11:31.000 provided 4290 appointments to our students over that period of time. 00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:35.000 Our medical services director Jennifer King 00:11:35.000 --> 00:11:38.000 says that with the new Student Health and Counseling Center building 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:40.000 we now have more space 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:44.000 as well as more exam rooms to utilize for patient care. 00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:50.000 The exam rooms are designed in a way to provide and maintain as much privacy as possible. 00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:52.000 The large windows 00:11:54.000 --> 00:11:61.000 flood the lobby with light and the tones and colors of the walls and floors are soothing and peaceful. These are her words. 00:12:01.000 --> 00:12:09.000 We also have a lab on site and a small pharmacy for dispensing commonly prescribed medications at affordable costs. 00:12:09.000 --> 00:12:16.000 She goes on to say that our new facility allows us to offer many same-day diagnostic tests, prescription medications, 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:21.000 physical exams, laboratory testing, women's health care and much more. 00:12:21.000 --> 00:12:27.000 Our new building is aesthetically pleasing but more importantly, it allows for future growth. 00:12:27.000 --> 00:12:31.000 Over the years our mental health services have also increased dramatically. 00:12:31.000 --> 00:12:36.000 I was looking at some statistics from the year 2007-2008. 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:43.000 The counseling department provided 1997 mental health counseling appointments 00:12:43.000 --> 00:12:45.000 to Western Oregon University that year. 00:12:45.000 --> 00:12:48.000 This last academic year 2016-17 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:55.000 our counseling department provided 4709 mental health counseling appointments which is more that double 00:12:55.000 --> 00:12:59.000 from the 2007-2008 academic year. 00:12:59.000 --> 00:12:63.000 The top three mental health concerns reported by our students 00:13:03.000 --> 00:13:06.000 on the national college health assessment 00:13:06.000 --> 00:13:11.000 were anxiety/stress, depression, and relationship issues. 00:13:11.000 --> 00:13:16.000 And that can include family issues, roommate issues, romantic relationship issues, etc. 00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:21.000 And these top three closely resemble the national trends. 00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:27.000 We were able to provide more mental health counseling appointments to our students by increasing our counseling staff. 00:13:27.000 --> 00:13:31.000 Which means we have to have more office space available. 00:13:31.000 --> 00:13:34.000 Currently we have seven professional counselors, 00:13:34.000 --> 00:13:41.000 and three master's level counseling interns from various universities. 00:13:41.000 --> 00:13:48.000 This year are also partnering with Western Oregon University's master's in rehabilitation and mental health counseling program 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:53.000 by providing practicum sites for four master's level students. 00:13:53.000 --> 00:13:56.000 Our counseling director Scott Perfect 00:13:56.000 --> 00:13:61.000 states that our new building with its increased space, technology, and security, 00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:06.000 will provide us with more meeting space and offices to offer individual counseling, 00:14:06.000 --> 00:14:08.000 couple's counseling, crisis services, 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:12.000 staff meetings, mental health support groups, and trainings. 00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:20.000 We are also looking at the possibility of creating a stress inoculation lab for students who struggle with stress and anxiety. 00:14:21.000 --> 00:14:24.000 We also have a very active wellness education department 00:14:24.000 --> 00:14:28.000 that consists of our assistant director Craig Wimmer, 00:14:28.000 --> 00:14:31.000 a wellness educator, a student worker, and interns, 00:14:31.000 --> 00:14:34.000 and 22 peer mentors. 00:14:34.000 --> 00:14:39.000 These peer mentors have undergone tons of training already. 00:14:39.000 --> 00:14:43.000 They started training in the summer to prepare for the fall. 00:14:43.000 --> 00:14:47.000 And they've gone through many of hours of training. About 80? 00:14:47.000 --> 00:14:52.000 Craig? About 80 hours of training already. 00:14:52.000 --> 00:14:56.000 In preparation to assist and support students. 00:14:56.000 --> 00:14:61.000 The wellness education department provides programming, trainings, wellness education, 00:15:01.000 --> 00:15:05.000 wellness events and support to Western Oregon University students 00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:13.000 on topics including safety, nutrition, test anxiety, transitioning to college, alcohol and drugs, 00:15:13.000 --> 00:15:19.000 roommate issues, relationship issues, stress and relaxation and many more. 00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:27.000 They provided 66 programs with approximately 1805 students participating this last academic year. 00:15:27.000 --> 00:15:31.000 The peer mentors also partner up with university housing resident assistants 00:15:31.000 --> 00:15:36.000 to provide programming and events in the residence halls. 00:15:36.000 --> 00:15:40.000 As you can imagine all of these programs and training require space 00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:42.000 for meetings, planning, and preparation. 00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:46.000 Craig states that our new building and facilities create a centralized area 00:15:46.000 --> 00:15:52.000 with adequate office and work space that is more inclusive with other services provided in our clinic. 00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:60.000 It also provides offices and space for more privacy for students seeking health information and resources. 00:16:03.000 --> 00:16:05.000 During spring term of this last year 00:16:05.000 --> 00:16:08.000 our wellness education department conducted satisfaction surveys 00:16:08.000 --> 00:16:13.000 that showed 67 percent of respondents considered medical services 00:16:13.000 --> 00:16:18.000 as very important to their success and retention at Western Oregon University. 00:16:18.000 --> 00:16:25.000 The same satisfaction surveys also showed that 69 percent of respondents considered mental health counseling services 00:16:25.000 --> 00:16:28.000 as very important for their success and retention. 00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:33.000 We have a wonderful staff that is hardworking and student focused. 00:16:33.000 --> 00:16:40.000 We are here to serve our students and we are here because of our students because they financially support our clinic. 00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:45.000 So at this time I would like to invite ASWOU Student Body President Jessica Freeman 00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:48.000 to share some thoughts and student perspective with us. 00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:53.000 applause 00:16:53.000 --> 00:16:60.000 Hello everyone. My name is Jessica Freeman. As Jaime said I'm the ASWOU president this year. 00:17:00.000 --> 00:17:06.000 And it's been so special to be a part of the group of students who actually helped fund this building. 00:17:06.000 --> 00:17:12.000 And just to go right off of that I want to give a huge thank you to administration 00:17:12.000 --> 00:17:16.000 for being willing to go put in hours at the state level to secure additional funds 00:17:16.000 --> 00:17:25.000 so that the burden of paying for such an amazing service and building was not entirely on the students. 00:17:25.000 --> 00:17:30.000 We have a lot of fees that we need to focus on paying 00:17:30.000 --> 00:17:35.000 so the fact that our administration is focusing on a whole student 00:17:35.000 --> 00:17:38.000 and every aspect of individuals being students 00:17:38.000 --> 00:17:40.000 it's just so important to me. 00:17:40.000 --> 00:17:46.000 And ASWOU we have a very common saying that in order to be a student leader you have to be a student before you're a leader. 00:17:46.000 --> 00:17:50.000 And in order to be a student you need to be a healthy happy person first. 00:17:50.000 --> 00:17:56.000 This is a fantastic resource that Western Oregon University offers us. 00:17:56.000 --> 00:17:60.000 And it's so important for every student to realize that we have resources. 00:18:00.000 --> 00:18:03.000 Everybody here at Western wants students to succeed. 00:18:03.000 --> 00:18:06.000 When I came to Western Oregon University three years ago 00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:10.000 I didn't know what the concept of self-care was. 00:18:10.000 --> 00:18:17.000 I didn't think it was a thing, I had no idea that self-care was important to so many people. 00:18:17.000 --> 00:18:22.000 Why would anybody care about it at a college level? I mean we're here to do our own thing right? 00:18:22.000 --> 00:18:28.000 I was very sorely mistaken. And I learned pretty quickly that self-care is very, very important. 00:18:28.000 --> 00:18:31.000 Not just to students but to staff, faculty, and administration. 00:18:31.000 --> 00:18:34.000 So many people care about the well-being of students. 00:18:34.000 --> 00:18:37.000 And that is just so personable to me. 00:18:37.000 --> 00:18:44.000 And now I think what could my life have looked like if I had focused on self-care a little bit sooner. 00:18:44.000 --> 00:18:52.000 So again I just want to thank everybody who helped participate in making the Student Health and Counseling Center happen. 00:18:52.000 --> 00:18:57.000 And I really appreciate the fact that we're doing this dedication. We're getting the word out there that self-care is so important. 00:18:57.000 --> 00:18:64.000 A huge thank you to peer mentors who are incorporating that into our first-year students in the residence halls. 00:19:04.000 --> 00:19:05.000 So thank you Jaime. 00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:12.000 applause 00:19:16.000 --> 00:19:20.000 There are so many people to thank for this wonderful new building. 00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:24.000 We have plant facilities, Paul, and Mike, 00:19:24.000 --> 00:19:30.000 and all of the other workers from plant facilities have been working tirelessly 00:19:30.000 --> 00:19:34.000 to get our building really looking and functioning well. So I want to thank you. 00:19:34.000 --> 00:19:38.000 applause 00:19:38.000 --> 00:19:41.000 Also media services and IT, Nathan, 00:19:41.000 --> 00:19:44.000 I want to thank all of you. 00:19:44.000 --> 00:19:48.000 And plant facilities also for setting up the chairs. 00:19:48.000 --> 00:19:53.000 I mean there's so many people involved in an event like this. 00:19:53.000 --> 00:19:56.000 It's just overwhelming so I want to thank everybody. 00:19:56.000 --> 00:19:61.000 And also I would like to thank Vikkye Fetters 00:20:01.000 --> 00:20:07.000 for coming out today. She is the executive director of the Monmouth-Independence Chamber of Commerce. 00:20:07.000 --> 00:20:11.000 She's here and she brought us a ribbon and some giant scissors 00:20:11.000 --> 00:20:14.000 that we can use to cut this ribbon for the formal dedication. 00:20:14.000 --> 00:20:20.000 And I got her permission to also say that she is a proud Western Oregon University alumna. 00:20:20.000 --> 00:20:25.000 applause 00:20:25.000 --> 00:20:32.000 And so I'm going to ask a couple of our department heads Scott Perfect and Craig Wimmer to come up and hold the ribbon. 00:21:11.000 --> 00:21:21.000 applause 00:21:21.000 --> 00:21:27.000 Next we have a self guided tour our staff has prepared for you. 00:21:27.000 --> 00:21:32.000 There are directional arrows and there are also informational posters along the way. 00:21:32.000 --> 00:21:36.000 So we can come in through the front. Follow the arrows. 00:21:36.000 --> 00:21:41.000 And then go upstairs and in our conference room we have cake and refreshments. 00:21:41.000 --> 00:21:45.000 And also a memento of the dedication. 00:21:45.000 --> 00:21:47.000 So thank you all for coming. 00:21:47.000 --> 00:21:49.000 And let's check it out. 00:21:49.000 --> 00:21:54.000 applause 00:21:54.000 --> 00:21:###.000 music
