WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.000 My name is Nicole Niskanen. 00:00:02.000 --> 00:00:06.000 I majored in Earth and Environmental Science at Western Oregon University. 00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:08.000 Today, my colleague and I, are working on a 00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:10.000 stream erosion project for a homeowner in Portland. 00:00:10.000 --> 00:00:16.000 This consists of PcP information which we use for soil strength data, 00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:20.000 taking a hand auger down, and these are pretty deep explorations. 00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:24.000 So we're going 18, attempting to go 18', below ground surface. 00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:28.000 I wanted to become a geologist because I had an experience in high school 00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:31.000 where I was the only female who got accepted into this internship, 00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:36.000 college internship. Since then I decided I wanted to be the first female 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:39.000 in my family to pursue a 4-year degree. 00:00:39.000 --> 00:00:42.000 My favorite part of the job is that 00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:44.000 I have no idea what I'm getting into everyday. 00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:48.000 For example, today, we were expecting it would be fine grained alluvial deposits. 00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:51.000 And there's new challenges and difficulties every time. 00:00:51.000 --> 00:00:55.000 It's also so cool, the sceneries, the wildlife. 00:00:55.000 --> 00:00:60.000 Everything that I see and encounter. It's just, it's sites like this are beautiful. 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:05.000 I definitely attribute my job success to the connections I made at Western. 00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:10.000 Without Dr. Taylor, Keystone or Templeton, 00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:12.000 there's no way I would be where I'm at. 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:14.000 They got me through everything. 00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:17.000 They set-up job connections. 00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:21.000 The program at Western is designed to set you for success. 00:01:21.000 --> 00:01:24.000 I just recently passed my GIT. 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:27.000 And because of the connections with my current employer, 00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:31.000 there's 3 Western Oregon graduates from the same department 00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:36.000 because they work so hard to promote student success. 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:40.000 I think what makes Western special is the student-professor relationships. 00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:42.000 The professors really care about the students 00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:45.000 and want to see them be successful in life. 00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:49.000 music
