It's been a rough few months, 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:27.000 but you've all show the resilience that the entire WOU community has come to expect of our 00:03:27.000 --> 00:03:30.000 students and our graduates. 00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:33.000 Some of you may know that I'm an economist by training. 00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:38.000 Economists are professional analyzers. They evaluate facts without allowing opinion, 00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:41.000 emotion or personal bias to enter the equation. 00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:44.000 They form suggestions based upon the evidence and 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:49.000 the inherent social cost of any scenario. It can be a very idealistic view of the world. 00:03:49.000 --> 00:03:54.000 But it can be frustrating as well. 00:03:49.000 --> 00:03:54.000 Because an economist's best-case reality 00:03:54.000 --> 00:03:56.000 is not how the real world works. 00:03:56.000 --> 00:03:59.000 It's not how the university works. 00:03:56.000 --> 00:03:59.000 Our world is complicated and we make 00:03:59.000 --> 00:03:65.000 many decisions based upon opinion, emotion and personal bias. Factors outside our control, 00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:10.000 such as a pandemic can throw a wrench into our so-called best possible outcomes. 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:16.000 Plans must be adjusted for this new reality. Flexibility in the face of adversity is required. 00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:20.000 In the end, though, adaptability and flexibility are essential skills your time at Western 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:22.000 has given you. 00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:25.000 It will be invaluable in your careers and your personal lives. 00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:30.000 And it will be invaluable in your communities as you participate as a global citizen. 00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:34.000 I commend all of you who are participating in our virtual Commencement exercises today for 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:40.000 your flexibility and dedication to your education '" both the education you gained in the 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:44.000 classroom and the self-realization 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:44.000 you gained through personal growth. 00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:49.000 If I were to put on my economist's hat once again, I'd say the best possible outcome of a 00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:53.000 WOU education is sitting in the 00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:53.000 virtual audience before me. 00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:58.000 You've made it to Commencement Day, and I am certain your future will contain many more 00:04:58.000 --> 00:04:61.000 achievements worth celebrating. 00:05:01.000 --> 00:05:06.000 Finally, I'd like to recognize five Wolves who, like you, continue to make us proud. 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:10.000 from Western many years ago, 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:10.000 They graduated with their degrees 00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:14.000 but they still support our students and our community in so many different ways. 00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:22.000 Our Golden Wolves, who graduated 50 years ago, are Donna Hamor, Mike Holland, 00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:27.000 Our Alumni Award of Excellence winner 00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:27.000 Bob Landwehr and Sandy Sanford. 00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:30.000 for 2020 is Michael Morgan. 00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:34.000 We've created a separate video honoring these five and all the accomplishments they've 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:37.000 Commencement days. 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:37.000 celebrated since their own 00:05:37.000 --> 00:05:39.000 in the sidebar on 00:05:37.000 --> 00:05:39.000 That tribute is available 00:05:39.000 --> 00:05:42.000 this virtual commencement web page. 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:46.000 Betty Komp, the chair of the Western Oregon 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:46.000 Now, I'd like to cede the microphone to 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:61.000 University Board of Trustees, 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:61.000 who will share a few words. 00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:05.000 Good morning 2020 graduates. 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:09.000 On behalf of the Western Oregon University Board of Trustees, 00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:16.000 I want to share our deepest congratulations 00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:16.000 on reaching your goal of obtaining a degree. 00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:22.000 The board's truly impressed and proud at the perseverance that's brought you to this moment 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:25.000 in time, and what a moment it is. 00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:29.000 The challenges you've faced 00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:29.000 in these recent months 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:36.000 prepared you for whatever life brings. 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:36.000 Success at all levels is in your hands. 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:42.000 Congratulations. Thank you to all our friends, family, 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:41.000 faculty, staff, and everyone else 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:41.000 who helped us get here. 00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:43.000 Like many of you, I decided to come to WOU 00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:47.000 because it was affordable, close to home, 00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:47.000 and small in size. 00:07:47.000 --> 00:07:52.000 Little did I know I would be embedded into this diverse, tight knit community I now call home. 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:56.000 My wonderful journey at WOU started with building forever friendships with my freshman 00:07:56.000 --> 00:07:60.000 hallmates playing Sardines, which is like inverted hide-and-go-seek, 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:04.000 on countless Saturdays at midnight. 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:04.000 I was involved in many things; 00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:09.000 I thoroughly enjoyed having my days filled, 00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:09.000 not just with rigorous academics. 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:13.000 Aside from school related activities, 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:13.000 I spent my time hanging out with friends. 00:08:13.000 --> 00:08:18.000 From spontaneous road trips with my Honors' Crew to having BBQs with my Hawai'i family to 00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:23.000 living and travelling with my best bud Ming. All the opportunities at WOU allowed me to further 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:28.000 develop myself as a student, person and leader, and find a job directly related to my 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:32.000 future all while having fun and making memories. Though my days were packed, 00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:38.000 my stress relievers - like club sports and intramurals - kept me balanced and on track. 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:43.000 What were some of your stress relievers? Whatever comes to mind, 00:08:43.000 --> 00:08:46.000 carry them with you because life is bound to get tough again, but you will always be 00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:51.000 stronger than anything life throws at you. As a full time student working a few jobs, 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:56.000 participating in organizations, and somehow getting 7-8 hours of sleep almost every night, 00:08:56.000 --> 00:08:58.000 college taught me that time is abundant. 00:08:58.000 --> 00:08:62.000 music 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:08.000 Some of you may be thinking, "Is she nuts?" 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:08.000 or "Wow, we must have different clocks!" 00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:12.000 and see all the things you've done, 00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:12.000 But really, when you take a look back 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:14.000 you'll notice how much 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:14.000 you can fit into each day. 00:09:14.000 --> 00:09:18.000 College also taught me to 00:09:14.000 --> 00:09:18.000 never let an opportunity go by. 00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:19.000 It may not come again. 00:09:19.000 --> 00:09:23.000 It may not be in the time or in the form 00:09:19.000 --> 00:09:23.000 you were hoping for, but if you 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:27.000 from it that will help you later in life. 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:27.000 you're bound to gain something 00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:31.000 No one person or small group of people can speak on behalf of an entire graduating class. 00:09:31.000 --> 00:09:35.000 at WOU. Whether you worked 3 jobs, 00:09:31.000 --> 00:09:35.000 We've each had our own unique journey 00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:40.000 participated in organizations, or had a family 00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:40.000 to take care of, WOU played a huge role. 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:46.000 It served as a home, an outlet, 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:46.000 or a sea of opportunity for us. 00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:49.000 I surveyed some of my classmates and asked, What 5 words come to mind when you think 00:09:49.000 --> 00:09:52.000 has WOU made on you? 00:09:49.000 --> 00:09:52.000 about WOU? and, What impact 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:56.000 our collective class as a whole. 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:56.000 I want this speech to embody 00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:61.000 What do you think the most common word to come to mind was? COMMUNITY! 00:10:01.000 --> 00:10:06.000 Some other recurring words included supportive, growth, affordable, diversity, 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:11.000 and opportunity. Every response was distinct, but they all implied WOU providing 00:10:11.000 --> 00:10:16.000 opportunities for discovery as a student and person in addition to forming incomparable 00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:20.000 relationships and connections 00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:20.000 with other students, faculty, and staff. 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:26.000 As for my favorite response? Squirrels! Even though it reminded me of my unsuccessful 00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:31.000 attempt to capture Chester the squirrel, 00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:31.000 my first failure of many in college. 00:10:31.000 --> 00:10:37.000 I'm sure we've all had our fair share of failures, adversity may have been the force that brought 00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:40.000 you to this point - becoming college graduates at this very moment. 00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:44.000 The time has come to use what we've learned from our successes and failures coupled with 00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:47.000 our adventures and experiences to make a difference! 00:10:47.000 --> 00:10:52.000 Let's give a big THANK YOU to WOU for providing a journey packed full of experiences 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:56.000 that make you who you are. Now, it's time to celebrate your accomplishments and where 00:10:56.000 --> 00:10:58.000 you are headed. 00:10:58.000 --> 00:10:74.000 Sco' Wolves! 00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:17.000 Al ser una estudiante bilingue y bicultural, 00:11:17.000 --> 00:11:22.000 tengo el privilegio de dar parte 00:11:17.000 --> 00:11:22.000 de mi discurso hoy en mi idioma nativo. 00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:26.000 Primero quiero decir que el estar aqu' presentando a la clase del 2020 00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:29.000 son un gran honor y representa los sacrificios 00:11:29.000 --> 00:11:31.000 que mis padres han hecho 00:11:29.000 --> 00:11:31.000 por mi y mis hermanos. 00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:34.000 Este reconocimiento demuestra 00:11:34.000 --> 00:11:38.000 que con la perseverancia, optimismo 00:11:34.000 --> 00:11:38.000 y un sistema de apoyo, 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:40.000 uno puede alcanzar sus metas. 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:45.000 En la universidad, los sistemas de apoyo 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:45.000 son de gran ayuda para los estudiantes. 00:11:45.000 --> 00:11:49.000 Especialmente para los estudiantes 00:11:45.000 --> 00:11:49.000 de primera generacion. 00:11:49.000 --> 00:11:53.000 La oficina de programas para 00:11:49.000 --> 00:11:53.000 estudiantes multiculturales 00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:55.000 y el programa de enriquecimiento estudiantil 00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:58.000 empodero a muchos estudiantes 00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:58.000 incluyendome a mi, 00:11:58.000 --> 00:11:63.000 y nos guiaron a llegar a donde 00:11:58.000 --> 00:11:63.000 estamos hoy, nuestra graduaci'n. 00:12:03.000 --> 00:12:07.000 Otra gran ayuda que tuve en la 00:12:03.000 --> 00:12:07.000 universidad fue mi hermana Susana, 00:12:07.000 --> 00:12:10.000 quien tambien se esta 00:12:07.000 --> 00:12:10.000 graduando hoy con nosotros. 00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:14.000 El tener a mi hermana en esta 00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:14.000 experiencia de nuestras vidas 00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:18.000 ha hecho una gran diferencia 00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:18.000 porque me apoyo con mis estudios. 00:12:18.000 --> 00:12:25.000 Mi hermana, mis padres, Jesus y Erendira, 00:12:18.000 --> 00:12:25.000 mi hermano Alexander, mis amigos cercanos, 00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:29.000 y hasta mi perro Sparky formaron 00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:29.000 parte de este gran y largo camino. 00:12:29.000 --> 00:12:31.000 Quien te apoyo a ti? 00:12:31.000 --> 00:12:34.000 Toma unos momentos para 00:12:31.000 --> 00:12:34.000 pensar en esas personas que 00:12:34.000 --> 00:12:38.000 con su apoyo incondicional, 00:12:34.000 --> 00:12:38.000 hicieron que hoy te graduaras. 00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:42.000 Me gusta pensar que nuestra 00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:42.000 universidad, siendo tan peque'ita, 00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:44.000 puede ofrecer grandes oportunidades. 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:48.000 Mis posiciones de liderazgo 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:48.000 en la escuela me ensenaron 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:52.000 que la representacion en las 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:52.000 posiciones de liderazgo es importante 00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:57.000 porque empodera a los estudiantes que tradicionalmente tienen baja representaci'n. 00:12:57.000 --> 00:12:61.000 para los estudiantes indocumentados 00:12:57.000 --> 00:12:61.000 El club the Unidos es un recurso 00:13:01.000 --> 00:13:05.000 y estudiantes con familias con gran 00:13:01.000 --> 00:13:05.000 variedad de estatus migratorios. 00:13:05.000 --> 00:13:12.000 En este club aprendi que, para salir adelante, 00:13:05.000 --> 00:13:12.000 la perseverancia es la cura de la incertidumbre. 00:13:12.000 --> 00:13:16.000 Sin embargo, debemos ensenarnos a acostumbrarnos a la incertidumbre; 00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:21.000 porque la verdad es que la incertidumbre 00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:21.000 esta en todos nosotros. 00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:24.000 Debemos reconocer esto 00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:24.000 especialmente en estos tiempos 00:13:24.000 --> 00:13:27.000 en los que nos enfrentamos 00:13:24.000 --> 00:13:27.000 a una pandemia global. 00:13:27.000 --> 00:13:32.000 Es la manera en que decidimos 00:13:27.000 --> 00:13:32.000 pelear contra la incertidumbre 00:13:32.000 --> 00:13:36.000 la cual nos ayuda a todos a 00:13:32.000 --> 00:13:36.000 perseverar y salir adelante. 00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:41.000 En mi caso, los sonadores han sido 00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:41.000 una inspiracion para aprender 00:13:41.000 --> 00:13:45.000 que significa salir adelante y 00:13:41.000 --> 00:13:45.000 mantenernos perseverantes: 00:13:45.000 --> 00:13:48.000 Con ello aprendiendo a permitir 00:13:45.000 --> 00:13:48.000 que la adversidad nos empodere 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:53.000 y ayude a convertirnos en personas 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:53.000 que hacen un mundo mejor 00:13:53.000 --> 00:13:55.000 para quienes pasan por lo mismo hoy. 00:13:55.000 --> 00:13:64.000 Soy una comunidad. 00:13:55.000 --> 00:13:64.000 No soy algo de lo que se deben avergonzar. 00:14:04.000 --> 00:14:09.000 Soy algo de lo que deben estar orgullosos. 00:14:04.000 --> 00:14:09.000 Mi perseverancia. Mis sacrificios. 00:14:09.000 --> 00:14:13.000 Mi habilidad de soportar una vida 00:14:09.000 --> 00:14:13.000 de incertidumbre y de dolor. 00:14:13.000 --> 00:14:18.000 De deshumanizacion: De racismo. 00:14:13.000 --> 00:14:18.000 Le agradezco a los aliados. 00:14:18.000 --> 00:14:23.000 Ellos me motivan a continuar. 00:14:18.000 --> 00:14:23.000 El movimiento me reconoce. 00:14:23.000 --> 00:14:27.000 Me humaniza. Me ve. Me valora. Esa es la luz. 00:14:27.000 --> 00:14:30.000 Esta universidad ha sido la luz 00:14:27.000 --> 00:14:30.000 para muchos so'adores. 00:14:30.000 --> 00:14:35.000 Como Alma Pacheco, a quien conoci en mi primer ano y me motivo a involucrarme. 00:14:35.000 --> 00:14:39.000 Ella era la Presidenta del Gobierno 00:14:35.000 --> 00:14:39.000 Estudiantil en la Western 00:14:39.000 --> 00:14:43.000 y me dio una tarjeta de contacto, la cual 00:14:39.000 --> 00:14:43.000 he conservado hasta el d'a de hoy. 00:14:43.000 --> 00:14:47.000 Alma me abri' los ojos y la puerta 00:14:43.000 --> 00:14:47.000 a muchas oportunidades. 00:14:47.000 --> 00:14:51.000 Por ello, sent' la obligaci'n de 00:14:47.000 --> 00:14:51.000 honrar y continuar su legado 00:14:51.000 --> 00:14:57.000 apoyando a los estudiantes tradicionalmente con escasa representacion en las instituciones. 00:14:57.000 --> 00:14:61.000 Entonces, a traves de mis posiciones 00:14:57.000 --> 00:14:61.000 de liderazgo en la escuela, 00:15:01.000 --> 00:15:05.000 decidi desarrollar un proyecto para 00:15:01.000 --> 00:15:05.000 crear un centro para Dreamers 00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:07.000 en la universidad. 00:15:07.000 --> 00:15:09.000 Cual es tu legado? 00:15:09.000 --> 00:15:12.000 Quiero que pienses en el legado 00:15:09.000 --> 00:15:12.000 que tu est's dejando hoy 00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:16.000 y en los estudiantes que continuaran 00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:16.000 el trabajo que tu has hecho. 00:15:16.000 --> 00:15:19.000 En el futuro, voy a continuar 00:15:16.000 --> 00:15:19.000 aprendiendo c'mo puedo abogar 00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:24.000 por los estudiantes con baja representaci'n 00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:24.000 en el sistema de educacion 00:15:24.000 --> 00:15:28.000 y crear leyes que apoyen a todos lo estudiantes y asegurar la equidad. 00:15:28.000 --> 00:15:34.000 en la universidad de Western Oregon! 00:15:34.000 --> 00:15:37.000 Atraves de mis experiencias, 00:15:34.000 --> 00:15:37.000 aprendi que mi comunidad, 00:15:37.000 --> 00:15:42.000 la comunidad Latinx, no esta 00:15:37.000 --> 00:15:42.000 representada en lugares importantes 00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:48.000 y me di cuenta que una ley puede tener un impacto grande en las vidas de las personas 00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:52.000 y esto es a lo que quiero dedicar mi vida: 00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:52.000 el crear acceso para las personas. 00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:56.000 Maya Angelou dijo, "Haz lo mejor 00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:56.000 que puedas hasta que sepas mas. 00:15:56.000 --> 00:15:60.000 Para cuando sepas mas, 00:15:56.000 --> 00:15:60.000 hacerlo aun mejor." 00:16:00.000 --> 00:16:05.000 Todos tenemos expectativas de nosotros y 00:16:00.000 --> 00:16:05.000 de lo que debemos hacer con nuestras vidas. 00:16:05.000 --> 00:16:10.000 Los reto a que salgan de la mentalidad que tienen que tener toda su vida planeada. 00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:13.000 En su lugar, aprende a tomar riesgos y 00:16:13.000 --> 00:16:16.000 a sentirse bien en situaciones 00:16:13.000 --> 00:16:16.000 incomodas e inciertas. 00:16:16.000 --> 00:16:19.000 Ahi es donde ocurre el desarrollo personal. 00:16:19.000 --> 00:16:22.000 Aprende a tomar saltos de fe 00:16:19.000 --> 00:16:22.000 que te lleguen m's 00:16:22.000 --> 00:16:25.000 cerca a la persona en la que te 00:16:22.000 --> 00:16:25.000 quieres convertir y a pasar tu legado 00:16:25.000 --> 00:16:28.000 a generaciones que lleguen detras de ti. 00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:32.000 Entonces, clase del 2020, cual sera tu legado? 00:16:33.000 --> 00:16:38.000 This award is truly an honor. It means the sacrifices my parents have 00:16:38.000 --> 00:16:42.000 made were worth it. This award means that with resilience, 00:16:42.000 --> 00:16:48.000 optimism and a support system, one can accomplish their goals. In college, 00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:52.000 support systems are crucial for students. Departments such as the Multicultural Student 00:16:52.000 --> 00:16:57.000 Services and Programs office and the Student Enrichment Program helped empower and 00:16:57.000 --> 00:16:62.000 guide me and many other underrepresented students to where we are today. 00:17:02.000 --> 00:17:07.000 Another support system I had throughout my time at WOU was my sister Susana, 00:17:07.000 --> 00:17:10.000 who is graduating with us today. 00:17:10.000 --> 00:17:13.000 Not many people get to experience college with their sibling, 00:17:13.000 --> 00:17:18.000 but having her support made all the difference. I could confide in her, 00:17:18.000 --> 00:17:21.000 she would bring me coffee during my evening class, 00:17:21.000 --> 00:17:24.000 and would stay up late to study with me at the library. 00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:30.000 My family, my close friends and my dog Sparky were my support system. 00:17:30.000 --> 00:17:34.000 Who was there for you? Think about the people who with small gestures and unconditional 00:17:34.000 --> 00:17:42.000 support made college possible for you. I like to think of WOU as a small school with big 00:17:42.000 --> 00:17:47.000 opportunities. My leadership roles taught me that you can help create an inclusive 00:17:47.000 --> 00:17:52.000 community. They taught me that empowering underrepresented students is important. 00:17:52.000 --> 00:17:57.000 And that representation in leadership positions is crucial because it helps empower others to 00:17:57.000 --> 00:17:64.000 step up. Unidos Club, a support system for undocumented students and students with 00:18:04.000 --> 00:18:08.000 mixed status families, taught me that resilience is a cure to uncertainty. 00:18:08.000 --> 00:18:13.000 However, we must all teach ourselves to be comfortable with the feeling of uncertainty. 00:18:13.000 --> 00:18:19.000 Because the truth is uncertainty is in ALL of us. Especially in the midst of a global pandemic. 00:18:19.000 --> 00:18:25.000 But how we choose to fight the uncomfortable feeling of uncertainty is how we become 00:18:25.000 --> 00:18:32.000 resilient. Dreamers taught me what resilience is: learning to allow adversity to empower 00:18:32.000 --> 00:18:36.000 and shape you so you can make the world a better place for people who went through the 00:18:36.000 --> 00:18:41.000 difficulties you went through. Listen to these words of a Dreamer's struggle: 00:18:46.000 --> 00:18:51.000 My resilience. My resourcefulness. My sacrifice. 00:18:51.000 --> 00:18:57.000 My courage to withstand the agony that is a life of uncertainty and pain. Of dehumanization. 00:18:57.000 --> 00:18:63.000 Of racism. I thank the allies. They keep me going. The movement recognizes me. 00:19:03.000 --> 00:19:07.000 Humanizes me. Values me. Sees me. That is the light. 00:19:07.000 --> 00:19:10.000 WOU has been the light for many Dreamers. 00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:13.000 During my first year, I met a Dreamer named Alma Pacheco. 00:19:13.000 --> 00:19:18.000 We met at the WUC and she encouraged me to get involved on campus as she handed me her 00:19:18.000 --> 00:19:20.000 ASWOU President contact card. 00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:25.000 I've kept it to this day. Alma's outstretched hand opened doors of opportunity to me. 00:19:25.000 --> 00:19:31.000 Alma's legacy was to support underrepresented students and I felt compelled 00:19:31.000 --> 00:19:36.000 to continue that legacy through my campus involvement and through my proposal for a 00:19:36.000 --> 00:19:41.000 Dream Center at WOU, which received the Maurice Undergraduate Initiative Prize. 00:19:41.000 --> 00:19:43.000 What is your legacy? 00:19:43.000 --> 00:19:47.000 I want you to think about the legacy you are leaving behind today and the students who will 00:19:47.000 --> 00:19:50.000 continue the work you have begun. 00:19:50.000 --> 00:19:55.000 As for the future, I want to continue learning how I can advocate for underrepresented 00:19:55.000 --> 00:19:61.000 students in education and I'm excited to do so as a Master's student at WOU. 00:20:01.000 --> 00:20:06.000 I want to create policies that support all students and ensure equity. 00:20:06.000 --> 00:20:11.000 Through my experiences, I've learned that my community, the Latinx community, 00:20:11.000 --> 00:20:14.000 is not represented in spaces that are crucial. 00:20:14.000 --> 00:20:18.000 I realized that one policy can have a major impact on people's lives. 00:20:18.000 --> 00:20:21.000 That is what I would like to do moving forward: 00:20:21.000 --> 00:20:27.000 create access for people. Maya Angelou said, "Do the best you can until you know better. 00:20:27.000 --> 00:20:29.000 Then when you know better, do better." 00:20:29.000 --> 00:20:33.000 We all have expectations of what we want to do with our lives. 00:20:33.000 --> 00:20:38.000 But, I challenge you to get out of the mindset that you need to have your life figured out. 00:20:38.000 --> 00:20:44.000 Instead, learn to take leaps of faith that get you closer to the person you want to become, 00:20:44.000 --> 00:20:49.000 to the legacy you want to leave behind. So, class of 2020, what will be your legacy? 00:21:03.000 --> 00:21:10.000 It is an honor to be speaking on behalf of the OHSU Monmouth Nursing Class of 2020. 00:21:10.000 --> 00:21:14.000 Graduating from OHSU's rigorous nursing program was not easy. 00:21:14.000 --> 00:21:18.000 Not to mention the fact that we are graduating virtually and unlike any other graduation in 00:21:18.000 --> 00:21:25.000 WOU or OHSU history. Like all of you, those of us in the nursing program have overcome 00:21:25.000 --> 00:21:30.000 many hurdles and obstacles and have fought long and hard to be here today. 00:21:30.000 --> 00:21:35.000 From that CPR sim that left us sore for days, to the long and overly caffeinated nights studying 00:21:35.000 --> 00:21:40.000 for exams and writing papers to quickly adapting to the sudden changes that the 00:21:40.000 --> 00:21:43.000 COVID pandemic brings. 00:21:43.000 --> 00:21:47.000 When we envisioned our senior year, I am not sure this is what we had in mind. 00:21:47.000 --> 00:21:53.000 We were excited for our newfound independence and to finally put our education 00:21:53.000 --> 00:21:55.000 into practice. 00:21:55.000 --> 00:21:59.000 We looked forward to practicum and to finally start feeling like nurses. 00:21:59.000 --> 00:21:64.000 We had all worked incredibly hard to have that clinical experience. 00:22:04.000 --> 00:22:09.000 Some days it felt like the pandemic swept our chance to further develop as nurses. 00:22:09.000 --> 00:22:14.000 Nonetheless, we adapted to the online curriculum and managed to find the positives in 00:22:14.000 --> 00:22:19.000 the wondrous and sometimes frustrating vSim's as prep for the NCLEX and experience for 00:22:19.000 --> 00:22:26.000 pediatric, and labor and delivery patients. COVID has taught me that we are resilient. 00:22:26.000 --> 00:22:29.000 We made it through nursing school, we are surviving a pandemic, 00:22:29.000 --> 00:22:32.000 and we have what it takes to become amazing nurses. 00:22:32.000 --> 00:22:36.000 I know that with our strong foundation in nursing education 00:22:36.000 --> 00:22:38.000 the rest of the hands-on skills will follow. 00:22:38.000 --> 00:22:43.000 Nursing school was the foundation of our careers, 00:22:43.000 --> 00:22:47.000 and now the real learning can begin as we take on our first nursing jobs and 00:22:47.000 --> 00:22:52.000 develop into the nurses we dreamed of becoming. 00:22:52.000 --> 00:22:57.000 When someone asks what is it like to be in nursing school and our response is that we 00:22:57.000 --> 00:22:62.000 consumed enough coffee to give a horse a myocardial infarction, but don't worry, 00:23:02.000 --> 00:23:07.000 we also learned the acronym to treat it. MONAB, if you're wondering. 00:23:07.000 --> 00:23:12.000 Oh, yes we also cried almost every term. That leaves people wondering, 00:23:12.000 --> 00:23:16.000 was nursing school worth it? And to that, the answer is YES! 00:23:16.000 --> 00:23:20.000 We spent hundreds of hours helping to provide holistic patient care. 00:23:20.000 --> 00:23:25.000 We recognize that caring for a patient and making them better is physical, mental, social, 00:23:25.000 --> 00:23:29.000 societal, economical and so much more. 00:23:29.000 --> 00:23:32.000 We may go home from a shift not sure if their health improved, 00:23:32.000 --> 00:23:36.000 but we will know that we made a difference. 00:23:36.000 --> 00:23:41.000 Nursing is about the little victories, whether titrating someone off oxygen or making 00:23:41.000 --> 00:23:47.000 someone laugh. That is what nursing is about and what makes nursing school worth it. 00:23:47.000 --> 00:23:51.000 I would like to end this speech by recognizing those who have supported us throughout this 00:23:51.000 --> 00:23:57.000 journey. It has been heartwarming to see the community pulling together to support us by 00:23:57.000 --> 00:23:62.000 sewing masks and cheering on the healthcare workers. 00:24:02.000 --> 00:24:07.000 These community actions make us excited to be joining the nursing profession. 00:24:07.000 --> 00:24:11.000 Thank you, amazing, hardworking, and talented nursing family, 00:24:11.000 --> 00:24:17.000 for supporting one another throughout the program and the pandemic. 00:24:17.000 --> 00:24:21.000 And thank you to our nursing faculty and mentors for guiding us from novices to 00:24:21.000 --> 00:24:27.000 competent nursing professionals. Finally, a huge thank you to our loved ones who 00:24:27.000 --> 00:24:31.000 supported us and endured our many episodes of crying, 00:24:31.000 --> 00:24:35.000 self-diagnosed stress overload and delirium caused by lack of sleep. 00:24:35.000 --> 00:24:41.000 On a final note, I'll leave you with a quote from Adlai Stevenson. "When you leave here today, 00:24:41.000 --> 00:24:57.000 don't forget why you came." Thank you. 00:24:57.000 --> 00:24:62.000 To my fellow Class of 2020 Graduates, friends and family, 00:25:02.000 --> 00:25:06.000 and the rest of the WOU Community, I am honored to share today with you, 00:25:06.000 --> 00:25:11.000 even if it is not in-person on a beautiful June day in Monmouth. 00:25:11.000 --> 00:25:16.000 This has not been a traditional year, and certainly not a traditional graduation. 00:25:16.000 --> 00:25:21.000 The past few months have been understandably focused on the COVID-19 00:25:21.000 --> 00:25:27.000 pandemic: the lives lost, and lives changed. People have lost their jobs, 00:25:27.000 --> 00:25:33.000 and the wisdom of social distancing for public health has also led to stress in how we as 00:25:33.000 --> 00:25:38.000 people interact and connect with those we care about. It affected today's celebration, 00:25:38.000 --> 00:25:42.000 as we are unable to participate in a traditional commencement. 00:25:42.000 --> 00:25:47.000 That might also be lucky for you, because giving this speech in-person might have led me 00:25:47.000 --> 00:25:53.000 to pass out from stage fright. 2020 might have changed things. 00:25:53.000 --> 00:25:59.000 But change does not always have to be an obstacle or continued fear that limits us. 00:25:59.000 --> 00:25:63.000 Previous generations have been looked up to by those who followed, 00:26:03.000 --> 00:26:05.000 not because of what they did when things were easy, 00:26:05.000 --> 00:26:09.000 but when terrible events tested their resolve. 00:26:09.000 --> 00:26:13.000 I have never publicly shared the following part of my life, 00:26:13.000 --> 00:26:18.000 but it seems like 2020 has put us in situations where sharing more of ourselves can 00:26:18.000 --> 00:26:25.000 help shed light on others. When I was 17, I had a severe injury to my neck and back which 00:26:25.000 --> 00:26:30.000 caused continued neurological damage and a depleted immune system that led me to slowly 00:26:30.000 --> 00:26:35.000 withdraw from people over the years. It changed me, but not for the better. 00:26:35.000 --> 00:26:41.000 It took my amazing family and doctors to help me eventually stabilize my condition, 00:26:41.000 --> 00:26:45.000 and while I will never regain my former strength and energy, 00:26:45.000 --> 00:26:47.000 I am able to have a life again with the people I love. 00:26:47.000 --> 00:26:51.000 Life did not 'return to normal', and I am thankful for that. 00:26:51.000 --> 00:26:56.000 Going through years of pain and eventual recovery led me to value 00:26:56.000 --> 00:26:59.000 things and people more. 00:26:59.000 --> 00:26:64.000 Learning how to say no means that when I say yes it is because I am invested, 00:27:04.000 --> 00:27:05.000 it matters. 00:27:05.000 --> 00:27:10.000 Not being able to rely on my body has meant that I must work harder for everything I do. 00:27:10.000 --> 00:27:14.000 But this has also meant that everything I accomplish means more to me, 00:27:14.000 --> 00:27:18.000 because it was hard. Ellen DeGeneres once said 00:27:20.000 --> 00:27:23.000 because I found what the most important thing is." 00:27:23.000 --> 00:27:27.000 The most important thing is to be true to yourself. 00:27:27.000 --> 00:27:32.000 There are times that I wonder what would have happened if some of my dreams had not ended 00:27:32.000 --> 00:27:34.000 because of my body betraying me. 00:27:34.000 --> 00:27:38.000 Those old dreams died but losing them helped me to become a better me, 00:27:38.000 --> 00:27:42.000 and to dream new dreams. 00:27:42.000 --> 00:27:49.000 Confucius said, 'Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. 00:27:49.000 --> 00:27:54.000 I got back up again, over and over, and I pushed myself to become better. 00:27:54.000 --> 00:27:58.000 I met Kelley, my amazing best friend, and married her two years ago, 00:27:58.000 --> 00:27:64.000 and we had our son Luke at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis. I went back to school. 00:28:04.000 --> 00:28:08.000 Earned my associates, my bachelor's, and now my master's degree. 00:28:08.000 --> 00:28:12.000 Each one was a battle, and each one meant more to me because of what I went through to 00:28:12.000 --> 00:28:16.000 get here. Somehow, I was selected to speak with all of you today. 00:28:16.000 --> 00:28:21.000 You have all gone through battles and overcome them. COVID-19 has changed us, 00:28:21.000 --> 00:28:27.000 and yet you are still here. You are a better "you" for going through all of this. 00:28:27.000 --> 00:28:30.000 We have lost people and dreams during this darkness, 00:28:30.000 --> 00:28:36.000 but the darkness is when your best comes out. It is not when things are easy that we have the 00:28:36.000 --> 00:28:41.000 chance to see you at your most compassionate, creative, your best self. 00:28:41.000 --> 00:28:45.000 It is when things are difficult that we need you to be your best. 00:28:45.000 --> 00:28:51.000 To the Class of 2020, and all those celebrating with us, you are resilient. 00:28:51.000 --> 00:28:57.000 I am honored to celebrate today with you as we 00:28:51.000 --> 00:28:57.000 become better versions of ourselves. 00:28:57.000 --> 00:28:63.000 And now I have the honor of welcoming WOU Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs 00:29:03.000 --> 00:29:21.000 Rob Winningham to the podium for the conferral of degrees. 00:29:21.000 --> 00:29:23.000 Thank you, Joshua. 00:29:23.000 --> 00:29:26.000 Normally at this part of the Commencement exercises, we'd begin announcing graduate 00:29:26.000 --> 00:29:31.000 names as they walk across the stage to receive their degrees. 00:29:31.000 --> 00:29:36.000 Instead, I invite you to explore the graduation cards available on this webpage. 00:29:36.000 --> 00:29:40.000 They contain personal statements and photos from all of our participants today. 00:29:40.000 --> 00:29:44.000 You can view your own cards as well as those for friends and classmates, 00:29:44.000 --> 00:29:47.000 and you may even want to view all of them. 00:29:47.000 --> 00:29:52.000 I am struck by how each graduate represents a long and life changing journey, 00:29:52.000 --> 00:29:57.000 culminating in this success that they will benefit from for the rest of their life. 00:29:57.000 --> 00:29:64.000 And, I am also struck by how that success can in turn affect future generations. 00:30:04.000 --> 00:30:09.000 I know I'll enjoy reading through each graduation card, as will President Fuller, 00:30:09.000 --> 00:30:25.000 whom I invite to take the microphone once more. 00:30:25.000 --> 00:30:29.000 Thank you Provost Winningham, and congratulations again, graduates! 00:30:29.000 --> 00:30:34.000 Your WOU degrees are one of the first stepping stones on your path to future success. 00:30:34.000 --> 00:30:39.000 Now, I think it's time we make it official - please move your tassel from the right side of your cap 00:30:39.000 --> 00:30:44.000 to the left side, symbolizing this important evolution from student to graduate. 00:30:44.000 --> 00:30:50.000 Music 00:30:50.000 --> 00:30:54.000 Though learning should be a life-long endeavor, today you have earned a break. 00:30:54.000 --> 00:30:57.000 Enjoy your celebrations with your families, friends or quarantine-mates. 00:30:57.000 --> 00:30:63.000 And remember, we are wolves.
