What are your thoughts? 00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:08.000 What's your opinion? And every year one of the biggest questions they ask 00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:12.000 employers is what should graduates have 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:16.000 to be ready to enter the workforce? What are the tools they need? 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:20.000 What are the skills they need? What is the information they need? 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:24.000 And their 8 top ones that they have said this last year 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:28.000 critical thinking and problem solving, oral and written communication 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:31.000 teamwork and collaboration, 00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:34.000 Digital technology, leadership, 00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:37.000 professionalism slash work ethic 00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:42.000 career management and then then global intercultural fluency. 00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:45.000 These are the pieces that I thought I'd look at because this will 00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:48.000 help you to prepare yourself if you're thinking ahead 00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:52.000 to be able to be ready to graduate and to be attractive 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:56.000 to those employers. Now all of these just to let you know 00:01:56.000 --> 00:01:59.000 need to be demonstrated on your resume in some way. 00:01:59.000 --> 00:01:63.000 So when your resume goes out to employers it says these things 00:02:03.000 --> 00:02:06.000 because if you don't tell them you have these skills 00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:07.000 they're not going to know. 00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:12.000 They're going to know you got your degree, you've taken this test 00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:16.000 you've done this that's all great yeah yeah. But how do you get above 00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:17.000 the person sitting next to you. 00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:20.000 Because each person in this room is going to 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:22.000 have Western on their degree. 00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:24.000 Each person in this room may have a very 00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:28.000 similar background of experience with their internship. 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:32.000 They could have a very similar background of experience with other jobs, 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:34.000 with out skills that they've gained. 00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:36.000 Courses are going to be very similar. 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:40.000 Going to be a lot of pieces that are similar in each of you. 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:43.000 But how do you make yourself stand out. 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:45.000 It's by demonstrating this on your resume. 00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:48.000 And that is one way that our department can help. 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:50.000 I have to get my plug in for our department. 00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:52.000 So this is one way that our department 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:54.000 can help you is by going through your resume 00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:56.000 and really pulling these pieces out. 00:02:56.000 --> 00:02:58.000 Because it truly does help you. 00:02:58.000 --> 00:02:61.000 It truly does get you into those areas 00:03:01.000 --> 00:03:04.000 If they know you have these skills. 00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:05.000 So the first thing that we want to talk about 00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:08.000 is the critical thinking and problem solving. 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:10.000 Take initiative to build these skills. 00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:12.000 It's accept criticism. 00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:15.000 And being able to better yourself through it. 00:03:15.000 --> 00:03:18.000 That's a big piece because some people can say oh well 00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:21.000 you did this wrong. Oh please put it nicer. 00:03:21.000 --> 00:03:24.000 You know, let's build on this, let's strengthen this. 00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:28.000 Let me empower you to be able to encourage and engage and do. 00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:30.000 Not all supervisors are that wonderful. 00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:31.000 Some of them, you did this wrong. 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:36.000 So how do you fix that that's what helps with the critical thinking. 00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:40.000 It's like oh gosh I did this wrong, ugh, if you dwell on that 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:43.000 that's just going to be a lost opportunity. 00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:48.000 So build it, fix it, engage with your supervisor to learn. 00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:51.000 How do I get better? How do I develop this skill? 00:03:51.000 --> 00:03:52.000 How do I grow from this? 00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:56.000 So accepting the criticism and growing form it. 00:03:56.000 --> 00:03:60.000 Ask for additional time if needed. Because we were not quite yet back 00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:23.000 in the office and the student showed up for their appointment 00:06:23.000 --> 00:06:27.000 Student didn't know where we were so they said oh they're not here so 00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:29.000 go ahead and go home and reschedule. 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:31.000 No, we walked into the office 5 minutes late. 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:33.000 We were just running late. 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:37.000 So communicate. Ask when the assignment is due. Find out. 00:06:37.000 --> 00:06:40.000 Present your ideas in a pleasant & respectful demeanor. 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:44.000 And this can be hard. So practice. 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:46.000 Practice when you're talking to another professional. 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:48.000 Practice on each other. 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:51.000 Get yourself into a situation that might make your upset. 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:53.000 That might trigger a bad memory. 00:06:53.000 --> 00:06:57.000 That might put a piece of that emotion out there. 00:06:57.000 --> 00:06:60.000 And practice reigning it back in so you're 00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:03.000 communicating in a pleasant & respectful manner. 00:07:03.000 --> 00:07:07.000 That doesn't say nice with a smile and cheery and happy 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:08.000 That doesn't just always happen. 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:11.000 But respectful is a very important piece. 00:07:11.000 --> 00:07:16.000 Because you're not going in there cussing, yelling and bah, bah, bah. 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:19.000 You're going to say I'm a little confused on this piece 00:07:19.000 --> 00:07:22.000 is there some information you can give me that might help 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:25.000 support my theory, that might help support my decision. 00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:29.000 You're going to ask for the ideas, you're gonna ask for the feedback, 00:07:29.000 --> 00:07:30.000 you're gonna ask for the help. 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:32.000 Because you're going in as a learning member and 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:35.000 and you want to make sure to incorporate them. 00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:37.000 That's part of the respectful demeanor, 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:40.000 Respond right away to emails and phone calls. 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:44.000 Please. That one's a tough one 00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:46.000 especially within the roles that you're going to be in. 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:49.000 You may have clients that are connected with you through emails 00:07:49.000 --> 00:07:51.000 or phone calls. So work with each other's skills. 00:10:27.000 --> 00:10:32.000 Adapt, observe & learn. Adapting to someone else's personality 00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:35.000 style can be rough. But if you're observing and learning from them 00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:39.000 through their skills & talents, it makes you a much stronger team. 00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:43.000 Get to know your co-workers. The ladies slacks or 00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:23.000 skirts with hose. We had to wear hose, 00:12:23.000 --> 00:12:26.000 flats and a button-down, every single day, no matter what. 00:12:26.000 --> 00:12:29.000 Okay, we're on a field trip. Doesn't make a difference. 00:12:29.000 --> 00:12:31.000 That's what the student teachers had to wear. 00:12:31.000 --> 00:12:34.000 One of my best friends was student teaching at another school. 00:12:34.000 --> 00:12:39.000 She was in jeans, sweatshirts and Birkenstocks, everyday. 00:12:39.000 --> 00:12:42.000 Oh my gosh you're kidding me. I had to go spend all this money. 00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:45.000 I was running my hose on a daily basis. 00:12:45.000 --> 00:12:50.000 So I was going through so many hose. This is crazy! How come? 00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:53.000 She's like if I showed up to school looking like you 00:12:53.000 --> 00:12:56.000 my students would never relate to me. I would scare them, 00:12:56.000 --> 00:12:60.000 Because that is not what their parent are. That is not what 00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:03.000 guardians are or their families are of who they're with. 00:13:03.000 --> 00:13:04.000 Like oh, okay. 00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:08.000 Where as in the parents are my school, the majority of them 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:10.000 were doctors, they were lawyers, they were attorneys, 00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:14.000 very much of a different economic background. 00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:18.000 So having that opportunity to be huh...? 00:13:18.000 --> 00:13:20.000 What are they wearing? Why don't I get to wear that? 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:23.000 It was a lot of learning pieces there. 00:13:23.000 --> 00:13:28.000 And it definitely did pull into the team work piece because in my school 00:13:28.000 --> 00:13:31.000 students teachers weren't always observed as equals. 00:13:31.000 --> 00:13:35.000 But the student teachers themselves worked very well together as a team. 00:13:35.000 --> 00:13:40.000 At her school they all worked everybody as a team to support those kids. 00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:42.000 Because that's what the kids were used to. 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:44.000 My school the kids were used to 00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:47.000 very hierarchal type of life. 00:13:47.000 --> 00:13:48.000 So it was very different. 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:51.000 So observe the agency that you in. 00:13:51.000 --> 00:13:55.000 Observe the environment that you're in and then fit in where needed 00:13:55.000 --> 00:13:57.000 and ask the appropriate questions 00:13:57.000 --> 00:13:59.000 and use the appropriate language when you're communicating. 00:13:59.000 --> 00:13:64.000 It maybe a sir. It maybe a madam.
