She truly is an amazing 00:23:24.000 --> 00:23:28.000 student and friend and we are truly honored to have her be apart 00:23:28.000 --> 00:23:31.000 of MSU, we love you Elyse. 00:23:31.000 --> 00:23:36.000 Hello Western, my name is Monica Cerda-Ortiz and I am a coordinator for 00:23:36.000 --> 00:23:39.000 The Multicultural Representatives Program, which is housed under the 00:23:39.000 --> 00:23:44.000 Multicultural Student Services and Programs Office. The MCR's are a 00:23:44.000 --> 00:23:48.000 group of WOU students who are committed to assisting in the retention of 00:23:48.000 --> 00:23:52.000 historically underrepresented and underserved students. They develop 00:23:52.000 --> 00:23:56.000 leadership skills by providing guidance to incoming students from a first generation, 00:23:56.000 --> 00:23:60.000 low-income, and or underrepresented background. 00:24:00.000 --> 00:24:04.000 This year we had amazing MCR mentor's who helped over 130 00:24:04.000 --> 00:24:08.000 incoming student's. They helped them adjust to campus 00:24:08.000 --> 00:24:12.000 and we had mentees nominate the mentors 00:24:12.000 --> 00:24:16.000 for Mentor of the Year and the MCR team has 00:24:16.000 --> 00:24:20.000 chosen two outstanding MCR mentors to receive the award. 00:24:20.000 --> 00:24:24.000 The mentor I will introduce has mentored four students 00:24:24.000 --> 00:24:28.000 throughout this academic year. This is what her mentee's had to say 00:24:28.000 --> 00:24:32.000 about her. My Mentor has supported me in every-way possible. 00:24:32.000 --> 00:24:36.000 She has helped me navigate my major and encouraged me. 00:24:36.000 --> 00:24:40.000 She provided advise and guidance without judgement. 00:24:40.000 --> 00:24:44.000 Without her constant reassurance, my adjustment to college would have been 00:24:44.000 --> 00:24:48.000 so much harder. She has supported me academically and emotionally. 00:24:48.000 --> 00:24:53.000 My mentor is deserving because it didn't feel like she was just trying to 00:24:53.000 --> 00:24:58.000 fulfill her job requirements, it felt like I had someone routing for me 00:24:58.000 --> 00:24:65.000 here at Western. And this is another comment we received from her mentee. 00:25:05.000 --> 00:25:10.000 She has encouraged me and the other people in my group to really get involved 00:25:10.000 --> 00:25:13.000 on campus and even though she had super busy schedule 00:25:13.000 --> 00:25:16.000 she makes sure to check in on everyone of us. 00:25:16.000 --> 00:25:20.000 We are honored to have Denisse Carrasco Garcia 00:25:20.000 --> 00:25:24.000 as one of our MCR mentors and we are honored to award Denisse 00:25:24.000 --> 00:25:28.000 the 2019-2020 MCR Mentor of the Year Award. 00:25:28.000 --> 00:25:32.000 Congratulations Denisse, we are really proud of all your accomplishments. 00:25:32.000 --> 00:25:35.000 Hi everyone, my name is Carlos Martinez and I am one of 00:25:35.000 --> 00:25:39.000 the MCR Coordinators. I work for the MCR program which falls under 00:25:39.000 --> 00:25:43.000 the Multicultural Students Services and Programs office. 00:25:43.000 --> 00:25:48.000 The MCRs are a group of WOU students who are committed to assisting 00:25:48.000 --> 00:25:53.000 in the retention historically underrepresented and underserved students. 00:25:53.000 --> 00:25:57.000 They develop leadership skills by providing guidance to incoming students 00:25:57.000 --> 00:25:62.000 for first generation, low income, and or underrepresented backgrounds. 00:26:04.000 --> 00:26:08.000 This year we had amazing MCR mentors who helped over 130 00:26:08.000 --> 00:26:12.000 incoming students adjust to our campus. 00:26:12.000 --> 00:26:16.000 We asked all mentees to nominate their mentors for this award 00:26:16.000 --> 00:26:20.000 and after many nominations the MCR team has chosen two 00:26:20.000 --> 00:26:26.000 outstanding MCR mentors to receive the award of Mentor of the Year. 00:26:26.000 --> 00:26:31.000 The mentor I will introduce has mentored 5 transfer students throughout this 00:26:31.000 --> 00:26:35.000 academic year. This is what her mentees had to say about her. 00:26:36.000 --> 00:26:40.000 As a transfer student I had some experience as a collage student 00:26:40.000 --> 00:26:43.000 but it was still nerve-racking attending a new university. 00:26:43.000 --> 00:26:48.000 Thankfully Susana made the process much easier. Another comment we 00:26:48.000 --> 00:26:53.000 received from her mentees was, I have learned a lot from Susana 00:26:53.000 --> 00:26:56.000 and I will always follow her lead to help others. 00:26:56.000 --> 00:26:61.000 We are honored to have Susana Cerda Ortiz as one of our MCR mentors 00:27:01.000 --> 00:27:06.000 and this is why we have chosen her to be one of the 2019- 00:27:09.000 --> 00:27:12.000 Congrats Susana, we are proud of you. 00:27:12.000 --> 00:27:15.000 Hello Western, my name is Luanne Carrillo-Avalos and I am an 00:27:15.000 --> 00:27:19.000 Assistant Director for Multicultural Student Services and Programs. It is 00:27:19.000 --> 00:27:24.000 my honor to announce one of the award recipients for MSSP Recognition Award. 00:27:24.000 --> 00:27:28.000 This award was established in the year 2000 as a way to recognize students 00:27:28.000 --> 00:27:32.000 that go above and beyond to serve us in our offices and programs at MSSP. 00:27:32.000 --> 00:27:36.000 Many of our students are so giving of their time and efforts for no other reason 00:27:36.000 --> 00:27:40.000 to give back and to support our efforts in helping first generation, 00:27:40.000 --> 00:27:44.000 underrepresented and underserved students succeed. It is because 00:27:44.000 --> 00:27:48.000 of this that we choose to select a student each that 00:27:48.000 --> 00:27:52.000 exemplifies the ways our students contribute to MSSP. 00:27:52.000 --> 00:27:56.000 We could not do what we do as an office if it was not for the dedication of 00:27:56.000 --> 00:27:60.000 the outstanding students that choose to make connection in our office. This year 00:28:00.000 --> 00:28:04.000 the 20th year of this award, we found it exceptionally difficult to choose 00:28:04.000 --> 00:28:08.000 just one student, so we chose two. 00:28:08.000 --> 00:28:12.000 This years recipients will be awarded with their own individual plaques 00:28:12.000 --> 00:28:15.000 and their names etched into our perpetual plaque that is displayed in our 00:28:15.000 --> 00:28:20.000 MSSP office. MSSP would like to recognize the first award recipient 00:28:20.000 --> 00:28:24.000 Blanca Miranda-Aguilar, as one of the recipients of the 2020 00:28:24.000 --> 00:28:28.000 MSSP Recognition Award. Originally from 00:28:28.000 --> 00:28:32.000 Blanca came to WOU in the fall of 2016. 00:28:32.000 --> 00:28:36.000 Shortly after demonstrating her commitment and hard working skills as a student 00:28:36.000 --> 00:28:41.000 Blanca was hired at MSSP as a student office assistant and since day one 00:28:41.000 --> 00:28:45.000 Blanca became a trust worthy go to for almost everything that pertained to our 00:28:45.000 --> 00:28:50.000 front desk. So much so that she was promoted to Lead Student Office Assistant 00:28:50.000 --> 00:28:55.000 and helped us manage the front desk staff for six months when we were without 00:28:55.000 --> 00:28:59.000 a Program Coordinator. Once the Program Coordinator was hired, she even 00:28:59.000 --> 00:28:63.000 assisted us in training that person. Blanca has not only been a student participant 00:29:03.000 --> 00:29:06.000 in our program, she has been a key member in our team. 00:29:07.000 --> 00:29:12.000 In addition to working in the MSSP Office, Blanca also served in the Executive 00:29:12.000 --> 00:29:15.000 Board Member of the Multicultural Student Union, became a mentor for the 00:29:15.000 --> 00:29:19.000 Multicultural Representatives and stepped in as an intern for the planning of the 00:29:19.000 --> 00:29:23.000 Cesar E. Chavez Leadership Conference. Blanca has been an excellent 00:29:23.000 --> 00:29:28.000 employee, a strong student leader, and was able to balance school 00:29:28.000 --> 00:29:32.000 all while becoming a new mom to baby Rafael. It is her selflessness, 00:29:32.000 --> 00:29:36.000 friendly personality, and charisma that has touched the hearts of many 00:29:36.000 --> 00:29:40.000 at WOU. It is without a doubt that she will be missed 00:29:40.000 --> 00:29:44.000 at MSSP and we will be able to better serve future students because of her 00:29:44.000 --> 00:29:49.000 contributions to our office. Blanca we want you to know that were very proud 00:29:49.000 --> 00:29:53.000 of how far you've come. Your goal was to graduate from Western and you 00:29:53.000 --> 00:29:57.000 did it. Not only are you class of 2020, you're now a role model for many 00:29:57.000 --> 00:29:61.000 students, for your family and for your baby boy. 00:30:01.000 --> 00:30:04.000 We can't wait to see all that you will continue to accomplish in the future. 00:30:04.000 --> 00:30:07.000 Congratulations. Felicidades Blanca 00:30:07.000 --> 00:30:10.000 you are an outstanding example of what it means to be a student leader. 00:30:10.000 --> 00:30:15.000 Hello. It is my honor to present one of the award recipients for the Multicultural 00:30:15.000 --> 00:30:20.000 Student Services and Programs Recognition Award. This award 00:30:20.000 --> 00:30:24.000 was established in the year 2000 as away to recognize students that go above 00:30:24.000 --> 00:30:28.000 and beyond in their service to our office and programs at MSSP. 00:30:28.000 --> 00:30:32.000 Many of our students are so giving of their time and efforts for no other reason 00:30:32.000 --> 00:30:36.000 then to give back and to support our efforts in supporting first generation 00:30:36.000 --> 00:30:40.000 underrepresented and underserved students and helping them succeed. 00:30:40.000 --> 00:30:46.000 It's because of this that we choose and select a student each year that 00:30:46.000 --> 00:30:51.000 exemplifies and show cases the way our students support and 00:30:51.000 --> 00:30:55.000 contribute to MSSP. We could not do what we do an office without the 00:30:56.000 --> 00:30:60.000 dedication from these kinds of students. This year is 00:31:04.000 --> 00:31:08.000 to chose just one student so we decided to choose two. 00:31:08.000 --> 00:31:12.000 This year's recipients will be awarded an individual plaque 00:31:12.000 --> 00:31:16.000 as well as have their names etched on an perpetual plaque that is on display 00:31:16.000 --> 00:31:23.000 at the MSSP office. MSSP would like to recognize Monica Cerda Ortiz 00:31:23.000 --> 00:31:27.000 as one of our recipients for the 2020 MSSP Recognition Award. 00:31:28.000 --> 00:31:32.000 Monica connected with MSSP as a freshmen and incoming Bilingual Teacher 00:31:32.000 --> 00:31:36.000 Scholar in 2016. She quickly connected to our office 00:31:36.000 --> 00:31:39.000 and developed her leadership skills as an MCR Coordinator. 00:31:39.000 --> 00:31:43.000 She has served in that position for the past three years and as an MCR 00:31:43.000 --> 00:31:48.000 Coordinator she has made tremendous contributions to the programs growth and 00:31:48.000 --> 00:31:52.000 evolution. Which now serves over 130 incoming 00:31:52.000 --> 00:31:56.000 MSSP students. Through her years at WOU she's held a variety of 00:31:56.000 --> 00:31:61.000 leadership positions including ASWOU, Ambassadors, PLUS Team and UNIDOS 00:32:01.000 --> 00:32:06.000 just to name a few. Thank you. Muchas Gracias. 00:34:17.000 --> 00:34:21.000 Hi everyone, I wanted to begin by congratulating all 00:34:21.000 --> 00:34:25.000 the MSSP 2020 grads. I am grateful for the opportunities that 00:34:25.000 --> 00:34:28.000 the MSSP office has offered underrepresented students like us and I am 00:34:28.000 --> 00:34:33.000 beyond proud of all of you. I want to thank the MSSP staff for their guidance 00:34:33.000 --> 00:34:37.000 and unconditional support. Thank you Anna, Luanne, and Audrey 00:34:37.000 --> 00:34:41.000 for empowering me, and motivating me to be the leader who I became today. 00:34:41.000 --> 00:34:44.000 I really couldn't have done it without any of you. 00:34:44.000 --> 00:34:49.000 Lastly, I want to end by thanking my family. My sister 00:34:49.000 --> 00:34:54.000 Monica, who most of you know, has been an exceptional leader on campus 00:34:54.000 --> 00:34:58.000 and has inspired me to become one myself, even though she is my little sister. 00:34:58.000 --> 00:34:62.000 And I want to thank my little brother for always being there for me and making 00:35:02.000 --> 00:35:07.000 me laugh when times got difficult during my undergrad career. 00:35:16.000 --> 00:35:20.000 Once again, congrats MSSP grads. Please make sure to celebrate this 00:35:20.000 --> 00:35:24.000 wonderful milestone safely and go wolves. 00:35:24.000 --> 00:35:28.000 Many students say that WOU is home away from home. 00:35:28.000 --> 00:35:32.000 The MSSP Office became that home for me. My first 00:35:32.000 --> 00:35:36.000 year I was an MCR mentee because of the Bilingual Teacher Program 00:35:36.000 --> 00:35:40.000 and I was able to get a mentor that guided me throughout my first year. 00:35:40.000 --> 00:35:44.000 After I had the opportunity to become an MCR Coordinator 00:35:44.000 --> 00:35:48.000 and gain some leadership development and skills that I will take on 00:35:48.000 --> 00:35:52.000 after I leave. I am very appreciative of all the amazing 00:35:52.000 --> 00:35:57.000 MSSP staff that supported me throughout my journey Anna, Luanne and 00:35:57.000 --> 00:35:60.000 Audrey who were always there for me and guided me through 00:36:00.000 --> 00:36:04.000 out my four years. I really couldn't have done this without their support 00:36:04.000 --> 00:36:08.000 and their guidance throughout my time as a first generation college student. 00:36:08.000 --> 00:36:12.000 I would also like to thank my sister and my parents who were a great 00:36:12.000 --> 00:36:15.000 support system for me and were there unconditionally. I really couldn't have 00:36:15.000 --> 00:36:20.000 done this without you all too. Lastly, I want say to all the underrepresented 00:36:20.000 --> 00:36:24.000 students that are graduating this year to keep going, to not let 00:36:24.000 --> 00:36:27.000 imposter syndrome stop you from achieving your goals and that you can 00:36:27.000 --> 00:36:30.000 truly accomplish anything you set your mind to. I'm really going to cherish all of 00:36:30.000 --> 00:36:35.000 the memories I made in the MSSP Office and I wish you all the best as you 00:36:35.000 --> 00:36:39.000 continue your education. Thank you and go wolves. 00:36:39.000 --> 00:36:43.000 Hi everyone.
