WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:05.000 My name is Greg Garcia Jr. I majored in history at Western Oregon University. 00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:10.000 After World War II...the thing that drew me into history are the stories of empowerment. 00:00:10.000 --> 00:00:15.000 And how people can come from nowhere to accomplish great things. 00:00:15.000 --> 00:00:20.000 How, in the case of my grandfather, the son of Spanish immigrants in Hawaii 00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:26.000 could rise and help become one of the people who made our 50th state possible. 00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:29.000 Today I'm a social studies teacher at Franklin High School in the Portland 00:00:29.000 --> 00:00:33.000 public school district. I teach AP History and AP Psychology. 00:00:33.000 --> 00:00:38.000 Folks, if you're able to remember this on the big test that makes it all worth it. So yes. 00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:42.000 Today we were playing a review game for an AP U.S. History test. 00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:46.000 Definitely, the competition of the game really gets the kids involved. 00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:52.000 What excites me about history as a teacher is the ability for those stories to be told 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:56.000 And the ownership that my students have in telling those stories. 00:00:56.000 --> 00:00:59.000 My favorite part of the job is the public history project I do with my students 00:00:59.000 --> 00:00:63.000 at the end of the year where they actually work with museums across 00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:08.000 the Pacific Northwest. Take the stories that they've developed and 00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:12.000 make them accessible to the public. My students have interviewed 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:16.000 sports figures, local business members and even movie stars. 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:20.000 I absolutely would recommend Western to future students, prospective students, 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:24.000 high school graduates. The personal touch is really a major selling point. 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:28.000 The relationships that you build. As a matter of fact, my wife 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:32.000 was the first person I ever met at Western and she is also a Western graduate. 00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:36.000 I was recently honored by being named Oregon History Teacher of the Year. 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:42.000 I honestly think I was selected for that because of the services I give the community. 00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:47.000 We are able to have students chronicle the stories of their local communities. 00:01:47.000 --> 00:01:50.000 We've have students interview members of their immigrant community 00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:52.000 and they literally make history. 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:56.000 They go out and they tell stories that are preserved for posterity 00:01:56.000 --> 00:01:58.000 that you can't find in a textbook. 00:01:58.000 --> 00:01:65.000 Music
