00:00:39.000 together a whole bunch of 00:00:39.000 --> 00:00:41.000 teachers from across the state 00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:42.000 to write the social science 00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:43.000 standards and this happens 00:00:43.000 --> 00:00:46.000 every seven years -- and I was 00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:47.000 chosen to be on that team 00:00:47.000 --> 00:00:48.000 back in 2016 -- 00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:50.000 when I was a classroom teacher 00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:52.000 and so -- for two years we met 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:54.000 and we talked about history 00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:56.000 and geography and political 00:00:57.000 --> 00:00:58.000 and economics and civics and 00:00:58.000 --> 00:00:60.000 government -- and then 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:02.000 something called multicultural 00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:04.000 education or multicultural studies 00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:08.000 years we created these standards 00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:09.000 and then we adopted them into 00:01:09.000 --> 00:01:11.000 state law so in 2018 00:01:11.000 --> 00:01:13.000 we have a set of standards 00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:16.000 and they're -- 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:17.000 anywhere from like a dozen 00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:18.000 two 76 standards 00:01:18.000 --> 00:01:20.000 depending on what year you teach 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:22.000 so does anyone have any 00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:26.000 experience in kindergarten 00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:32.000 first grade, second grade, third grade, fourth 00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:40.000 fifth, sixth oh seventh, eighth 00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:42.000 standards in your 00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:48.000 classroom -- for every grade 00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:49.000 level is so high school has 00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:52.000 three years to teach to those 00:01:53.000 --> 00:01:54.000 some students will take four 00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:56.000 years of source studies -- and 00:01:56.000 --> 00:01:58.000 then the rest of the grades 00:01:58.000 --> 00:01:59.000 it kind of goes down 00:01:59.000 --> 00:01:61.000 from there so -- and then the 00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:02.000 third grade year it's kind of 00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:03.000 our lowest year you have -- a wide body of 00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:32.000 knowledge that you know a 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:33.000 lot of content by the time 00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:34.000 you're done and you have all 00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:36.000 these like analytical skills 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:37.000 kind of critical thinking 00:02:37.000 --> 00:02:38.000 skills -- that we want to 00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:42.000 have as good citizens -- but 00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:43.000 we don't get specific on what 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:45.000 it is that you need to know 00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:47.000 necessarily that -- --> 00:15:13.000 store was really thinking that 00:15:13.000 --> 00:15:14.000 much about getting a booking 00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:15.000 just a world history the title 00:15:15.000 --> 00:15:16.000 so he got me the book -- so I 00:15:16.000 --> 00:15:17.000 kind of put it on the shelf and I 00:15:17.000 --> 00:15:19.000 forgot about it a couple years 00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:20.000 went by and I was like hearing 00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:21.000 this buzz about this book and 00:15:21.000 --> 00:15:23.000 I was like I think I have that book so 00:15:23.000 --> 00:15:25.000 packing up for summer vacation 00:15:25.000 --> 00:15:26.000 real quick grab this book with 00:15:26.000 --> 00:15:28.000 me pretty thick but it's 00:15:28.000 --> 00:15:31.000 amazing because it changed my 00:15:31.000 --> 00:15:32.000 way of thinking about world 00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:34.000 history which had been a 00:15:34.000 --> 00:15:35.000 lot of sort of like national 00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:37.000 histories like European 00:15:37.000 --> 00:15:38.000 history my major in college 00:15:38.000 --> 00:15:40.000 was middle eastern history -- 00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:41.000 I taught western civ for a long time 00:15:41.000 --> 00:15:42.000 I was always thinking 00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:44.000 about like specific countries 00:15:44.000 --> 00:15:45.000 histories and how they fought 00:15:45.000 --> 00:15:47.000 one another and all that -- 00:15:47.000 --> 00:15:49.000 but this really takes human 00:15:49.000 --> 00:15:50.000 evolutionary history -- and 00:15:50.000 --> 00:15:51.000 talks about basically the 00:15:51.000 --> 00:15:53.000 central center part of his 00:15:53.000 --> 00:15:55.000 story is like why have sapiens 00:15:55.000 --> 00:15:57.000 homo sapiens like us as a species 00:15:57.000 --> 00:15:58.000 why have we dominated 00:15:58.000 --> 00:15:61.000 the world as opposed to any 00:16:01.000 --> 00:16:03.000 other species right other like 00:16:03.000 --> 00:16:05.000 homo rectus homo habilis 00:16:05.000 --> 00:16:07.000 those guys Neanderthals -- but 00:16:07.000 --> 00:16:08.000 also like other animals like 00:16:08.000 --> 00:16:10.000 there's more of animals and 00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:12.000 ours then there is of us these 00:16:12.000 --> 00:16:13.000 were insects certainly than the 00:16:13.000 --> 00:16:14.000 rest of us they're stronger and 00:16:14.000 --> 00:16:16.000 faster animals than human beings 00:16:16.000 --> 00:16:18.000 so why did sapiens succeed 00:16:18.000 --> 00:16:19.000 right and so he's gonna go 00:16:19.000 --> 00:16:21.000 through the story and -- one 00:16:21.000 --> 00:16:25.000 of the his dedication -- is to 00:16:25.000 --> 00:16:26.000 Jared Diamond is who he dedicates his 00:16:26.000 --> 00:16:27.000 book to and this is a book that 00:16:27.000 --> 00:16:29.000 I actually use in my classroom 00:16:29.000 --> 00:16:31.000 it's a heavy geography book 00:16:33.000 --> 00:16:34.000 pretty well -- it's probably 00:16:34.000 --> 00:16:35.000 more like middle school high 00:16:35.000 --> 00:16:38.000 school book but there is a -- 00:16:38.000 --> 00:16:39.000 National Geographic video that 00:16:39.000 --> 00:16:40.000 goes along with it it would 00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:41.000 be just good background for 00:16:41.000 --> 00:16:42.000 you probably would use in your 00:16:42.000 --> 00:16:43.000 classroom but good background 00:16:43.000 --> 00:16:45.000 reading or video for you but 00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:46.000 in Guns, Germs, and Steel what 00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:47.000 Jared Diamond talks about is he's an 00:16:47.000 --> 00:16:50.000 anthropologist geographer he is 00:16:50.000 --> 00:16:51.000 trying to answer the question 00:16:51.000 --> 00:16:52.000 of like why did European 00:16:52.000 --> 00:16:55.000 societies succeed and have 00:16:55.000 --> 00:16:57.000 so much stuff somebody asked 00:16:57.000 --> 00:16:58.000 me the question like why you 00:16:58.000 --> but so look for Sapiens 00:19:08.000 --> 00:19:09.000 in a movie theater if I see you 00:19:09.000 --> 00:19:11.000 there I'll buy popcorn and this 00:19:11.000 --> 00:19:12.000 is what I want you to think about 00:19:12.000 --> 00:19:14.000 for your social studies class is 00:19:14.000 --> 00:19:17.000 that human beings are special 00:19:17.000 --> 00:19:19.000 because -- we can cooperate 00:19:19.000 --> 00:19:24.000 flexibly and in large groups 00:19:24.000 --> 00:19:26.000 and so you think about the 00:19:26.000 --> 00:19:27.000 animal kingdom in like the 00:19:27.000 --> 00:19:28.000 first thing that you know 00:19:28.000 --> 00:19:29.000 comes to mind are like other 00:19:29.000 --> 00:19:31.000 groups of animals a corrupt 00:19:31.000 --> 00:19:32.000 can cooperate in these huge 00:19:32.000 --> 00:19:34.000 groups right and one of them 00:19:34.000 --> 00:19:36.000 is bees and so we've seen 00:19:36.000 --> 00:19:38.000 bee hives and you know it's really 00:22:23.000 a digital you know -- electron 00:22:23.000 --> 00:22:24.000 the tells someone that you can 00:22:24.000 --> 00:22:26.000 pay for something and you go 00:22:26.000 --> 00:22:28.000 to a ourselves it's an economic 00:22:46.000 --> 00:22:48.000 story we tell ourselves to make 00:22:48.000 --> 00:22:49.000 sure that we cooperate in these 00:22:49.000 --> 00:22:51.000 large groups all strangers 00:22:51.000 --> 00:22:52.000 cooperating over buying and 00:22:52.000 --> 00:22:54.000 selling stuff another story 00:22:54.000 --> 00:22:56.000 tell ourselves is nationalism 00:22:56.000 --> 00:22:58.000 right a story of who's on 00:22:58.000 --> 00:22:59.000 the in group and who's on the 00:22:59.000 --> 00:22:61.000 out group and we build walls 00:23:01.000 --> 00:23:02.000 right and here's the Great 00:23:02.000 --> 00:23:04.000 Wall of China and on one side 00:23:04.000 --> 00:23:05.000 the Chinese on the other side 00:23:05.000 --> 00:23:06.000 the Mongolians and we're 00:23:06.000 --> 00:23:08.000 building this wall to keep 00:23:08.000 --> 00:23:09.000 our country safe to keep our 00:23:09.000 --> 00:23:12.000 country great and some people 00:23:12.000 --> 00:23:13.000 still talk about walls right 00:23:13.000 --> 00:23:15.000 to keep countries great and 00:23:15.000 --> 00:23:16.000 so this idea of of nationalism 00:23:16.000 --> 00:23:19.000 of walls -- is important one 00:23:19.000 --> 00:23:21.000 nationalism is I think this 00:23:21.000 --> 00:23:22.000 at really at the center of 00:23:22.000 --> 00:23:24.000 what Harari writes about how we 00:23:24.000 --> 00:23:27.000 define who we are as a nation 00:23:27.000 --> 00:23:28.000 and of course that's really 00:23:28.000 --> 00:23:29.000 what's social studies education 00:23:29.000 --> 00:23:31.000 is all about in the first place 00:23:31.000 --> 00:23:32.000 as well we have a class called 00:23:32.000 --> 00:23:33.000 social studies in nineteen 00:23:33.000 --> 00:23:34.000 sixteen they invented this 00:23:34.000 --> 00:23:36.000 class called social studies to 00:23:36.000 --> 00:23:37.000 teach people what it meant to 00:23:37.000 --> 00:23:39.000 be a nation here is a painting 00:23:39.000 --> 00:23:41.000 from French Revolution not the 00:23:41.000 --> 00:23:42.000 American one although it looks kind of 00:23:42.000 --> 00:23:44.000 similar at issue is a big deal 00:23:44.000 --> 00:23:46.000 because the American Revolution 00:23:46.000 --> 00:23:48.000 it changed things for the 00:23:48.000 --> 00:23:50.000 colonists -- the plantation 00:23:50.000 --> 00:23:52.000 owners they no longer had 00:23:52.000 --> 00:23:54.000 to pay British taxes but they 00:23:54.000 --> 00:23:55.000 still got to keep their slaves 00:23:55.000 --> 00:23:57.000 right so wasn't really that revoluntionary 00:23:57.000 --> 00:23:58.000 the French Revolution actually 00:23:58.000 --> 00:23:59.000 changed things got 00:23:59.000 --> 00:23:61.000 rid of the monarchy completely 00:24:01.000 --> 00:24:02.000 killed a lot of people a lot 00:24:02.000 --> 00:24:04.000 of the monarchs -- and then it 00:24:04.000 --> 00:24:07.000 ended slavery -- and then it 00:24:07.000 --> 00:24:09.000 kind of flatten out all 00:24:09.000 --> 00:24:10.000 the classes so there was this three 00:24:10.000 --> 00:24:12.000 classes of French people 00:24:12.000 --> 00:24:13.000 the royalty, the clergy and everybody else 00:24:15.000 --> 00:24:16.000 gonna be equal and so is a 00:24:16.000 --> 00:24:17.000 true revolution and it was 00:24:17.000 --> 00:24:18.000 bloody and they had counter 00:24:18.000 --> 00:24:20.000 revolutions and then deporting 00:24:20.000 --> 00:24:22.000 came to power in it depends 00:24:22.000 --> 00:24:23.000 right it wasn't a simple story 00:24:23.000 --> 00:24:25.000 but the idea of the revolution 00:24:25.000 --> 00:24:27.000 was fraternity like brotherhood 00:24:27.000 --> 00:24:29.000 equality and liberty and that 00:24:29.000 --> 00:24:30.000 was it that's a great kind 00:24:30.000 --> 00:24:31.000 of nationalism that's a kind of 00:24:31.000 --> 00:24:33.000 nationalism that we talk about 00:24:33.000 --> 00:24:34.000 as positive nationalism giving 00:24:34.000 --> 00:24:36.000 rights to people expanding 00:24:36.000 --> 00:24:37.000 rights this is the kind of 00:24:37.000 --> 00:24:39.000 nationalism that's really 00:24:39.000 --> 00:24:41.000 bad right this is the call of 00:24:41.000 --> 00:24:43.000 duty Nazi nationalism the kind 00:24:43.000 --> 00:24:44.000 nationalism that says like 00:24:44.000 --> 00:24:46.000 only these kind of people 00:24:46.000 --> 00:24:47.000 with this color eye this color 00:24:47.000 --> 00:24:49.000 skin these people are the 00:24:49.000 --> 00:24:50.000 in group and everybody else 00:24:50.000 --> 00:24:51.000 should be exterminated right 00:24:51.000 --> 00:24:53.000 now specifically these groups 00:24:53.000 --> 00:24:54.000 should be exterminated that's 00:24:54.000 --> 00:24:55.000 the negative kind of nationalism 00:24:55.000 --> 00:24:56.000 and balancing that out in our 00:24:56.000 --> 00:24:58.000 classrooms it's still really 00:24:58.000 --> 00:24:59.000 relevant like when you talk 00:24:59.000 --> 00:24:60.000 about who it is to be and 00:25:00.000 --> 00:25:01.000 what it is to be an American 00:25:01.000 --> 00:25:05.000 who is an American -- like 00:25:05.000 --> 00:25:06.000 you want this you don't want 00:25:06.000 --> 00:25:08.000 that right now we're getting 00:25:08.000 --> 00:25:10.000 some of this in our news right 00:25:10.000 --> 00:25:11.000 we're hearing more about these 00:25:11.000 --> 00:25:15.000 kind of incidents -- -- I 00:25:15.000 --> 00:25:17.000 was just up at Portland and 00:25:17.000 --> 00:25:19.000 Wilson High School do where 00:25:19.000 --> 00:25:23.000 Wilson is -- a Cleveland High School so two -- 00:25:23.000 --> 00:25:26.000 Portland city schools and both of them 00:25:26.000 --> 00:25:29.000 swastikas on desks -- nooses 00:25:29.000 --> 00:25:31.000 hanging outside the school -- 00:25:31.000 --> 00:25:33.000 like scary stuff stuff that we 00:25:33.000 --> 00:25:35.000 thought we defeated in WWII 00:25:36.000 --> 00:25:37.000 the last goal that he talks about 00:25:37.000 --> 00:25:39.000 human rights that we have told 00:25:39.000 --> 00:25:41.000 ourselves that nationalism 00:25:41.000 --> 00:25:42.000 is not enough right so I have 00:25:42.000 --> 00:25:43.000 to give Americans rights for 00:25:43.000 --> 00:25:45.000 British people rights really 00:25:45.000 --> 00:25:47.000 everybody who's human who can 00:25:47.000 --> 00:25:48.000 cooperate flexibly in large 00:25:48.000 --> 00:25:50.000 groups deserves human rights 00:25:50.000 --> 00:25:52.000 and so that's really much of 00:25:52.000 --> 00:25:53.000 the center of our standards 00:25:53.000 --> 00:25:54.000 when you actually look at them 00:25:54.000 --> 00:25:56.000 you'll see that -- it talks a 00:25:56.000 --> 00:25:57.000 lot about social studies a lot about these 00:25:57.000 --> 00:25:58.000 kinds of freedoms or these 00:25:58.000 --> 00:25:60.000 kinds of rights those are 00:26:00.000 --> 00:26:02.000 important to our our standards 00:26:02.000 --> 00:26:04.000 to convey to your students in 00:26:04.000 --> 00:26:07.000 that K-5 space especially 00:26:07.000 --> 00:26:08.000 cooperate what it means to 00:26:08.000 --> 00:26:10.000 to allow people to express 00:26:10.000 --> 00:26:11.000 themselves what it means to 00:26:11.000 --> 00:26:13.000 protect people's civil rights 00:26:13.000 --> 00:26:14.000 right that balance between 00:26:14.000 --> 00:26:16.000 like it's a free country I 00:26:16.000 --> 00:26:18.000 can say anything I want but 00:26:18.000 --> 00:26:19.000 I also have to be free to 00:26:19.000 --> 00:26:20.000 learn in this environment so 00:26:20.000 --> 00:26:21.000 I can't be bullied or I can't 00:26:21.000 --> 00:26:24.000 be felt to be uncomfortable 00:26:24.000 --> 00:26:26.000 in this classroom one of the 00:26:26.000 --> 00:26:27.000 things we're doing with we have 00:26:27.000 --> 00:26:30.000 the standards these 2018 standards and then 00:26:30.000 --> 00:26:31.000 the Oregon government passed a 00:26:31.000 --> 00:26:32.000 law saying we know what we need 00:26:32.000 --> 00:26:34.000 to make these standards better 00:26:34.000 --> 00:26:36.000 and so they wanted they passed a law 00:26:36.000 --> 00:26:38.000 about ethnic studies right so 00:26:38.000 --> 00:26:40.000 ethics studies was supposed to be like 00:26:40.000 --> 00:26:43.000 Latino history black history 00:26:43.000 --> 00:26:44.000 I say history but I mean social studies 00:26:44.000 --> 00:26:47.000 studies -- Asian American and 00:26:47.000 --> 00:26:51.000 native American but also LGBTQ 00:26:51.000 --> 00:26:54.000 and -- religious minorities -- 00:26:54.000 --> 00:26:56.000 and people with disabilities 00:26:56.000 --> 00:26:57.000 so when you add them all up there's 00:26:57.000 --> 00:26:58.000 like twelve different groups 00:26:58.000 --> 00:26:59.000 that are covered in our new 00:26:59.000 --> 00:26:63.000 standards and -- when you look 00:27:03.000 --> 00:27:04.000 at our current standards you're 00:27:04.000 --> 00:27:05.000 gonna see something called 00:27:05.000 --> 00:27:08.000 multicultural studies those 00:27:08.000 --> 00:27:11.000 are like a holding place that in 2016-18 00:27:11.000 --> 00:27:14.000 we put those to the side 00:27:14.000 --> 00:27:16.000 because we knew ethnic studies 00:27:16.000 --> 00:27:17.000 standards were coming -- but 00:27:17.000 --> 00:27:18.000 we do know what they're gonna 00:27:18.000 --> 00:27:20.000 be yet so -- now I'm gonna 00:27:20.000 --> 00:27:21.000 show you the ethics studies 00:27:21.000 --> 00:27:22.000 standards in just a few minutes 00:27:22.000 --> 00:27:24.000 I won't show you all of them just the ones for 00:28:06.000 that's appropriate for the K-5 00:28:06.000 --> 00:28:07.000 there's not even one 00:28:07.000 --> 00:28:09.000 appropriate for the high school 00:28:11.000 --> 00:28:13.000 level type texts right now -- 00:28:13.000 --> 00:28:14.000 it's a real hoping by delaying 00:28:14.000 --> 00:28:15.000 for two years that we will 00:28:15.000 --> 00:28:17.000 get some some better books in 00:28:17.000 --> 00:28:18.000 the meantime there's a lot of 00:28:18.000 --> 00:28:20.000 small books like this one takes 00:28:20.000 --> 00:28:21.000 a series of books this one's 00:28:21.000 --> 00:28:23.000 about African American Latino 00:28:23.000 --> 00:28:24.000 history but there's also a 00:28:24.000 --> 00:28:27.000 Native American one LGBTQ etc 00:28:27.000 --> 00:28:28.000 so you're gonna have 00:28:28.000 --> 00:28:29.000 to put these in your library 00:28:29.000 --> 00:28:30.000 like you're gonna have to go 00:28:30.000 --> 00:28:31.000 out and get some of these books pretty usable 00:28:54.000 --> 00:28:56.000 for you so what Ortiz says in 00:28:56.000 --> 00:28:58.000 here is really good and I kind 00:28:58.000 --> 00:28:59.000 of put the quote on the board 00:28:59.000 --> 00:28:61.000 because I think like if you 00:29:01.000 --> 00:29:03.000 take away one thing from what 00:29:03.000 --> 00:29:05.000 in the standard to get to this idea 00:29:05.000 --> 00:29:08.000 the goal of this new historical renaissance 00:29:08.000 --> 00:29:09.000 is to create a new origin narrative 00:29:09.000 --> 00:29:12.000 a new story about who we are as Americans 00:29:12.000 --> 00:29:13.000 but that's the narrative 00:29:13.000 --> 00:29:15.000 but we want to tell a new narrative not just 00:29:15.000 --> 00:29:16.000 Washington and Jefferson and 00:29:16.000 --> 00:29:18.000 Hamilton but a new story in 00:29:18.000 --> 00:29:19.000 the way that sort of Hamilton 00:29:19.000 --> 00:29:20.000 tries to do that musical right 00:29:20.000 --> 00:29:22.000 tries to stay like let's put 00:29:22.000 --> 00:29:24.000 story of an American revolution 00:29:24.000 --> 00:29:26.000 and the founding which is a new 00:29:26.000 --> 00:29:27.000 way to look at it money which 00:29:27.000 --> 00:29:28.000 we pierced the presumption 00:29:28.000 --> 00:29:30.000 of American innocence and 00:29:30.000 --> 00:29:31.000 examine more deeply the glossed 00:29:31.000 --> 00:29:32.000 over understanding American 00:29:32.000 --> 00:29:34.000 empower students to gain that 00:29:34.000 --> 00:29:35.000 knowledge my guess is that 00:29:35.000 --> 00:29:36.000 most of you went through high 00:29:36.000 --> 00:29:38.000 school program in which -- they 00:29:38.000 --> 00:29:41.000 did teach you about slavery 00:29:41.000 --> 00:29:42.000 and American 00:29:46.000 --> 00:29:48.000 involvement in war and you know 00:29:48.000 --> 00:29:50.000 some of those things that's 00:29:50.000 --> 00:29:52.000 what this new renaissance of 00:29:52.000 --> 00:29:53.000 American history is overly 00:29:53.000 --> 00:29:54.000 world history but for our 00:29:54.000 --> 00:29:55.000 purposes American history 00:29:55.000 --> 00:29:57.000 about is is really complicating 00:29:57.000 --> 00:29:60.000 the story but not to become 00:30:00.000 --> 00:30:02.000 cynical about American history 00:30:02.000 --> 00:30:03.000 or to run down like that the 00:30:03.000 --> 00:30:05.000 greatness of America -- but 00:30:05.000 --> 00:30:06.000 really to just tell the whole 00:30:06.000 --> 00:30:08.000 story right and to figure out 00:30:08.000 --> 00:30:10.000 like where are Latino actors in 00:30:10.000 --> 00:30:11.000 the story and where are are 00:30:11.000 --> 00:30:12.000 African Americans and where 00:30:12.000 --> 00:30:14.000 are the women how can you 00:30:14.000 --> 00:30:15.000 can't think of a woman that 00:30:15.000 --> 00:30:17.000 was important to my party when 00:30:17.000 --> 00:30:19.000 right I mean there's 15-20 00:30:19.000 --> 00:30:20.000 of you in here and you 00:30:20.000 --> 00:30:22.000 had 3 shots at it so 60-70 00:30:22.000 --> 00:30:23.000 people and nobody could 00:30:23.000 --> 00:30:25.000 come up with a woman or person 00:30:25.000 --> 00:30:26.000 of color like that's a problem 00:30:26.000 --> 00:30:28.000 and it's really not your fault 00:30:28.000 --> 00:30:29.000 right it's really the like oh yeah Jefferson too 00:30:39.000 --> 00:30:41.000 right and go the other way around 00:30:41.000 --> 00:30:42.000 that liberty justice 00:30:42.000 --> 00:30:43.000 for all that's actually from 00:30:43.000 --> 00:30:44.000 his quote but it's also the way 00:30:44.000 --> 00:30:45.000 you're reading started right 00:30:45.000 --> 00:30:46.000 talked about the importance of 00:30:46.000 --> 00:30:47.000 teaching about liberty justice 00:30:47.000 --> 00:30:50.000 for all so good ethnic studies 00:30:50.000 --> 00:30:52.000 history is not about dividing 00:30:52.000 --> 00:30:54.000 America between like the brown 00:30:54.000 --> 00:30:55.000 people over here the black 00:30:55.000 --> 00:30:57.000 people over here and and the 00:30:57.000 --> 00:30:59.000 white people over here -- it's 00:30:59.000 --> 00:30:60.000 this idea of telling the full 00:31:00.000 --> 00:31:02.000 story so we do have justice for 00:31:02.000 --> 00:31:03.000 all right and that's what you 00:31:03.000 --> 00:31:04.000 should try to get out of your 00:31:04.000 --> 00:31:06.000 your students and I think the 00:31:06.000 --> 00:31:08.000 reason I started with the Harari book 00:31:08.000 --> 00:31:09.000 is this idea that you can 00:31:09.000 --> 00:31:11.000 do that through stories but 00:31:11.000 --> 00:31:12.000 you can do that through telling 00:31:12.000 --> 00:31:13.000 stories because that's how 00:31:13.000 --> 00:31:15.000 humans learn and humans will 00:31:15.000 --> 00:31:17.000 do anything for a good story 00:31:17.000 --> 00:31:18.000 right they will build pyramids 00:31:18.000 --> 00:31:21.000 the build walls we'll go to war 00:31:21.000 --> 00:31:22.000 will make peace we'll make the UN 00:31:22.000 --> 00:31:24.000 we'll identify human rights 00:31:24.000 --> 00:31:25.000 will do all those things 00:31:25.000 --> 00:31:26.000 with good stories and that's 00:31:26.000 --> 00:31:28.000 your talent like K-5 00:31:28.000 --> 00:31:29.000 you don't have to
