Together we will be your MC's for tonight. 00:00:23.000 --> 00:00:27.000 Diversity adds strength to our university. 00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:30.000 It's something that we strive for mightly. 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:36.000 We also are striving to become a Hispanic serving institution. 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:40.000 And I hope we will make progress in that regard. We're very close. 00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:43.000 We're already designated as an emerging HSI. 00:00:43.000 --> 00:00:47.000 And hopefully we'll be able to fully achieve that in the next year or so. 00:00:47.000 --> 00:00:52.000 This is really important that we recognize you in this event. 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:54.000 And I know some of you came last year 00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:58.000 and I'm sorry we weren't able to host a dinner in your honor. 00:00:58.000 --> 00:00:60.000 But I'm glad you're here this year. 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:04.000 The other thing I wanted you to know is thanks to the work of 00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:11.000 some of our great students, Blanca and Mekena, Makana - pardon me 00:01:11.000 --> 00:01:15.000 and Arlette and other members, Devon and others, 00:01:15.000 --> 00:01:19.000 we now have a Freedom Center on the 2nd floor of this building. 00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:12.000 Although public speaking is one of the few things that brings my anxiety through the roof, 00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:15.000 I accepted this invitation. 00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:20.000 I accepted the invitation because I know this is a way to give back to the WOU community 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:24.000 and to my fellow diversity scholars. 00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:27.000 I also know that I have faced many challenges in my 00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:31.000 education and life to be where I'm at today. 00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:35.000 And for that I believe my story deserves to be heard. 00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:39.000 And one day, yours will also be heard. 00:02:39.000 --> 00:02:43.000 If I had to give you one advice, I would advise this... 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:47.000 do not hold back. 00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:52.000 Do not hold back for anyone or anything. 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:54.000 Live the present moment. 00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:58.000 Live those life experiences that come your way. 00:02:58.000 --> 00:02:62.000 Take on those experiences and opportunities in life 00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:05.000 that will later define who you will become as a parent... 00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:08.000 as an adult, sorry I'm a parent, too. 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:12.000 Lastly, I want to congratulate you all for your accomplishments 00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:16.000 and for having chosen WOU to be the university 00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:19.000 that will allow you to further your education 00:03:19.000 --> 00:03:22.000 and become that professional you all inspire to be. 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:26.000 S' se puede. 00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:31.000 Respect, attentiveness and humility. 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:36.000 These were the important values my father instilled in me before I left Mexico. 00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:40.000 These are the same values that have allowed me to meet and engage with others. 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:44.000 I am now 19-years-old and I am grateful to say that because of the help, 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:48.000 guidance and support from other teachers, mentors and those who have believed in me, 00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:53.000 I have developed the necessary skills to serve as an influential leader in my community. 00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:56.000 Now, as a college student, I plan to continue 00:03:56.000 --> 00:03:60.000 my dream career as a bi-lingual clinical psychologist 00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:04.000 in order to reserve my, in order serve and aid 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:08.000 the diverse community from which we are part of. 00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:12.000 Diversity is about exploring and understanding our diffferences 00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:15.000 while celebrating the rich cultures of each individual. 00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:19.000 We are diversity.
