WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.000 Well, today we're here at the Heritage Museum in Independence, Oregon. 00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:06.000 And we're talking about osprey, a bird of prey. 00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:09.000 This bird is a raptor like the osprey. 00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:12.000 And her name is Ginger. She's optomoto falcon. 00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:17.000 And she was born in captivity and she came to us originally for falconry, 00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:21.000 for hunting with birds of prey, but now she's also an avian ambassador. 00:00:23.000 --> 00:00:27.000 I think it's important for young people to realize that our raptors at one time were 00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:30.000 in serious trouble. A lot of them were near extinction. 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:34.000 And we got together as a government and a people and protected them. 00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:38.000 And they've come back. And now we live in an environment where they're very common. 00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:42.000 It's nice to see osprey flying overhead and bald eagles and red-tailed hawks, 00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:46.000 and all the other raptors that we have here. And that's evidence that if we work together, 00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:48.000 we can solve our environmental problems. 00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:53.000 So that's a positive story that we want to tell with this exhibit, too. 00:00:53.000 --> 00:00:57.000 My goal in creating this exhibit was to share a topic with our community 00:00:57.000 --> 00:00:60.000 that we're familiar with but maybe don't know the details about. 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:05.000 The benefit of partnering with Western Oregon University & Professor Dawson is for 00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:10.000 us to be completely accurate and competent in the information that we're sharing. 00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:13.000 So we worked with a local artist to create the comic strip. 00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:18.000 We worked with a community consortium services to create the 3D printed 00:01:18.000 --> 00:01:22.000 skull and talons that we have. Professor Dawson helped us build the nest, 00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:25.000 to make sure that it looks accurate. 00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:30.000 And we even have a button that you can push so you can actually hear 00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:34.000 what an osprey sounds like. (Osprey voices) 00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:37.000 The Nesting With Osprey exhibit has been extended through May. 00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:40.000 Our museum is always free and we hope that you'll come visit. 00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:42.000 And bring some visitors with you! 00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:47.000 music
