00:00:35.000 I do but there are some really 00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:36.000 interesting things about the 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:38.000 organization and how things work 00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:39.000 that -- I learned this morning 00:00:39.000 --> 00:00:41.000 that -- I'll just chat with you 00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:42.000 about as I go through the 00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:44.000 sides -- and I -- I'm Research 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:21.000 and then I'm gonna open it up 00:01:21.000 --> 00:01:24.000 to questions and discussion so 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:25.000 first of all why am I excited 00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:27.000 to be here so I know this 00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:28.000 might not it may or may not 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:30.000 feel exciting to have a to have 00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:31.000 the first but does this look familiar 00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:34.000 to anybody yeah your strategic 00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:36.000 plan I know strategic plan 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:37.000 isn't always what gets everyone 00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:39.000 excited and jumping up and down 00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:41.000 but as an outsider and looking at 00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:43.000 this position and being tasked 00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:44.000 with giving a presentation on 00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:46.000 my vision for Graduate Studies 00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:47.000 and Research I really went 00:01:47.000 --> 00:01:50.000 into who is Western Oregon 00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:52.000 who who are you and I know 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:53.000 that you can only get so much 00:01:53.000 --> 00:01:55.000 of that from a website but let 00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:56.000 me tell you I've I've tried to 00:01:56.000 --> 00:01:58.000 get as much as I possibly can 00:01:58.000 --> 00:01:60.000 I've even learned a lot more -- 00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:01.000 today so I did a deep dive into 00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:03.000 the strategic plan in addition 00:02:03.000 --> 00:02:05.000 to looking at the website and 00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:07.000 watching videos from faculty 00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:10.000 and students and about all 00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:11.000 different kinds of events and 00:02:11.000 --> 00:02:12.000 things but when I went to the 00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:13.000 strategic framework I thought 00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:14.000 to myself you know this is really 00:02:14.000 --> 00:02:15.000 important because this is what 00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:17.000 you've decided that you want 00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:18.000 and that you're going to hold 00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:19.000 yourself accountable to and 00:02:19.000 --> 00:02:22.000 seeing -- seeing where your 00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:23.000 priorities are and how this 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:24.000 might fit into a vision for 00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:26.000 research and graduate studies 00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:27.000 so part of thinking about who 00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:29.000 you are I I mean I read into 00:02:29.000 --> 00:02:31.000 it and I got very excited about 00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:32.000 many aspects but then I thought 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:33.000 well maybe there's something 00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:35.000 I'm missing here and so I took 00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:37.000 all of I just did a simple like 00:02:39.000 --> 00:02:40.000 copied it all up and pasted 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:43.000 all into a word cloud app that 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:44.000 you know takes the frequency 00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:47.000 of each word used and and shows 00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:48.000 you anyways when we get to 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:50.000 the point you'll see here and 00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:52.000 here's what I came up with so 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:54.000 this is your strategic plan in 00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:55.000 the word cloud and I thought 00:02:55.000 --> 00:02:56.000 it was really nice because it 00:02:56.000 --> 00:02:58.000 really reinforced who you say 00:02:58.000 --> 00:02:60.000 you are so you are a student 00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:03.000 centered university and student 00:03:03.000 --> 00:03:05.000 is absolutely the the word 00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:06.000 most frequently used in your 00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:08.000 strategic plan I definitely 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:09.000 got the sense that you are 00:03:09.000 --> 00:03:12.000 strengths minded so if you 00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:13.000 look at things like the word 00:03:13.000 --> 00:03:15.000 support is very big here you're 00:03:15.000 --> 00:03:17.000 very intentional there was lots 00:03:17.000 --> 00:03:19.000 about planning and improving 00:03:19.000 --> 00:03:22.000 promoting educate develop a 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:25.000 lot about values undergirding 00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:27.000 practices and so this showed me 00:03:27.000 --> 00:03:28.000 a lot about your intentionality 00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:30.000 and it got me really excited 00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:31.000 and it made me feel really 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:32.000 even more happy that I applied 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:33.000 because I'll admit I didn't read 00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:34.000 your strategic plan before I 00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:36.000 applied for the position -- but 00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:37.000 now that I have I'm even more 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:39.000 excited to be here I see a lot 00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:41.000 of potential I see a lot of 00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:42.000 areas that are working really 00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:44.000 well for you already but I also 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:45.000 see some areas where there's 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:47.000 potential for further growth and in 00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:48.000 my conversations with many of 00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:50.000 you today I've learned in more 00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:51.000 depth around what those areas 00:03:51.000 --> 00:03:53.000 are as well so in terms of 00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:55.000 your vision to become Oregon's 00:03:55.000 --> 00:03:58.000 campus of choice for students 00:03:58.000 --> 00:03:59.000 faculty and staff who seek 00:03:59.000 --> 00:03:60.000 a student centered learning 00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:01.000 community I think this is well 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:03.000 reflecting your strategic plan 00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:04.000 and I think that there are many 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:06.000 ways that the offices in the 00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:07.000 new organization of research 00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:09.000 and graduate studies together 00:04:09.000 --> 00:04:10.000 or graduate studies and research 00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:13.000 overall vision I'm gonna talk in 00:04:13.000 --> 00:04:15.000 more detail about that and I 00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:16.000 also looked very carefully at 00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:19.000 your five strategic priorities 00:04:19.000 --> 00:04:20.000 and these I'm going to weave 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:22.000 in throughout my vision for 00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:24.000 graduate studies and research 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:26.000 stay at the sort of the bigger 00:04:26.000 --> 00:04:28.000 level vision because one of 00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:30.000 the things about me as a leader 00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:31.000 which I'm getting ahead of 00:04:31.000 --> 00:04:33.000 myself again here is it really 00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:35.000 that my first main value in 00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:37.000 practices to listen and I don't 00:04:37.000 --> 00:04:39.000 yet know that I can give you 00:04:39.000 --> 00:04:41.000 all of the specific things that 00:04:41.000 --> 00:04:43.000 you should or shouldn't do here 00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:46.000 broad framework of how it would 00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:48.000 orient myself towards Graduate 00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:49.000 Studies and Research and so 00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:51.000 these are the five things that 00:04:51.000 --> 00:04:54.000 guided oops there we go that guided -- 00:04:54.000 --> 00:04:56.000 my vision for thinking about -- 00:04:56.000 --> 00:04:58.000 what Graduate Studies and Research 00:04:58.000 --> 00:04:59.000 this new organization could 00:04:59.000 --> 00:04:61.000 provide to give you a little 00:05:01.000 --> 00:05:03.000 bit of background around me -- 00:05:03.000 --> 00:05:05.000 as Melanie mentioned I grew up 00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:07.000 in the Pacific Northwest and 00:05:07.000 --> 00:05:09.000 I went to Central Washington University 00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:10.000 and this is 00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:11.000 actually part of the reason I 00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:13.000 applied for this job was this 00:05:13.000 --> 00:05:16.000 experience at a public regional 00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:18.000 conference of university shaped 00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:21.000 my career in ways that that 00:05:21.000 --> 00:05:22.000 were really foundational to who 00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:24.000 I am as a scholar and a leader 00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:28.000 now -- for example -- having 00:05:28.000 --> 00:05:30.000 the small class sizes having 00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:32.000 opportunities to do research 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:33.000 with faculty that normally at 00:05:33.000 --> 00:05:34.000 a large university wouldn't be 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:36.000 afforded to an undergraduate 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:37.000 unless you were much further 00:05:37.000 --> 00:05:38.000 along in graduate school were 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:40.000 really foundational for me it 00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:41.000 opened my eyes up to things 00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:42.000 that I didn't even know were 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:44.000 possible -- for example I was 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:46.000 I started as a psychology major 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:49.000 at Central and I -- -- did 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:50.000 well in one of my psychology I mean 00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:51.000 I did well in most of my psychology but 00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:52.000 this one particular psychology 00:05:52.000 --> 00:05:54.000 course I did well in and my 00:05:54.000 --> 00:05:55.000 professor Lisa Wine who's now 00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:58.000 in Massachusetts she -- she 00:05:58.000 --> 00:05:59.000 came up to at the end of the semester 00:05:59.000 --> 00:05:60.000 she was like you know I 00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:02.000 I would really love to have 00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:04.000 you on my research team -- and 00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:05.000 she goes I have two graduate 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:06.000 students and I have a spot 00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:08.000 for two undergraduate students 00:06:08.000 --> 00:06:10.000 and you know we're developing 00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:11.000 measurement development in 00:06:11.000 --> 00:06:13.000 terms of -- working with 00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:15.000 college students with ADHD and 00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:19.000 internal restlessness scale 00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:20.000 to -- measure that and it's not 00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:22.000 something that I went into as you 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:24.000 it's not something that I went into 00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:27.000 being a part of a research 00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:28.000 team the faculty and two grad 00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:29.000 students and two undergraduate 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:31.000 students collecting data 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:33.000 learning things about the 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:34.000 analysis and the statistics that 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:35.000 really didn't come alive for 00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:37.000 me in my stats class as I I sort 00:06:37.000 --> 00:06:38.000 of got through those classes 00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:40.000 but doing the actual work in 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:42.000 practice was inspiring and 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:44.000 having that mentorship really 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:45.000 made me decide to go to grad 00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:47.000 school and I still we actually 00:06:47.000 --> 00:06:49.000 ended up publishing one arcticle 00:06:49.000 --> 00:06:50.000 my first article was published 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:52.000 with her -- and that kind of 00:06:52.000 --> 00:06:54.000 opportunity opened doors for me 00:06:54.000 --> 00:06:55.000 that I didn't know how powerful 00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:57.000 those would be and I don't 00:06:57.000 --> 00:06:59.000 experience if I hadn't been at 00:06:59.000 --> 00:06:60.000 a student centered environment 00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:05.000 been seen right and then I 00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:07.000 went on to so I started as 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:08.000 a psych major and then in my 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:11.000 third year I realized I was 00:07:11.000 --> 00:07:12.000 really missing it I was really 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:13.000 passion about child development 00:07:13.000 --> 00:07:14.000 and I really felt like I was 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:18.000 missing a big part of -- of the 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:19.000 context of child development 00:07:19.000 --> 00:07:20.000 I started taking anthropology 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:22.000 classes and realized that I 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:24.000 really needed an anthropology 00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:26.000 perspective in combination and so I 00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:27.000 took on a second major and ended up 00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:28.000 double majoring in psychology 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:30.000 and anthropology and then I went 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:32.000 on and pursued my PhD at 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:33.000 Washington State University 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:35.000 even though I think I told over 00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:36.000 lunch I can't remember who I've told 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:38.000 now but I had promised 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:40.000 myself because I had felt like 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:43.000 was like well you know I'm 00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:45.000 I'm staying in Washington and 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:46.000 I'm doing something so safe 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:48.000 and near my home but for graduate 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:49.000 school I'm definitely going out 00:07:49.000 --> 00:07:50.000 of state but of course I fell 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:52.000 in love with the program right in my state 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:53.000 so you have to be careful about 00:07:53.000 --> 00:07:54.000 these I'm never or I'm always 00:07:54.000 --> 00:07:55.000 going to definitely kinds of 00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:56.000 statements I've learned in my 00:07:56.000 --> 00:07:58.000 life so I went to Washington 00:07:58.000 --> 00:07:61.000 State University -- and I was 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:03.000 and during that time I was -- 00:08:03.000 --> 00:08:05.000 on the campus a lot but I was 00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:06.000 also I was first of all shocked 00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:08.000 by being on a large campus and I 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:09.000 was like wow this is totally 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:10.000 different but in graduate 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:11.000 school of course the courses 00:08:11.000 --> 00:08:12.000 are still smaller and there is 00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:14.000 more of mentoring so I in terms 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:16.000 of individual mentoring so I 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:18.000 felt a little bit at home there 00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:19.000 and I was pretty much every six 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:21.000 months like from the summer 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:23.000 of graduate school either -- 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:25.000 living and working in Central 00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:27.000 Africa collecting -- either 00:08:27.000 --> 00:08:28.000 my masters or my dissertation 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:31.000 data and then -- the next six 00:08:31.000 --> 00:08:32.000 months taking classes sort of 00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:34.000 off and on for those four years 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:40.000 just felt like I got out of 00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:41.000 it and I was like wow is that 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:43.000 it am I really finished like am 00:08:43.000 --> 00:08:45.000 I what am I am I prepared for 00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:47.000 what comes next and I still 00:08:47.000 --> 00:08:49.000 didn't know like anthropology 00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:51.000 psychology how who am I how is 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:52.000 this all coming together but 00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:53.000 I had a wonderful opportunity 00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:56.000 I had been -- I had been 00:08:56.000 --> 00:08:57.000 able to get some competitive 00:08:57.000 --> 00:08:59.000 funding through NICHD to fund 00:08:59.000 --> 00:08:60.000 my doctoral work and I'd 00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:02.000 made really good contacts in a 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:03.000 relationship with the director 00:09:03.000 --> 00:09:04.000 of a small laboratory at 00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:06.000 NIH -- Michael Lam he's no 00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:08.000 longer there now he's he's 00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:10.000 at Cambridge but he -- but he 00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:11.000 had contacted me and said you 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:12.000 know I really like what you're 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:13.000 doing with the with the grant 00:09:13.000 --> 00:09:15.000 and you know we do have postdoc 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:16.000 positions you should apply for 00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:17.000 one and so I was like okay I didn't 00:09:17.000 --> 00:09:19.000 even know that was a thing 00:09:19.000 --> 00:09:20.000 at NIH but let's do that 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:21.000 and so I did and I applied for it and 00:09:21.000 --> 00:09:23.000 I was there for four years and 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:24.000 this really shaped me in terms 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:25.000 of thinking about research so 00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:28.000 not only did I do research full 00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:29.000 time there I missed teaching a 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:31.000 lot I'd been teaching at WSU and I 00:09:31.000 --> 00:09:32.000 admit I'd missed that 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:33.000 but what I but the training I 00:09:33.000 --> 00:09:35.000 received there was invaluable 00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:38.000 to me so I was able to -- as 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:40.000 a postdoctoral fellow we were 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:42.000 much like grad students and 00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:44.000 we were trainees and so we had 00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:46.000 opportunities to observe the 00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:47.000 review panels at an age and 00:09:47.000 --> 00:09:49.000 this was just eye opening to be 00:09:49.000 --> 00:09:51.000 able to sit in on a review panel I mean 00:09:51.000 --> 00:09:52.000 you we were allowed to quietly 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:53.000 observe you couldn't say a 00:09:53.000 --> 00:09:55.000 word but we could observe so 00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:56.000 the process the thinking about 00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:58.000 what are the what are the 00:09:58.000 --> 00:09:59.000 review panel's thinking how are 00:09:59.000 --> 00:09:60.000 they evaluating what's making 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:01.000 grants competitive what's 00:10:01.000 --> 00:10:03.000 making grants not competitive 00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:04.000 and I learned very quickly in 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:06.000 terms of that process and that 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:08.000 really set me up for the -- 00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:10.000 my continued funding throughout 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:13.000 my -- faculty career as well and so 00:10:13.000 --> 00:10:14.000 I was there for four years in 00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:15.000 that developmental psychology 00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:18.000 lab I also worked very closely 00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:19.000 with psychologists during that 00:10:19.000 --> 00:10:21.000 time and so it really broadened 00:10:21.000 --> to this and it's an intensive 00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:54.000 one year leadership program 00:15:54.000 --> 00:15:55.000 for women in higher education 00:15:55.000 --> 00:15:57.000 and -- I went to the one 00:15:57.000 --> 00:15:59.000 in Wellesley and so over a 00:15:59.000 --> 00:15:60.000 course of a year I went 00:16:00.000 --> 00:16:02.000 four different times for 00:16:02.000 --> 00:16:03.000 three to four days at a time 00:16:03.000 --> 00:16:04.000 and worked with one cohort of 00:16:04.000 --> 00:16:06.000 fifty women from all over the 00:16:06.000 --> 00:16:07.000 country who are in different 00:16:07.000 --> 00:16:09.000 leadership positions at that 00:16:09.000 --> 00:16:10.000 time I was Director of Graduate 00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:11.000 Studies there were deans and 00:16:11.000 --> 00:16:13.000 department heads and chairs 00:16:13.000 --> 00:16:15.000 and -- from all different kinds 00:16:15.000 --> 00:16:17.000 of administrative tracks and 00:16:17.000 --> 00:16:19.000 this was -- wow I I don't know 00:16:19.000 --> 00:16:21.000 if I've learned as much in in 00:16:21.000 --> 00:16:23.000 about leadership anywhere but 00:16:23.000 --> 00:16:24.000 we you know we went over 00:16:24.000 --> 00:16:26.000 budget models and trainings in 00:16:26.000 --> 00:16:27.000 conflict management and we had 00:16:27.000 --> 00:16:30.000 panels from women in higher 00:16:30.000 --> 00:16:32.000 leadership at different campuses 00:16:32.000 --> 00:16:33.000 across the university it was 00:16:33.000 --> 00:16:35.000 really exciting and it really 00:16:35.000 --> 00:16:37.000 solidified for me that I did 00:16:37.000 --> 00:16:38.000 want to go into leadership I 00:16:38.000 --> 00:16:40.000 have to admit I as a long term 00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:42.000 faculty member I really wasn't 00:16:42.000 --> 00:16:43.000 sure for awhile I thought oh 00:16:43.000 --> 00:16:44.000 maybe I'm just doing this as 00:16:44.000 --> 00:16:46.000 a side or because nobody else 00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:47.000 will do it or because but then I 00:16:47.000 --> 00:16:48.000 finally admitted to myself 00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:50.000 that actually this is really 00:16:50.000 --> 00:16:51.000 rewarding work and the reason 00:16:51.000 --> 00:16:53.000 it's so rewarding to me is 00:16:53.000 --> 00:16:55.000 because I feel -- as I if I 00:16:55.000 --> 00:16:58.000 can make an impact on a -- 00:16:58.000 --> 00:16:59.000 a larger number of people on 00:16:59.000 --> 00:16:61.000 the campus and so -- doing the 00:17:01.000 --> 00:17:02.000 leadership work has been really 00:17:02.000 --> 00:17:03.000 inspiring for me and then last 00:17:03.000 --> 00:17:06.000 year I was nominated by our 00:17:06.000 --> 00:17:08.000 next chancellor to -- be a part 00:17:08.000 --> 00:17:09.000 of our UT system leadership 00:17:09.000 --> 00:17:11.000 institute so UT's a part of 00:17:11.000 --> 00:17:13.000 a large system of universities 00:17:13.000 --> 00:17:14.000 and five people from each 00:17:14.000 --> 00:17:16.000 campus -- were -- went to this 00:17:16.000 --> 00:17:18.000 week long intensive leadership 00:17:18.000 --> 00:17:19.000 training and we had to turn 00:17:19.000 --> 00:17:20.000 off our cell phones it was very 00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:21.000 I was very like worried like 00:17:21.000 --> 00:17:22.000 turn off my cell phone how is that 00:17:22.000 --> 00:17:24.000 you know turn off your cell phones it was 00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:25.000 all experiential learning 00:17:25.000 --> 00:17:26.000 and we we had to do all this 00:17:26.000 --> 00:17:28.000 role playing and I learned a 00:17:28.000 --> 00:17:29.000 lot more about organizational 00:17:29.000 --> 00:17:31.000 structure and team building 00:17:31.000 --> 00:17:33.000 in that that was really -- 00:17:33.000 --> 00:17:35.000 phenomenal experience so that 00:17:35.000 --> 00:17:36.000 just gives you a flavor of some 00:17:36.000 --> 00:17:37.000 of the experiences relevant to 00:17:37.000 --> 00:17:39.000 this particular position and I 00:17:39.000 --> 00:17:41.000 am currently an administrative 00:17:41.000 --> 00:17:42.000 so part of my effort right now 00:17:42.000 --> 00:17:44.000 I'm faculty but I also have 00:17:44.000 --> 00:17:45.000 a small percentage that goes 00:17:45.000 --> 00:17:47.000 towards administration and I'm 00:17:47.000 --> 00:17:48.000 working with the Division of 00:17:48.000 --> 00:17:49.000 Diversity Engagement on our campus 00:17:49.000 --> 00:17:51.000 under our vice chancellor 00:17:51.000 --> 00:17:52.000 and we're really focusing 00:17:52.000 --> 00:17:54.000 on I'm focusing -- it in that 00:17:54.000 --> 00:17:57.000 position on -- faculty workload 00:17:57.000 --> 00:17:59.000 equity and so I've conducted a 00:17:59.000 --> 00:17:60.000 assessment of the university 00:18:00.000 --> 00:18:01.000 the survey they just closed 00:18:01.000 --> 00:18:04.000 yesterday -- related to faculty 00:18:04.000 --> 00:18:06.000 workload -- looking for where 00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:07.000 there's areas of inequities 00:18:07.000 --> 00:18:10.000 what can we do to -- support 00:18:10.000 --> 00:18:12.000 and alleviate equities 00:18:12.000 --> 00:18:14.000 and what can we put in place that 00:18:14.000 --> 00:18:15.000 we can use to then provide 00:18:15.000 --> 00:18:17.000 information that will help 00:18:17.000 --> 00:18:19.000 deans and department heads to 00:18:19.000 --> 00:18:21.000 to promote a more equitable 00:18:21.000 --> 00:18:22.000 environment in terms of the 00:18:22.000 --> 00:18:24.000 kinds of ways that -- faculties 00:18:24.000 --> 00:18:27.000 efforts are being divided 00:18:30.000 --> 00:18:32.000 also to identities of faculty 00:18:32.000 --> 00:18:33.000 so we are collecting sort of 00:18:33.000 --> 00:18:35.000 identities because we do know 00:18:35.000 --> 00:18:36.000 that there is -- throughout 00:18:36.000 --> 00:18:38.000 higher education there is a 00:18:38.000 --> 00:18:39.000 tendency for invisible labor 00:18:39.000 --> 00:18:41.000 or the kind of labor or effort 00:18:41.000 --> 00:18:42.000 that doesn't get recognized 00:18:42.000 --> 00:18:43.000 or doesn't always get awarded 00:18:43.000 --> 00:18:45.000 or doesn't get compensated 00:18:45.000 --> 00:18:47.000 to be by particularly -- by 00:18:47.000 --> 00:18:49.000 individuals with minoritized 00:18:49.000 --> 00:18:50.000 or historically minoritized 00:18:50.000 --> 00:18:51.000 identities so we're looking 00:18:51.000 --> 00:18:53.000 specifically at that as well 00:18:53.000 --> 00:18:54.000 and this is all sort of as an 00:18:54.000 --> 00:18:56.000 initiative to help increase 00:18:59.000 --> 00:18:60.000 as well as faculty success 00:19:00.000 --> 00:19:02.000 among minoritized groups 00:19:02.000 --> 00:19:04.000 particularly on our campus 00:19:04.000 --> 00:19:05.000 so who am I as a leader hopefully 00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:06.000 you're starting to get a little 00:19:06.000 --> 00:19:07.000 bit of a sense of who I 00:19:07.000 --> 00:19:08.000 am as a leader but let me 00:19:08.000 --> 00:19:10.000 just solidify it a little 00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:12.000 more formally for you so my 00:19:12.000 --> 00:19:13.000 leadership is really centered 00:19:13.000 --> 00:19:15.000 around some core values and 00:19:15.000 --> 00:19:17.000 practices and the first one is 00:19:17.000 --> 00:19:20.000 really listening and I'm doing 00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:21.000 all the talking so it's hard 00:19:21.000 --> 00:19:22.000 to tell that I'm a listener 00:19:22.000 --> 00:19:25.000 also -- but listening is really 00:19:25.000 --> 00:19:27.000 foundational to all of it in 00:19:27.000 --> 00:19:29.000 the sense that as a leader I 00:19:29.000 --> 00:19:32.000 am very aware that I only have 00:19:32.000 --> 00:19:34.000 my lens and my experiences 00:19:34.000 --> 00:19:35.000 and my knowledge and that is 00:19:35.000 --> 00:19:38.000 limited so I need to listen to 00:19:38.000 --> 00:19:39.000 the people around me to get the 00:19:39.000 --> 00:19:41.000 bigger picture and sometimes that 00:19:41.000 --> 00:19:42.000 listening means that sometimes 00:19:42.000 --> 00:19:44.000 I get something wrong and I have to 00:19:44.000 --> 00:19:46.000 say -- I got that wrong but now 00:19:46.000 --> 00:19:48.000 I know more and I can do better 00:19:48.000 --> 00:19:49.000 or we can make a change these 00:19:49.000 --> 00:19:51.000 kind of thing but listening 00:19:51.000 --> 00:19:52.000 and really being receptive 00:19:52.000 --> 00:19:54.000 to hearing the feedback is 00:19:54.000 --> 00:19:55.000 important that doesn't mean I 00:19:55.000 --> 00:19:57.000 always change my mind also but 00:19:57.000 --> 00:19:60.000 understanding understanding 00:20:00.000 --> 00:20:01.000 what people are experiencing 00:20:01.000 --> 00:20:02.000 and their perspectives and what 00:20:02.000 --> 00:22:19.000 --> 00:22:21.000 smaller groups and teams so 00:22:21.000 --> 00:22:23.000 how does so in thinking about 00:22:23.000 --> 00:22:24.000 Graduate Studies and Research 00:22:24.000 --> 00:22:26.000 how does what we're doing or 00:22:26.000 --> 00:22:27.000 what you're going to be doing 00:22:27.000 --> 00:22:29.000 with your new dean here on 00:22:29.000 --> 00:22:31.000 campus how can that story be 00:22:31.000 --> 00:22:33.000 told in a way that helps build 00:22:34.000 --> 00:22:36.000 community that helps build and 00:22:36.000 --> 00:22:38.000 foster collaboration across 00:22:38.000 --> 00:22:39.000 the university what are ways 00:22:39.000 --> 00:22:40.000 of formal communication also 00:22:40.000 --> 00:22:41.000 so yes I'm talking about informal 00:22:41.000 --> 00:22:42.000 communication but I'm 00:22:42.000 --> 00:22:43.000 also talking about broader 00:22:43.000 --> 00:22:46.000 communication here as well 00:22:46.000 --> 00:22:47.000 and my fifth but definitely 00:22:47.000 --> 00:22:49.000 not least important one these 00:22:49.000 --> 00:22:50.000 are all equally important 00:22:50.000 --> 00:22:51.000 values to me is diversity 00:22:51.000 --> 00:22:53.000 equity and inclusion and I really 00:22:53.000 --> 00:22:54.000 believe that in order for 00:22:54.000 --> 00:22:56.000 diversity equity and inclusion to 00:22:56.000 --> 00:22:59.000 be effective it has to be at 00:22:59.000 --> 00:22:61.000 all levels of organizations 00:23:01.000 --> 00:23:03.000 in this case higher education 00:23:03.000 --> 00:23:04.000 organization it has to be 00:23:04.000 --> 00:23:05.000 there's not one person who 00:23:05.000 --> 00:23:08.000 is responsible for it every 00:23:08.000 --> 00:23:09.000 single member of the community 00:23:09.000 --> 00:23:11.000 is responsible for it -- I 00:23:11.000 --> 00:23:13.000 found that this is probably 00:23:13.000 --> 00:23:14.000 that's probably an impossible 00:23:14.000 --> 00:23:16.000 standard that everybody will be 00:23:16.000 --> 00:23:19.000 responsible for it but having 00:23:19.000 --> 00:23:20.000 a large majority of people 00:23:20.000 --> 00:23:22.000 taking responsibility rather 00:23:22.000 --> 00:23:23.000 than leaving it just to the 00:23:23.000 --> 00:23:24.000 leader or just to the person 00:23:24.000 --> 00:23:26.000 who cares a lot about that 00:23:26.000 --> 00:23:28.000 or even worse to the person 00:23:28.000 --> 00:23:30.000 who has experienced an inequity 00:23:30.000 --> 00:23:32.000 right when really it's a shared 00:23:32.000 --> 00:23:34.000 responsibility and so I think 00:23:34.000 --> 00:23:35.000 when it's integrated at all 00:23:35.000 --> 00:23:37.000 levels it is more effective 00:23:37.000 --> 00:23:39.000 and just in terms of if you're 00:23:39.000 --> 00:23:40.000 wondering what I -- what I mean by 00:23:40.000 --> 00:23:41.000 diversity equity inclusion I 00:23:41.000 --> 00:23:42.000 mean a few different things 00:23:42.000 --> 00:23:44.000 here by diversity I'm talking 00:23:44.000 --> 00:23:46.000 very broadly of all kinds of 00:23:46.000 --> 00:23:48.000 different identities of all 00:23:48.000 --> 00:23:50.000 kinds of different abilities 00:23:50.000 --> 00:23:51.000 as well as thought diversity 00:23:51.000 --> 00:23:52.000 right so I'm thinking of it very 00:23:52.000 --> 00:23:56.000 broadly equity is really about 00:23:56.000 --> 00:23:58.000 making sure processes and 00:23:58.000 --> 00:23:60.000 environments are fair and 00:24:00.000 --> 00:24:02.000 people are treated equitably 00:24:02.000 --> 00:24:03.000 so fair doesn't always mean 00:24:03.000 --> 00:24:04.000 giving people the same thing 00:24:04.000 --> 00:24:06.000 but making sure everyone has 00:24:06.000 --> 00:24:07.000 what they need and they feel 00:24:07.000 --> 00:24:10.000 supported and inclusion to 00:24:10.000 --> 00:24:11.000 me so making sure everyone 00:24:11.000 --> 00:24:14.000 has a place at the table and 00:24:14.000 --> 00:24:15.000 this doesn't just mean that 00:24:15.000 --> 00:24:16.000 they were invited but when 00:24:16.000 --> 00:24:18.000 they're at the table it's 00:24:18.000 --> 00:24:20.000 obvious that their opinion is 00:24:20.000 --> 00:24:21.000 also valued and that they can 00:24:21.000 --> 00:24:24.000 speak and that they can contribute so 00:24:24.000 --> 00:24:25.000 these are things that I could 00:24:25.000 --> 00:24:27.000 talk to you all day about and I'm not 00:24:27.000 --> 00:24:29.000 going to my main thing I teach 00:24:29.000 --> 00:24:30.000 at the undergraduate level is diversity 00:24:30.000 --> 00:24:31.000 by children and families so I talk 00:24:31.000 --> 00:24:32.000 and I think a lot about diversity 00:24:32.000 --> 00:24:35.000 equity and inclusion -- but I 00:24:35.000 --> 00:24:36.000 think that talk can only get 00:24:36.000 --> 00:24:39.000 you so far it is important it is 00:24:39.000 --> 00:24:41.000 powerful language as symbols 00:24:41.000 --> 00:24:43.000 of promoting this but I really 00:24:43.000 --> 00:24:44.000 believe you also have to walk 00:24:44.000 --> 00:24:47.000 the walk and so I am committed 00:24:47.000 --> 00:24:49.000 to this and actually these this 00:24:49.000 --> 00:24:52.000 value is what led me into -- 00:24:52.000 --> 00:24:55.000 leadership in the first place 00:24:56.000 --> 00:24:58.000 a faculty member but it was 00:24:58.000 --> 00:24:59.000 advocating when I saw that 00:24:59.000 --> 00:24:61.000 there were inequities that got 00:25:01.000 --> 00:25:02.000 me out of my normal faculty 00:25:04.000 --> 00:25:06.000 realize that leadership is 00:25:06.000 --> 00:25:08.000 important and so even though 00:25:08.000 --> 00:25:10.000 I'm not -- up I'm not pursuing 00:25:10.000 --> 00:25:12.000 a track of of leadership in 00:25:12.000 --> 00:25:14.000 specifically a diversity 00:25:14.000 --> 00:25:16.000 track in terms of -- those 00:25:16.000 --> 00:25:18.000 kinds of positions this is 00:25:18.000 --> 00:25:19.000 actually what originally 00:25:19.000 --> 00:25:20.000 motivated me because of the 00:25:20.000 --> 00:25:22.000 impact you can make -- in 00:25:22.000 --> 00:25:23.000 leadership positions on these 00:25:23.000 --> 00:25:27.000 kinds of things okay so let me 00:25:27.000 --> 00:25:28.000 talk more specifically about 00:25:28.000 --> 00:25:30.000 graduate studies and sponsored 00:25:30.000 --> 00:25:32.000 projects that wasn't the 00:25:32.000 --> 00:25:34.000 smoothest -- lead in but this 00:25:34.000 --> 00:25:35.000 is what -- this is what you're 00:25:35.000 --> 00:25:38.000 all here to hear about so when 00:25:38.000 --> 00:25:39.000 I when I learned about this 00:25:39.000 --> 00:25:40.000 new organization so -- I have 00:25:40.000 --> 00:25:41.000 to admit when I applied for the 00:25:41.000 --> 00:25:42.000 job I didn't know it was a new 00:25:42.000 --> 00:25:44.000 organization because I -- when I 00:25:44.000 --> 00:25:45.000 was at Central and I'd been at 00:25:46.000 --> 00:25:48.000 at other -- similar types of 00:25:48.000 --> 00:25:50.000 universities they are combined 00:25:50.000 --> 00:25:51.000 so I actually -- thought 00:25:51.000 --> 00:25:52.000 of them as sort of combined 00:25:52.000 --> 00:25:54.000 entities and I just assumed -- 00:25:54.000 --> 00:25:55.000 that maybe you were just 00:25:55.000 --> 00:25:58.000 replacing a previous -- and 00:25:58.000 --> 00:25:59.000 that this was the organization 00:25:59.000 --> 00:25:60.000 but then when I learned it was 00:26:00.000 --> 00:26:01.000 a new organization I was like 00:26:01.000 --> 00:26:04.000 oh this is exciting with a new 00:26:04.000 --> 00:26:05.000 organization I know there can 00:26:05.000 --> 00:26:07.000 be some growing pains but there's 00:26:07.000 --> 00:26:11.000 also so many opportunities when 00:26:11.000 --> 00:26:12.000 you're coming into a legacy of 00:26:12.000 --> 00:26:13.000 an organization that's already 00:26:13.000 --> 00:26:15.000 been that way for thirty years 00:26:15.000 --> 00:26:17.000 it's actually a lot harder to 00:26:17.000 --> 00:26:19.000 be innovative why I mean what do 00:26:19.000 --> 00:26:21.000 you hear I heard I've heard 00:26:21.000 --> 00:26:22.000 different things about 00:26:22.000 --> 00:26:23.000 this from different people like 00:26:23.000 --> 00:26:24.000 you hear a lot of things like 00:26:24.000 --> 00:26:25.000 well we've always done it this 00:26:25.000 --> 00:26:27.000 way or it's always been that 00:26:27.000 --> 00:26:28.000 way or we never had to do it 00:26:28.000 --> 00:26:30.000 that way and so I think that 00:26:30.000 --> 00:26:31.000 I'm not saying that I'm here 00:26:31.000 --> 00:26:33.000 to shake things up but I do think 00:26:33.000 --> 00:26:34.000 with a new organization there are 00:26:34.000 --> 00:26:36.000 tremendous opportunities and I 00:26:36.000 --> 00:26:37.000 do think that graduate studies 00:26:37.000 --> 00:26:39.000 and sponsored projects and 00:26:39.000 --> 00:26:42.000 research more broadly are really 00:26:42.000 --> 00:26:43.000 naturally allied kinds of 00:26:43.000 --> 00:26:47.000 offices so I had to say after 00:26:47.000 --> 00:26:49.000 my meeting with -- TRI 00:26:49.000 --> 00:26:50.000 this morning in sponsored 00:26:50.000 --> 00:26:52.000 projects in this I was sort 00:26:52.000 --> 00:26:54.000 of because the -- 00:26:54.000 --> 00:26:55.000 in this I was sort of including 00:26:55.000 --> 00:26:57.000 all sort of research and 00:26:57.000 --> 00:26:59.000 sponsored projects but I really 00:26:59.000 --> 00:26:60.000 realized how the uniqueness 00:27:00.000 --> 00:27:02.000 and the importance of TRI 00:27:02.000 --> 00:27:03.000 too so if I could redo one slide 00:27:03.000 --> 00:27:04.000 this is the slide I'd redo and make it 00:27:04.000 --> 00:27:06.000 three circles coming together 00:27:06.000 --> 00:27:24.000 to thrive as well as sponsored 00:27:24.000 --> 00:27:25.000 projects as well as more 00:27:25.000 --> 00:27:28.000 broadly research in TRI 00:27:28.000 --> 00:27:29.000 but I would also be looking 00:27:29.000 --> 00:27:31.000 for where are the areas that we 00:27:31.000 --> 00:27:34.000 can leverage resources in order 00:27:34.000 --> 00:27:35.000 to strengthen the university --> 00:28:18.000 faculty research and I know you 00:28:18.000 --> 00:28:20.000 already do a lot of this 00:28:20.000 --> 00:28:21.000 and I -- from your website 00:28:21.000 --> 00:28:23.000 I saw a lot of wonderful 00:28:23.000 --> 00:28:24.000 opportunities and promotion of 00:28:24.000 --> 00:28:26.000 undergraduate research I think 00:28:26.000 --> 00:28:27.000 that's fantastic I think there's 00:28:27.000 --> 00:28:29.000 a lot already going on and 00:28:29.000 --> 00:28:30.000 I'm gonna talk a little bit more 00:28:30.000 --> 00:28:31.000 about but I want to think a 00:28:31.000 --> 00:28:32.000 little bit about why student 00:28:32.000 --> 00:28:34.000 faculty research can be such 00:28:37.000 --> 00:28:38.000 that you can capitalize on 00:28:40.000 --> 00:28:41.000 combined so obviously any kind 00:28:41.000 --> 00:28:42.000 of student faculty research 00:28:42.000 --> 00:28:43.000 whether its undergraduate or 00:28:43.000 --> 00:28:46.000 graduate really lies at the 00:28:46.000 --> 00:28:47.000 nexus of these three things 00:28:47.000 --> 00:28:49.000 one it's it's helping with 00:28:49.000 --> 00:28:50.000 faculty development in terms 00:28:50.000 --> 00:28:52.000 of supporting research right 00:28:52.000 --> 00:28:54.000 supporting capacity to apply 00:28:54.000 --> 00:28:56.000 for grants it's absolutely 00:28:56.000 --> 00:28:58.000 we know promoting student 00:28:58.000 --> 00:28:59.000 learning through these 00:28:59.000 --> 00:28:61.000 these experiences that I also 00:29:01.000 --> 00:29:03.000 myself have benefited from as 00:29:03.000 --> 00:29:04.000 I spoke about earlier and of 00:29:04.000 --> 00:29:05.000 course it's creating this new 00:29:05.000 --> 00:29:07.000 knowledge that also continues 00:29:07.000 --> 00:29:09.000 to put Western on the map 00:29:09.000 --> 00:29:11.000 in terms of providing this 00:29:11.000 --> 00:29:13.000 new knowledge to the scholarly 00:29:13.000 --> 00:29:16.000 community so thinking about 00:29:16.000 --> 00:29:17.000 this I was thinking a little 00:29:17.000 --> 00:29:19.000 bit more about student faculty 00:29:19.000 --> 00:29:20.000 research exhibitions and I noticed 00:29:20.000 --> 00:29:22.000 you have a couple of them for 00:29:22.000 --> 00:29:23.000 instance you have the AES 00:29:23.000 --> 00:29:24.000 and the SURE I don't know if 00:29:24.000 --> 00:29:26.000 you spell it out or say sure 00:29:26.000 --> 00:29:28.000 but I'm just gonna got with sure for the moment 00:29:28.000 --> 00:29:30.000 but what I didn't see and 00:29:30.000 --> 00:29:32.000 maybe they exist I didn't see 00:29:32.000 --> 00:29:33.000 a lot of programming around 00:29:33.000 --> 00:29:35.000 specifically graduate student 00:29:35.000 --> 00:29:37.000 or community -- collaborators 00:29:37.000 --> 00:29:38.000 in research I did see that 00:29:38.000 --> 00:29:39.000 you invite community to your 00:29:39.000 --> 00:29:41.000 exhibitions and I think that's 00:29:41.000 --> 00:29:43.000 fantastic and so just one possible 00:29:43.000 --> 00:29:44.000 opportunity of a way to think 00:29:44.000 --> 00:29:46.000 about how these offices might 00:29:46.000 --> 00:29:48.000 provide some overlap -- in 00:29:48.000 --> 00:29:50.000 terms of mutually beneficial 00:29:50.000 --> 00:29:51.000 activities one thing is to think 00:29:51.000 --> 00:29:54.000 about ways that there might be 00:29:56.000 --> 00:29:58.000 related to promoting student 00:29:58.000 --> 00:29:60.000 intentionally involve graduate 00:30:00.000 --> 00:30:01.000 students as well as community 00:30:01.000 --> 00:30:03.000 partners and the reason I'm all of a sudden 00:30:03.000 --> 00:30:04.000 bringing in community partners 00:30:04.000 --> 00:30:06.000 here is one because you do 00:30:06.000 --> 00:30:07.000 have community engagement as a 00:30:07.000 --> 00:30:10.000 large part of your -- of your 00:30:10.000 --> 00:30:12.000 strategic plan -- I I see a 00:30:12.000 --> 00:30:13.000 lot of service learning kinds 00:30:13.000 --> 00:30:15.000 of opportunities already going 00:30:15.000 --> 00:30:17.000 on a lot of practicum intern 00:30:17.000 --> 00:30:18.000 kinds of things already going 00:30:18.000 --> 00:30:20.000 on and -- there may be a lot 00:30:20.000 --> 00:30:21.000 of research with community 00:30:21.000 --> 00:30:22.000 partners going on I just I 00:30:22.000 --> 00:30:23.000 don't know the extent to 00:30:23.000 --> 00:30:25.000 which that's happening but I do 00:30:25.000 --> 00:30:26.000 think that if you think about 00:30:28.000 --> 00:30:30.000 your external funding portfolio 00:30:30.000 --> 00:30:32.000 there's certain kinds of funding 00:30:32.000 --> 00:30:33.000 that you're -- that you can only 00:30:33.000 --> 00:30:36.000 do through applying for 00:30:36.000 --> 00:30:37.000 with a community agency so 00:30:37.000 --> 00:30:38.000 there's certain things only community 00:30:38.000 --> 00:30:40.000 agencies and universities can apply 00:30:40.000 --> 00:30:41.000 for together so creating 00:30:41.000 --> 00:30:43.000 opportunities where students 00:30:43.000 --> 00:30:44.000 and faculty and communities are 00:30:44.000 --> 00:30:46.000 partnering and being able to 00:30:46.000 --> 00:30:47.000 then highlight that and promote 00:30:47.000 --> 00:30:49.000 more of that I think would be 00:30:49.000 --> 00:30:51.000 supportive of faculty development 00:30:51.000 --> 00:30:53.000 of their research agendas 00:30:55.000 --> 00:30:56.000 partnerships that could then 00:30:56.000 --> 00:31:26.000 universities across the nation 00:31:30.000 --> 00:31:32.000 right now that it's either 00:31:32.000 --> 00:31:34.000 stable or -- or maybe 00:31:34.000 --> 00:31:35.000 even a little bit of a downturn 00:31:35.000 --> 00:31:36.000 and that's really common in 00:31:36.000 --> 00:31:38.000 these particular economic 00:31:38.000 --> 00:31:39.000 times there are definitely 00:31:39.000 --> 00:31:40.000 factors that are out of our 00:31:40.000 --> 00:31:42.000 control but there's also other 00:31:42.000 --> 00:31:43.000 things that you can do to sort 00:31:43.000 --> 00:31:44.000 of enhance so I think one way to 00:31:44.000 --> 00:31:46.000 think about it is how are we 00:31:46.000 --> 00:31:47.000 capitalizing on undergraduate 00:31:47.000 --> 00:31:49.000 research as a pipeline for 00:31:49.000 --> 00:31:51.000 graduate recruitment are there 00:31:51.000 --> 00:31:52.000 connections between those two 00:31:52.000 --> 00:31:53.000 processes could there be 00:31:53.000 --> 00:31:54.000 new connections to help with 00:31:54.000 --> 00:31:56.000 that recruitment -- I had some 00:31:56.000 --> 00:31:57.000 really wonderful conversations 00:31:57.000 --> 00:31:59.000 with I think it was well a few 00:31:59.000 --> 00:31:60.000 different groups that one of -- 00:32:00.000 --> 00:32:01.000 definitely the search committee 00:32:01.000 --> 00:32:03.000 00:32:42.000 --> 00:32:44.000 research they may not always 00:32:44.000 --> 00:32:46.000 have the research expertise but 00:32:46.000 --> 00:32:48.000 they're eager to be involved in 00:32:48.000 --> 00:32:49.000 it and I find that my community 00:32:49.000 --> 00:32:51.000 partners -- when given the 00:32:51.000 --> 00:32:52.000 opportunity to be involved in 00:32:52.000 --> 00:32:55.000 research are really excited not 00:32:55.000 --> 00:32:56.000 just because of the grant money 00:32:56.000 --> 00:32:57.000 that could come in but also 00:32:57.000 --> 00:32:59.000 because of the professional 00:32:59.000 --> 00:32:60.000 development opportunities for 00:33:00.000 --> 00:33:02.000 instance -- the sharing of 00:33:02.000 --> 00:33:03.000 resources and sometimes that's 00:33:03.000 --> 00:33:04.000 intellectual resources in 00:33:04.000 --> 00:33:06.000 terms of often times my community 00:33:06.000 --> 00:33:07.000 partners will email me and 00:33:07.000 --> 00:33:09.000 say I'm really trying to teach 00:33:09.000 --> 00:33:10.000 my staff about such and such but 00:33:10.000 --> 00:33:12.000 I can't get past a pay wall for an 00:33:12.000 --> 00:33:13.000 article can you 00:34:16.000 --> 00:34:17.000 things that and I know some 00:34:17.000 --> 00:34:19.000 of you confirmed this things will get 00:34:19.000 --> 00:34:20.000 put off or well when the new 00:34:20.000 --> 00:34:21.000 dean gets here we'll deal with 00:34:21.000 --> 00:34:22.000 that or when the new -- we'll deal 00:34:22.000 --> 00:34:23.000 with that right so making sure 00:34:23.000 --> 00:34:25.000 that things are stable and 00:34:25.000 --> 00:34:26.000 secure and definitely stable 00:34:27.000 --> 00:34:29.000 a first priority but then 00:34:29.000 --> 00:34:30.000 after that is strength and 00:34:30.000 --> 00:34:32.000 or at the same time I have 00:34:32.000 --> 00:34:34.000 some goals or priorities 00:34:34.000 --> 00:34:35.000 that I would hope that this new 00:34:35.000 --> 00:34:36.000 structure would be able to 00:34:36.000 --> 00:34:38.000 address and this is to enhance 00:34:38.000 --> 00:34:40.000 and increase graduate student 00:34:40.000 --> 00:34:42.000 enrollment and retention and 00:34:42.000 --> 00:34:43.000 success and I know a lot goes 00:34:43.000 --> 00:34:45.000 into that line but I also 00:34:45.000 --> 00:34:47.000 know that in these times 00:34:47.000 --> 00:34:50.000 enrollment and student success 00:34:50.000 --> 00:34:52.000 I mean this is the backbone 00:34:52.000 --> 00:34:53.000 of the university and graduate 00:34:53.000 --> 00:34:55.000 studies is a crucial part of 00:34:55.000 --> 00:34:58.000 that and so thinking about 00:34:58.000 --> 00:34:59.000 ways to do that would be high 00:34:59.000 --> 00:34:62.000 on my priority list as well 00:35:02.000 --> 00:35:04.000 as increasing or enhancing 00:35:04.000 --> 00:35:06.000 graduate and undergraduate 00:35:06.000 --> 00:35:07.000 student involvement in research 00:35:07.000 --> 00:35:08.000 which I talked about a little 00:35:08.000 --> 00:35:11.000 bit before as a possible idea 00:35:11.000 --> 00:35:13.000 also thinking carefully about 00:35:13.000 --> 00:35:15.000 how can we enhance and increase 00:35:15.000 --> 00:35:16.000 faculty research development 00:35:16.000 --> 00:35:19.000 many faculty probably already 00:35:19.000 --> 00:35:21.000 have what they need except 00:35:21.000 --> 00:35:23.000 for maybe time right so some 00:35:23.000 --> 00:35:25.000 faculty may just need time 00:35:25.000 --> 00:35:28.000 because they may feel like they 00:35:28.000 --> 00:35:29.000 know what they want to do but 00:35:29.000 --> 00:35:30.000 they don't have the time to 00:35:30.000 --> 00:35:32.000 do it and other faculty may need 00:35:32.000 --> 00:35:34.000 some professional development 00:35:34.000 --> 00:35:35.000 if if they would want to 00:35:37.000 --> 00:35:39.000 of research and I'm not saying 00:35:39.000 --> 00:35:40.000 that that's for every faculty 00:35:40.000 --> 00:35:41.000 on campus but I think thinking 00:35:41.000 --> 00:35:43.000 about how what we can do to 00:35:43.000 --> 00:35:45.000 provide supports I know Eric 00:35:45.000 --> 00:35:47.000 has talked and pre-award has talked 00:35:47.000 --> 00:35:48.000 about a few things he's already 00:35:48.000 --> 00:35:50.000 doing which sound fantastic 00:35:50.000 --> 00:35:51.000 to provide development 00:35:51.000 --> 00:35:54.000 opportunities for faculty to -- 00:35:54.000 --> 00:35:57.000 to seek awards I think there's 00:35:57.000 --> 00:35:59.000 definitely -- -- it sounds like 00:35:59.000 --> 00:35:60.000 some of that's already bearing 00:36:00.000 --> 00:36:02.000 fruit and probably more -- 00:36:02.000 --> 00:36:03.000 that can that can happen in that 00:36:03.000 --> 00:36:05.000 direction too thinking more 00:36:05.000 --> 00:36:06.000 intentionally about community engaged 00:36:06.000 --> 00:36:08.000 scholarship to move beyond just 00:36:08.000 --> 00:36:09.000 service learning and beyond 00:36:09.000 --> 00:36:11.000 just community involvement but 00:36:11.000 --> 00:36:13.000 also as a place for learning 00:36:13.000 --> 00:36:14.000 environment for students but 00:36:14.000 --> 00:36:17.000 how can we also transform or 00:36:17.000 --> 00:36:18.000 help those relationships involved 00:36:18.000 --> 00:36:20.000 into community engaged research 00:36:20.000 --> 00:36:21.000 that can also expand sort of 00:36:21.000 --> 00:36:23.000 the portfolio for external 00:36:23.000 --> 00:36:26.000 funding and then of course 00:36:26.000 --> 00:36:27.000 enhancing and increasing external 00:36:27.000 --> 00:36:29.000 grants and contracts I know 00:36:29.000 --> 00:36:31.000 it's easier said than done 00:36:31.000 --> 00:36:32.000 but hearing about some of 00:36:32.000 --> 00:36:33.000 the things you're already 00:36:33.000 --> 00:36:34.000 doing I think that you're 00:36:34.000 --> 00:36:36.000 already on that -- on that 00:36:36.000 --> 00:36:38.000 track and with some support 00:36:40.000 --> 00:36:41.000 some of the existing things 00:36:41.000 --> 00:36:43.000 and maybe some new things 00:36:43.000 --> of leaders who have these 00:37:24.000 --> 00:37:27.000 fantastic ideas but aren't 00:37:27.000 --> 00:37:29.000 attentive to relationships and 00:37:29.000 --> 00:37:31.000 their ideas don't get very 00:37:31.000 --> 00:37:33.000 far because you can't you 00:37:33.000 --> 00:37:35.000 can't you don't do it because you have 00:37:35.000 --> 00:37:36.000 the most inspiring you don't 00:37:36.000 --> 00:37:37.000 get -- change doesn't happen because 00:37:37.000 --> 00:37:38.000 you have the most inspiring 00:37:38.000 --> 00:37:40.000 message although inspiring messages 00:37:40.000 --> 00:37:41.000 can be good it happens 00:37:41.000 --> 00:37:43.000 because you have buy-in because 00:37:43.000 --> 00:37:45.000 you've created relationships 00:37:45.000 --> 00:37:47.000 because you have trust and because people 00:37:47.000 --> 00:37:49.000 are willing to go at it with you 00:37:49.000 --> 00:37:50.000 right and so I would need to 00:37:50.000 --> 00:37:52.000 be cultivating needs are I 00:38:09.000 --> 00:38:10.000 would want to create a shared 00:38:10.000 --> 00:38:12.000 vision for the integrated 00:38:12.000 --> 00:38:14.000 office so even though graduate 00:38:14.000 --> 00:38:16.000 studies would still have its 00:38:16.000 --> 00:38:17.000 priorities and its functions 00:38:17.000 --> 00:38:18.000 and sponsored projects and 00:38:18.000 --> 00:38:20.000 research would too there could 00:38:20.000 --> 00:38:23.000 be a shared vision that I think 00:38:23.000 --> 00:38:27.000 would help then guide the next few years 00:38:27.000 --> 00:38:29.000 and then as a leader to sort of 00:38:29.000 --> 00:38:31.000 carry through with this there's 00:38:31.000 --> 00:38:32.000 two things that always come to mind 00:38:32.000 --> 00:38:34.000 when people come to me whenever I'm 00:38:34.000 --> 00:38:35.000 in leadership position with an 00:38:35.000 --> 00:38:37.000 issue and I always think to myself 00:38:37.000 --> 00:38:39.000 what barrier can I remove for them 00:38:39.000 --> 00:38:42.000 and what capacity can I build and 00:38:42.000 --> 00:38:43.000 I'm just always asking myself 00:38:43.000 --> 00:38:45.000 what barrier can I remove 00:38:45.000 --> 00:38:46.000 and what or what can I support 00:38:46.000 --> 00:38:48.000 how can I build capacity 00:38:48.000 --> 00:38:49.000 and what barrier can I remove so 00:38:49.000 --> 00:38:51.000 for instance thinking of 00:38:51.000 --> 00:38:52.000 barriers that can be removed and I 00:38:52.000 --> 00:38:53.000 don't know exactly what they 00:38:53.000 --> 00:38:55.000 are but one way to think about 00:38:55.000 --> 00:38:57.000 this is how do we capitalize 00:38:57.000 --> 00:38:58.000 on existing strengths and remove 00:38:58.000 --> 00:38:60.000 the barriers that may be in 00:39:00.000 --> 00:39:01.000 the way of some of those 00:39:01.000 --> 00:39:03.000 existing strengths but looking 00:39:03.000 --> 00:39:05.000 very 00:39:14.000 --> 00:39:15.000 programs and research in a ways 00:39:15.000 --> 00:39:18.000 to make things cohesive 00:39:18.000 --> 00:39:19.000 and that's one possible 00:39:19.000 --> 00:39:21.000 way of thinking of barriers there's 00:39:21.000 --> 00:39:22.000 probably other barriers as well 00:39:22.000 --> 00:39:25.000 in terms of building capacity -- one 00:39:26.000 --> 00:39:27.000 kinds of things that may or may 00:39:27.000 --> 00:39:29.000 not be as relevant to you I was 00:39:29.000 --> 00:39:31.000 thinking about not only how I 00:39:31.000 --> 00:39:32.000 might be able to facilitate new 00:39:32.000 --> 00:39:34.000 community partnerships which is 00:39:34.000 --> 00:39:35.000 something important to me but 00:39:35.000 --> 00:39:36.000 also thinking about if there's 00:39:36.000 --> 00:39:37.000 interest in facilitating 00:39:37.000 --> 00:39:38.000 international partnerships 00:39:38.000 --> 00:39:39.000 that's something that I have a 00:39:39.000 --> 00:39:41.000 lot of experience in and I would 00:39:41.000 --> 00:39:43.000 be very open to -- supporting the 00:39:43.000 --> 00:39:45.000 campus on -- and also thinking 00:39:45.000 --> 00:39:46.000 about leveraging resources to 00:39:46.000 --> 00:39:48.000 secure new sources of external 00:39:48.000 --> 00:39:50.000 funding and a lot of this can 00:39:50.000 --> 00:39:52.000 be leveraging of expertise 00:39:52.000 --> 00:39:53.000 as well leveraging money and 00:39:53.000 --> 00:39:54.000 resources can be good but 00:39:54.000 --> 00:39:56.000 there's other kinds of resources 00:39:56.000 --> 00:39:57.000 there's intellectual resources 00:39:57.000 --> 00:39:59.000 there's human resources these 00:39:59.000 --> 00:39:60.000 kinds of things and talking 00:40:00.000 --> 00:40:02.000 with early in the day with 00:40:03.000 --> 00:40:05.000 sponsored project and TRI I 00:40:05.000 --> 00:40:06.000 saw lots of opportunities 00:40:06.000 --> 00:40:08.000 to leverage resources it
