00:01:23.000 Science and it brought together 00:01:23.000 --> 00:01:24.000 the engineering colleges the 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:25.000 some of the arts and science 00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:27.000 primarily physics and we ended 00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:29.000 up getting a lot of -- NASA 00:01:29.000 --> 00:01:31.000 money at the time and then 00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:32.000 while I was there I was --> 00:01:39.000 NASA for a couple years on a 00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:41.000 rotator position and it was not 00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:42.000 because I was graded anything 00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:43.000 I just happened to be in the right 00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:45.000 place at the right time and 00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:47.000 which really opened the doors and 00:01:47.000 --> 00:01:49.000 connected let 00:02:02.000 rethink undergraduate teaching 00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:04.000 of STEM courses now then we 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:05.000 didn't call it STEM we called 00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:06.000 it SMET that sounded bad so 00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:08.000 they changed it to STEM but 00:02:11.000 --> 00:02:13.000 more students would go into 00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:15.000 STEM if they had a better 00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:17.000 experience in those freshmen 00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:19.000 and sophomore courses and we 00:02:19.000 --> 00:02:20.000 served a number of universities 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:21.000 and they actually have an 00:02:21.000 --> 00:02:22.000 archive site where you can kind of see 00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:23.000 all the universities that were 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:28.000 involved -- that then led me 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:30.000 I spent twelve years in Idaho 00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:32.000 then I -- had the opportunity 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:35.000 to go to Illinois state I was 00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:36.000 there for a year and I got 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:38.000 a phone call and I got this 00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:39.000 incredible offer from the 00:02:39.000 --> 00:02:40.000 University of Texas at Tyler 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:43.000 to be an endowed chair and the 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:44.000 money was good and all that 00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:46.000 stuff and so I -- I took the 00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:47.000 job where I then started what's 00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:49.000 called the Ingenuity Center 00:02:49.000 --> 00:02:51.000 it's a soft money shop in its 00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:53.000 heyday it had over five hundred 00:02:53.000 --> 00:02:55.000 employees at one time supported 00:02:55.000 --> 00:02:56.000 lots of students had lots of 00:02:56.000 --> University of Texas at Tyler 00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:04.000 they had about half a million 00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:07.000 dollars in external funding -- 00:03:07.000 --> 00:03:09.000 it was one of the newer UT campuses 00:03:09.000 --> 00:03:12.000 and -- we've but we grew it to 00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:14.000 in a few minutes I also had the opportunity 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:16.000 to get a fellowship at the 00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:17.000 Globe Program are you guys familiar with 00:03:17.000 --> 00:03:19.000 Globe at all it's an environmental 00:03:19.000 --> 00:03:22.000 program it's funded by NASA 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:24.000 NSF -- NOAA and the US Department 00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:26.000 of State -- international program -- 00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:28.000 but anyway I spent a year in 00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:33.000 at the -- UCAR which is the 00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:35.000 for atmospheric research and 00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:37.000 then -- that map shows you all 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:38.000 the different sort of globe 00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:40.000 countries so it's a big deal 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:41.000 some of the time China is a 00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:43.000 member but I guess we're in 00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:44.000 a spat right now so they stopped 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:45.000 being a member for the moment 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:47.000 and they'll be back later 00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:09.000 walked into their board meeting 00:04:09.000 --> 00:04:10.000 and said -- you know the 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:12.000 university should take you over 00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:13.000 you'd be better off and they 00:04:13.000 --> 00:04:15.000 threw me out promptly and then 00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:16.000 about six weeks later I got 00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:18.000 a call saying what did you have 00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:20.000 in mind and so it worked out 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:21.000 great relationship the museum 00:04:21.000 --> 00:04:23.000 makes enough money now the we 00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:24.000 have a an outreach center as a 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:27.000 result and then -- started the 00:04:27.000 --> 00:04:29.000 University Academies when they 00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:30.000 originally were chartered 00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:32.000 they were called the innovation academies 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:33.000 these were designed to be 00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:34.000 laboratory schools though when 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:36.000 the charter rules changed it 00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:37.000 became very cost effective 00:04:37.000 --> 00:04:39.000 and the university actually 00:04:41.000 --> 00:04:43.000 support as a result of that 00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:47.000 million dollars a year as a 00:04:47.000 --> 00:04:48.000 result but no funding from 00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:50.000 the university budget can be 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:52.000 used towards the schools and 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:54.000 so that was sort of a win win 00:04:54.000 --> 00:04:57.000 win scenario for everybody 00:04:57.000 --> 00:04:58.000 and then -- I'm involved with 00:04:58.000 --> 00:04:60.000 the Texas Stem Coalition which 00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:02.000 is a 501c3 00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:04.000 it's an outgrowth of 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:05.000 the ingenuity center and the 00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:06.000 other six centers that were 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:08.000 in the state when the Texas 00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:09.000 education agency said that we 00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:11.000 would no longer have funding 00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:13.000 for -- direct funding for STEM 00:05:13.000 --> 00:05:14.000 centers that we were charged 00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:15.000 with becoming self sufficient 00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:17.000 we are self sufficient we host 00:05:17.000 --> 00:05:19.000 an annual STEM conference -- 00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:21.000 we had it last week in Austin 00:05:21.000 --> 00:05:23.000 people there we've had as many 00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:24.000 as eleven hundred but it's a 00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:26.000 big but hosting conferences 00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:27.000 believe it or not it can be 00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:28.000 another revenue stream that 00:06:20.000 K-12 work we have a blueprint 00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:22.000 we use for the schools I work 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:23.000 with to do school improvement 00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:26.000 we don't do it if -- if it 00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:27.000 can be aligned to the blueprint 00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:29.000 we do it and and it can be 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:31.000 anything it just has to 00:06:57.000 but we decided principals 00:06:57.000 --> 00:06:58.000 have too much time then to 00:06:58.000 --> 00:06:59.000 be the instructional leader 00:06:59.000 --> 00:06:60.000 they've got too many other 00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:02.000 things to do so we set up a 00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:03.000 with coaching and they handle 00:07:03.000 --> 00:07:04.000 all the STAAR assessments 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:06.000 and things that we do in Texas 00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:09.000 that are crazy and -- and so -- and 00:07:09.000 --> 00:07:11.000 those schools are highly rated 00:07:11.000 --> 00:07:12.000 when we started work in urban 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:14.000 schools the model had to be 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:15.000 adjusted and we have three 00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:18.000 teams we have a instructional 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:20.000 team we have a administrative team 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:22.000 and we have a student support 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:24.000 team which is basically an SEL team 00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:28.000 practices and and -- totally 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:30.000 different sort of set up than 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:32.000 what we would do in a less 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:34.000 diverse school and so the next 00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:36.000 one up there but it -- the 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:38.000 key is I underlined success 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:40.000 everyone has to be successful 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:41.000 alright it's about student 00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:42.000 success you hire a faculty member 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:44.000 we need to invest and it be 00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:46.000 successful if hire a staff member 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:47.000 need to work with them to be 00:07:47.000 --> 00:07:48.000 successful doesn't always work out 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:50.000 but if that if they know that 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:51.000 that's what you have in mind 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:52.000 for them they'll usually work 00:07:52.000 --> 00:08:19.000 curriculum and they want good 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:21.000 instruction and the newest piece 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:23.000 that really matters is how do 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:24.000 we assess all that whether it's 00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:25.000 accreditation or just is it 00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:28.000 work force outcomes is it -- 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:30.000 just is my program up to date 00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:31.000 that's all very important or 00:08:31.000 --> 00:08:33.000 else you you can have a great 00:08:33.000 --> 00:08:34.000 reputation a great program but 00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:36.000 over time your program will 00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:38.000 feel out of date and that is 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:39.000 really something you have to focus 00:08:39.000 --> 00:08:42.000 on strategic alliances that 00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:44.000 driven making sure and it's 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:45.000 all about relationship building 00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:46.000 whether school of mission creep for 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:22.000 the university we needed a 00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:24.000 presence in downtown Tyler and 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:25.000 that was something that was on 00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:27.000 the agenda of our president at 00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:29.000 that time and he did not want 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:30.000 to spend a bunch of money on 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:31.000 a building that probably wouldn't get 00:09:31.000 --> 00:09:33.000 used very much and he didn't want to 00:09:33.000 --> 00:09:34.000 so here was a way that it was 00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:36.000 win win their building has two 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:38.000 facilities they had the main exhibits 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:39.000 by the way students worked 00:09:39.000 --> 00:09:40.000 there for free as internships 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:41.000 they run the store if they're 00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:43.000 in business they learn how to 00:09:43.000 --> 00:09:45.000 do the sales tax the engineers 00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:47.000 build exhibits the artists 00:09:47.000 --> 00:09:48.000 come in and paint the place 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:49.000 it was a win win the city owns 00:09:49.000 --> 00:09:52.000 the buildings and because they 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:53.000 would never pass UT's 00:09:53.000 --> 00:09:54.000 system requirements for 00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:56.000 buildings that we could own and 00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:57.000 it but it was a win win and we 00:09:57.000 --> 00:09:58.000 got our presence downtown and 00:09:58.000 --> 00:09:60.000 everybody knows that UT
