You don't see 00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:56.000 sometimes a career coming. It always was going to be a hobby for me. 00:13:56.000 --> 00:13:61.000 But I did kind of follow my dreams and I decided that, you know, I'm just going 00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:05.000 I'm going to hopefully be able to play music for a living even though it's such a 00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:11.000 ethnic and esoteric instrument. And I ended up becoming a very 00:14:11.000 --> 00:14:16.000 hardworking recording studio musician. In this next 00:14:16.000 --> 00:14:22.000 piece that we're going to do is the one that, although I did a few very big 00:14:22.000 --> 00:14:27.000 projects before this one. And these are the Irish traditional bagpipes, so 00:17:59.000 --> 00:17:64.000 I started as I said on bagpipes, meaning Scottish Highland bagpipes 00:18:04.000 --> 00:18:08.000 at age seven. And I moved to Scotland when I was twenty one years old. 00:18:08.000 --> 00:18:12.000 I decided I had to go to Mecca, if you will. And 00:18:12.000 --> 00:18:16.000 really learned from the old masters and in playing in the 00:18:16.000 --> 00:18:22.000 famous bagpipe competitions that had been going for hundreds of years in Scotland, so. 00:18:22.000 --> 00:18:26.000 While I was living in Scotland, though, I heard this instrument on record. 00:18:26.000 --> 00:18:30.000 It was an old vinyl album that a friend in Glasgow had. 00:18:30.000 --> 00:18:34.000 And I said What is that? And he said Oh, those are the Uilleann pipes. 00:18:34.000 --> 00:18:37.000 I'd heard of them but I didn't know what they were. Even though I was a 00:18:37.000 --> 00:18:42.000 piper in Scotland, the two countries, well back in the 80s at least, 00:18:42.000 --> 00:18:47.000 before the internet there wasn't so much interplay between Scottish 00:18:47.000 --> 00:18:51.000 piping and Irish piping. So these are the Irish traditional bagpipe. 00:18:51.000 --> 00:18:53.000 And I'll tell you a bit more about those later. 00:18:53.000 --> 00:18:57.000 But this is pretty much what changed my life as far as my 00:18:57.000 --> 00:18:60.000 career went because as soon as composers 00:19:00.000 --> 00:19:04.000 and film directors started to become aware of this 00:19:04.000 --> 00:19:09.000 especially after I did Braveheart, everybody wanted it. So many years later 00:25:23.000 --> 00:25:30.000 I called him up and we, I pitched him this idea. I actually had a gig before I had a band. 00:25:30.000 --> 00:25:34.000 And I was going to play a big music festival, an Irish festival in 00:25:34.000 --> 00:25:38.000 Missoula, Montana, their Irish festival. And 00:25:38.000 --> 00:25:43.000 So they called me, and I'd played there before, and they said Hey, do you have anything new? 00:25:43.000 --> 00:25:48.000 Can you do a show just yourself, or you know whatever you want to do? And I said 00:25:48.000 --> 00:25:51.000 Absolutely I have a band, no problem. 00:25:51.000 --> 00:25:55.000 Now at the time, Dirk was living in Minneapolis and I called him. 00:25:55.000 --> 00:25:59.000 And I said Hey, man. It's been a few years. What's going on, how are you? 00:25:59.000 --> 00:25:64.000 And hey I got this gig. It's really close to you. It's in Montana. 00:26:04.000 --> 00:26:06.000 laughter 00:26:06.000 --> 00:26:13.000 He said Dude, I'm not there anymore. I'm in Oregon. So 00:26:13.000 --> 00:26:18.000 here his is. So we figured it all out and we started working out this material but. 00:26:18.000 --> 00:26:21.000 It's been a real fun time for the two of us. 00:26:21.000 --> 00:26:25.000 Very challenging, and we wanted to, like I said, design the show that 00:26:25.000 --> 00:26:29.000 was music that we both loved that we brought to the table. 00:26:29.000 --> 00:26:33.000 Mainly Celtic music and then of course I'm bringing in some 00:26:33.000 --> 00:26:38.000 of my film work and recording work. But one thing that we did want to do was 00:26:38.000 --> 00:26:41.000 In doing the film scores and in 00:26:41.000 --> 00:26:44.000 the various projects that I was involved in that involved 00:26:44.000 --> 00:26:47.000 huge productions of, you know, full orchestras and 00:26:47.000 --> 00:26:51.000 things like that. We obviously A, didn't want to do that because 00:26:51.000 --> 00:26:53.000 that would have been the predictable way to go. 00:26:53.000 --> 00:26:58.000 And B, more importantly, would have been the more expensive way to go. 00:26:58.000 --> 00:26:61.000 So we decided, we were thinking, well how can we 00:27:01.000 --> 00:27:06.000 do this, how can we create all these sounds to kind of cover the sound of like 00:27:06.000 --> 00:27:12.000 you know these films, Braveheart, Titanic and all of that, with just two or maybe one or two other people? 00:27:12.000 --> 00:27:15.000 And so what we're doing here is we've got these. Now we're 00:27:15.000 --> 00:27:20.000 We're playing acoustic, traditionally acoustic instruments. Acoustic guitar 00:27:20.000 --> 00:27:24.000 We've got the acoustic fiddle, which is also known as a violin. 00:27:24.000 --> 00:27:28.000 For those of you that aren't sure what a fiddle is. And then the Irish pipes. 00:27:28.000 --> 00:27:32.000 Now the Irish pipes are totally acoustic but to 00:27:32.000 --> 00:27:37.000 get our sound to sound bigger and more lush and cinematic if you will 00:27:37.000 --> 00:27:42.000 we've got several pieces of equipment that we use just to put our acoustic instruments through. 00:27:42.000 --> 00:27:48.000 So a little bit of it's some reverb and some atmosphere it echo and effects to make it sound big. 00:27:48.000 --> 00:27:52.000 But then the other thing that we're doing is we have these little pedals down here that 00:27:52.000 --> 00:27:56.000 are like little small recording devices and we step on a button and 00:27:56.000 --> 00:27:59.000 we can record a part and then we step on it again and it plays it back. 00:27:59.000 --> 00:27:63.000 And then we can step on it a third, or forth, or fifth or sixth time 00:28:03.000 --> 00:28:07.000 and keep recording parts. So Dirk is basically recording 00:28:07.000 --> 00:28:12.000 several parts on the guitar and sometimes I'm doing that as well with the pipes 00:28:12.000 --> 00:28:16.000 Or the whistles, and by the way these are penny whistles. 00:28:16.000 --> 00:28:20.000 The little guy. The kids asked me this at lunchtime today. 00:28:20.000 --> 00:28:25.000 So I'm going to remind myself to tell you. 00:28:25.000 --> 00:28:29.000 This is called the low whistle. It's an octave lower than the penny whistle. 00:28:29.000 --> 00:28:32.000 But that brings us to this next piece of music. 00:28:32.000 --> 00:28:37.000 So we're going to use our little recording devices and I thought that this piece would be fantastic 00:28:37.000 --> 00:28:40.000 for this kind of project where we are 00:28:40.000 --> 00:28:44.000 recording, or we call it looping, parts live 00:28:44.000 --> 00:28:48.000 right before your eyes and then creating this bigger than 00:28:48.000 --> 00:28:53.000 bigger than two or three people sound. The piece that we're going to do next. 00:28:53.000 --> 00:28:56.000 I'm sure almost all of you have heard. 00:28:56.000 --> 00:28:61.000 It was a very famous piece of music before it got used in a very very famous film. 00:29:01.000 --> 00:29:06.000 The album originally was released I think in 1972 00:29:06.000 --> 00:29:10.000 by a seventeen year old English 00:29:10.000 --> 00:29:13.000 musician by the name of Mike Oldfield and he 00:29:13.000 --> 00:29:16.000 He had gotten the help 00:29:16.000 --> 00:29:22.000 of a very young entrepreneur by the name of Richard Branson, who 00:29:22.000 --> 00:29:25.000 gave some studio time to this young 00:29:25.000 --> 00:29:30.000 seventeen year old to record his concept album on a very 00:29:30.000 --> 00:29:34.000 Well, let's just say it's a brand new record label called Virgin Records. 00:29:34.000 --> 00:29:38.000 And the album went on to sell 00:29:38.000 --> 00:29:43.000 millions and millions of copies and basically created the Virgin empire. 00:29:43.000 --> 00:29:47.000 Virgin Atlantic Airways, Virgin Records 00:29:47.000 --> 00:29:52.000 Virgin, what is the one in America? Virgin America. 00:29:52.000 --> 00:29:54.000 All these, everything Virgin 00:29:54.000 --> 00:29:57.000 really kind of came out of this first album. 00:29:57.000 --> 00:29:62.000 And this was called Tubular Bells. And what's the connection? I thought Oh! This is great. I'm going to find some historical 01:14:30.000 --> 01:14:34.000 thing of where he lived but maybe in 1910 or something, you know. 01:14:34.000 --> 01:14:35.000 It doesn't exist. 01:14:35.000 --> 01:14:39.000 Alright, anyway so I promised I'd tell you about the pipes. 01:14:39.000 --> 01:14:43.000 So this is a very interesting instrument. 01:14:43.000 --> 01:14:47.000 Now, bagpipes go way back in history. 01:14:47.000 --> 01:14:53.000 They go back well before the time of Christ. Basically a bagpipe was something 01:14:53.000 --> 01:14:56.000 that had some time of a finger instrument to play melody on. 01:14:56.000 --> 01:14:60.000 With usually it would be a reed, some type of reed. 01:15:00.000 --> 01:15:05.000 Most likely a double inside the chanter, which is the melody pipe. 01:15:05.000 --> 01:15:08.000 And then some sort of animal skin 01:15:08.000 --> 01:15:11.000 hide that then the musician would blow into 01:15:11.000 --> 01:15:16.000 and fill it up. Now some primitive bagpipes had a drone. 01:15:16.000 --> 01:15:20.000 And some didn't but they all had some form of melody and so 01:15:20.000 --> 01:15:23.000 Bagpipes go way back. They also are all throughout 01:15:23.000 --> 01:15:29.000 Eastern and Western Europe believe it or not. Now of course the Scottish are most famous because 01:15:29.000 --> 01:15:34.000 their bagpipe is louder than any other bagpipe and that makes you famous. 01:15:34.000 --> 01:15:36.000 And formidable. 01:15:36.000 --> 01:15:40.000 But the interesting thing about these Scotts were that they are the only 01:15:40.000 --> 01:15:44.000 culture, celtic culture that used the bagpipe 01:15:44.000 --> 01:15:47.000 as an instrument of war. So they did lead their 01:15:47.000 --> 01:15:53.000 clans into battle not only against the English, but unfortunately against other clans. 01:15:53.000 --> 01:15:57.000 Which was not a good thing but also 01:15:57.000 --> 01:15:60.000 part of their history. But 01:16:00.000 --> 01:16:07.000 But the Irish now, this is a much younger instrument, so this goes back relatively recently. 01:16:07.000 --> 01:16:11.000 Uilleann pipes go back to the late 1600s, early 1700s. 01:16:11.000 --> 01:16:16.000 And it's a very sophisticated instrument. Now most bagpipes apart from 01:16:16.000 --> 01:16:20.000 the Scottish pipes, were used as a pastoral instrument as well. 01:16:20.000 --> 01:16:25.000 Most bagpipes were an instrument played by shepherds for their flocks. 01:16:25.000 --> 01:16:29.000 Of course, the like I said, the Scotts took it one step, one big step further. 01:16:29.000 --> 01:16:32.000 But the Irish 01:16:32.000 --> 01:16:37.000 came up with this bagpipe. Now this bagpipe obviously is played sitting down and it is lays across my lap. 01:16:37.000 --> 01:16:40.000 So on the right side here and this is the 01:16:40.000 --> 01:16:46.000 often asked question. How do you get the air into the instrument? Well, I've got a bellows on the right side here. 01:16:46.000 --> 01:16:50.000 So I pump the bellows and that sucks the air in to the 01:16:50.000 --> 01:16:52.000 to the bag then, which is on my left side. 01:16:52.000 --> 01:16:56.000 Now bagpipes come in two, basically two 01:16:56.000 --> 01:16:60.000 species, or actually genus it would be, wouldn't it? 01:17:00.000 --> 01:17:04.000 There's mouth blown and dry blown or bellows blown as they 01:17:04.000 --> 01:17:08.000 call it. So the Uilleann pipes are the bellows are dry blown bagpipe. 01:17:08.000 --> 01:17:12.000 And so anyway, I'm pumping with the right, I'm squeezing with the left. 01:17:12.000 --> 01:17:16.000 Now the chanter has two octaves in range. 01:17:16.000 --> 01:17:19.000 Scottish bagpipe only really has one octave plus an extra note. 01:17:19.000 --> 01:17:22.000 So this has two octaves and the chanter is in the key of D. 01:17:22.000 --> 01:17:28.000 music 01:17:28.000 --> 01:17:31.000 So you get the melody. Then you've got the drone. 01:17:31.000 --> 01:17:33.000 music 01:17:33.000 --> 01:17:37.000 Which is in the key of D. Now most bagpipes do have a drone of some sort. 01:17:37.000 --> 01:17:42.000 But then the Uilleann pipes have a very interesting addition, so. 01:17:42.000 --> 01:17:46.000 So far we've got one pipe, that's one. And we do the music live. 01:35:16.000 --> 01:35:19.000 With 150 musicians on stage. 01:35:19.000 --> 01:35:23.000 So it's the exact instrumentation and the exact music from 01:35:23.000 --> 01:35:25.000 the original film except live. 01:35:25.000 --> 01:35:30.000 So we've got a 90 piece orchestra and we have 45 piece boy's choir. 01:35:30.000 --> 01:35:35.000 And then myself on the pipes and the whistles and then we have the Soprano soloist singing. 01:35:35.000 --> 01:35:41.000 So it's been great. I've been all over the world with the show and a week from tonight I'll be getting on an airplane to 01:35:41.000 --> 01:35:44.000 do it for the first time in New Zealand. So we will be in Auckland, 01:35:44.000 --> 01:35:48.000 New Zealand in about ten days. And this is when Rose is floating on 01:36:32.000 --> 01:36:37.000 the piece of wood, kind of drift, or whatever the 01:36:37.000 --> 01:36:40.000 some part of the ship that's still floating, just a scrap of wood 01:36:40.000 --> 01:36:45.000 and she's been holding on do Jack, Leonardo DiCaprio. 01:36:45.000 --> 01:36:50.000 You know to his hand, so this is the part where 01:36:50.000 --> 01:36:54.000 they've sort of drifted off into the frozen sort of 01:36:54.000 --> 01:36:58.000 subconscious of they're you know trying to survive and 01:36:58.000 --> 01:36:63.000 they hear that a boat is coming back. So having seen the film at least 01:37:20.000 --> 01:37:23.000 forty nine to fifty seven times 01:37:23.000 --> 01:37:28.000 doing the show, which maybe still not as many as the teenagers at the 01:37:28.000 --> 01:37:30.000 time when they went to go see Titanic. I believe 01:37:30.000 --> 01:37:35.000 teenager, teenage girls probably saw it at least a hundred times I've been told. But 01:37:35.000 --> 01:37:39.000 in any case, so this is 01:37:39.000 --> 01:37:44.000 If you watch the film there's, I don't know why they did this, but she's holding onto his hand 01:37:44.000 --> 01:37:48.000 and then this theme comes in and she realizes that he's 01:37:48.000 --> 01:37:52.000 died of hypothermia, but she peels her hand off and you actually hear 01:37:52.000 --> 01:37:57.000 it go Crack!
