WEBVTT 00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:09.000 Hi everyone. Welcome to our conference session. 00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:12.000 We're really excited to be here. 00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:17.000 We're really honored that you decided to 00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:19.000 share your time with us, 00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:22.000 especially after that really amazing 00:00:23.000 --> 00:00:27.000 lunch we had and inspiring morning. 00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:30.000 My name is Lisa AbuAssaly George, 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:32.000 and I'm here with my colleague 00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:34.000 from Columbia Gorge Community College, 00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:38.000 Sara Mustonen, and we'll just give a couple of intros. 00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:42.000 I'm the Director of Diversity, 00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:45.000 Equity, and Inclusion at CGCC. 00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:50.000 I'm in the inaugural role there after serving in 00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:52.000 the inaugural role as 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:54.000 Multicultural Student Success Coordinator 00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:56.000 at Mount Hood Community College. 00:00:56.000 --> 00:00:59.000 I think I might be making a name for 00:00:59.000 --> 00:00:62.000 myself as the inaugural role person, 00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:06.000 aka the kicking-in-the-doors person. 00:01:07.000 --> 00:01:11.000 I'm Arab-American with a Latina grandmother. 00:01:11.000 --> 00:01:16.000 I am a grandmother myself. 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:18.000 I'm an avid cyclist. 00:01:18.000 --> 00:01:20.000 I think that there might be another 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:22.000 one of us in the audience, two or more. 00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:26.000 That's cool. Three, excellent. 00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:29.000 Bilingual, trilingual-ish, 00:01:29.000 --> 00:01:32.000 and in my other life, 00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:36.000 I teach sociology and education classes at Portland Community College. 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:39.000 Here's my colleague, Sara. 00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:44.000 need to stop that one. 00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:46.000 is Sara Mustonen. 00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:49.000 I'm the Director of Advising and 00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:51.000 also the Title III grant 00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:55.000 at Columbia College Community College. I grew up in Portland, Oregon, 00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:57.000 graduated from Grant High School, 00:01:57.000 --> 00:01:60.000 and have lived primarily on the West Coast. 00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:05.000 My primary parent did not attend college, 00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:13.000 and so I feel very much first-generation college student. 00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:17.000 We're just very happy to be here today and to be 00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:22.000 sharing Columbia Gorge's experiences as 00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:26.000 we move into hopefully embracing all 00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:28.000 of the things that are really important 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:32.000 with being a Hispanic-serving institution. 00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:38.000 turn, you all's turn. 00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:40.000 One of the most important ways 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:43.000 we can do our work is by building networks, 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:45.000 building capacity, getting to know each other, 00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:47.000 and building our power. 00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:50.000 We also know that this work 00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:53.000 empowering students and communities 00:02:53.000 --> 00:02:58.000 and kicking down the doors can be tiring and isolating. 00:02:58.000 --> 00:02:61.000 This is your chance to 00:03:01.000 --> 00:03:03.000 say hello to someone, introduce yourself, 00:03:03.000 --> 00:03:06.000 and share something that inspires you, 00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:09.000 that keeps you going, a way that you care for yourself. 00:03:09.000 --> 00:03:14.000 Maybe it's cycling 200 miles in a day, but maybe not. 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:17.000 Just take a minute, introduce yourself to someone, 00:03:17.000 --> 00:03:21.000 and let's start to build a little more capacity here in this room. 00:03:21.000 --> 00:03:25.000 We'll be back in about 3-5 minutes. 00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:29.000 We're going to tell you a little bit about 00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:31.000 the history of Columbia Gorge Community College. 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:33.000 It is part of 00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:35.000 our trajectory through the next hour 00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:37.000 to go over our history, 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:39.000 then what we're doing currently 00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:41.000 and our plans for the future. 00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:44.000 Here's some language from our website. 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:47.000 Actually, it might be from Wikipedia. 00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:54.000 CGCC started in 1977 00:03:54.000 --> 00:03:59.000 as a satellite campus of Portland Community College. 00:03:59.000 --> 00:03:64.000 We were tightly affiliated and accredited through PCC. 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:09.000 Then in 1989, we named 00:04:09.000 --> 00:04:14.000 ourselves CGCC and we are located in the Dales, 00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:20.000 Oregon with a satellite center or a campus, 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:23.000 it's not supposed to be called a campus, but a lot of people call it a campus, 00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:25.000 in Hood River, Oregon. 00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:31.000 In 2013, we got independent accreditation. 00:04:31.000 --> 00:04:36.000 The Dales campus is located in Wasco County, 00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:42.000 which was originally the largest-ever territorial designation in the US. 00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:46.000 Wasco County was organized in 1854. 00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:48.000 Here's a picture. 00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:52.000 On your right you'll see Wasco County now, 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:57.000 and on the left is how Wasco County started out. 00:04:57.000 --> 00:04:59.000 Really interesting. 00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:04.000 I just want to leave this up here and let it sink. 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:07.000 Wasco County and really all 00:05:07.000 --> 00:05:11.000 of what many people call Northern Oregon now 00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:15.000 was solidly established in the way we 00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:19.000 experienced it now as headquarters, 00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:23.000 mission central for colonization, 00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:26.000 and genocidal land grabs. There's no question about that. 00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:29.000 That's why Wasco County was so big. 00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:34.000 Here's some more language about CGCC. 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:38.000 We talked a lot about how representation matters. 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:42.000 This is how CGCC was originally marketed. 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:46.000 If you look at these pictures really closely, 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:49.000 which I think you should be able to because of the size, 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:52.000 you'll see that all of 00:05:52.000 --> 00:05:56.000 these faces are very light-skinned faces. 00:05:56.000 --> 00:05:58.000 These are all very white faces, 00:05:58.000 --> 00:05:63.000 in perpetuation of the original mission of Wasco County. 00:06:03.000 --> 00:06:06.000 What we know about higher ed, 00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:09.000 the way it was designed and the way it was introduced into 00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:16.000 US culture is a tool to perpetuate privilege, 00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:21.000 a tool for the elite to maintain elite status. 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:24.000 We can understand that that is really 00:06:24.000 --> 00:06:28.000 represented in these old posters from CGCC. 00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:31.000 Like I said before, I'm in 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:36.000 the inaugural role as the Director of DEI at the college. 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:40.000 I started in mid-December at the end of fall term, 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:43.000 so I've been there for about a quarter. 00:06:43.000 --> 00:06:45.000 When I started there, 00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:49.000 this was hanging on the wall outside my office, 00:06:49.000 --> 00:06:51.000 language from the colonizers. 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:54.000 It may not be there 00:06:54.000 --> 00:06:60.000 anymore and not everybody knows where it is anymore. 00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:04.000 Sometimes when we talk about kicking in those doors, 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:09.000 we really are doing that in making changes 00:07:09.000 --> 00:07:12.000 that had not occurred to 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:14.000 people from within the institution 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:16.000 for a really long time. 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:20.000 Here's some more language about the college. 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:24.000 We are in what many people consider to be one 00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:30.000 of the most beautiful places on the planet. 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:33.000 If you have not been through the Gorge recently, 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:36.000 go to the Gorge and experience it. 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:39.000 Ride a bike, take a hike, 00:07:39.000 --> 00:07:42.000 drive through, just sit there, 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:44.000 and breathe the air by the river. 00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:50.000 It's inspiring and it's really wonderful for education. 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:53.000 We serve many counties, 00:07:53.000 --> 00:07:55.000 not just Wasco and Hood River counties, 00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:58.000 and not just counties in Oregon but 00:07:58.000 --> 00:07:61.000 we also serve counties in Washington, 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:05.000 which is really important to keep in mind. 00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:08.000 Next slide, please. 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:14.000 CGCC got its HSI designation in 2016. 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:17.000 The way the story goes, the way it was related to me, 00:08:17.000 --> 00:08:20.000 was that in about 2014 or 2015, 00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:22.000 folks said, why don't we 00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:26.000 become a Hispanic-serving institution? 00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:29.000 Everybody said, okay, let's do it. 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:32.000 It's going to take a while. 00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:36.000 Then we recruited in the high schools and, boom, 00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:40.000 the next year within 12 months we were an HSI 00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:45.000 because the population was already there. 00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:48.000 It just was not attending the college. 00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:51.000 It happened really fast. 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:55.000 The demographics of Hood River 00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:57.000 and the Dales are different, 00:08:57.000 --> 00:08:59.000 and the demographics of who 00:08:59.000 --> 00:08:63.000 each campus serves is different. 00:09:03.000 --> 00:09:05.000 Here on this slide is 00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:09.000 a representation of the population of Hood River, 00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:11.000 the city, and the Dales, the city. 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:14.000 You can see that in Hood River City, 00:09:14.000 --> 00:09:20.000 it's 25.5%, and in the Dales, it's 19.0%. 00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:29.000 of that same demographic is 35%. 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:33.000 As you can see, Hispanic Latino students are 00:09:33.000 --> 00:09:35.000 over-represented at the college in 00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:38.000 proportion to how folks 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:41.000 show up in the community in the census. 00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:43.000 All of this with a caveat, 00:09:43.000 --> 00:09:47.000 that we're looking at census data, 00:09:47.000 --> 00:09:49.000 which is not necessarily truly 00:09:49.000 --> 00:09:53.000 representative of who's in the community. 00:09:53.000 --> 00:09:57.000 Let me ask you all a question. 00:09:57.000 --> 00:09:59.000 Feel free to shout it out, 00:09:59.000 --> 00:09:61.000 I'll repeat your answer into the mic. 00:10:01.000 --> 00:10:04.000 What's missing on this chart? 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:08.000 There's, according to the census, 00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:13.000 White alone, Black or African-American alone, 00:10:13.000 --> 00:10:18.000 American-Indian, Alaska-Native alone, Asian alone, 00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:21.000 Native Hawaiian alone, two or more races, 00:10:21.000 --> 00:10:25.000 Hispanic or Latino, White alone, not Hispanic or Latino. 00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:28.000 What's missing? What would you like to see on this? 00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:30.000 What do you want the census to look for? 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:35.000 Rebecca says North African and Middle Eastern. 00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:41.000 We tried to get that census designation through for 2020. 00:10:41.000 --> 00:10:43.000 The acronym is MENA, 00:10:43.000 --> 00:10:45.000 Middle Eastern, Northern African. 00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:48.000 It was all ready to go, it was tested, 00:10:48.000 --> 00:10:52.000 the former president stopped it from 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:56.000 going through right at the very end. 00:10:56.000 --> 00:10:60.000 demographics of the region, 00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:02.000 there's also groups that are not 00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:06.000 represented here with accuracy as well. 00:11:06.000 --> 00:11:09.000 We have a growing Native American group, 00:11:09.000 --> 00:11:14.000 and we are noticing that they are not represented in 00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:17.000 our own internal data 00:11:17.000 --> 00:11:20.000 as reflected as what we see in our student population, 00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:23.000 and in the census data as well. 00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:25.000 As an HSI, it's really important 00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:28.000 that we are looking at all minoritized groups, 00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:31.000 and so it's important that we start to capture 00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:35.000 these data with higher accuracy and efficacy. 00:11:35.000 --> 00:11:39.000 We also get to highlight our president, Dr. Cronin. 00:11:39.000 --> 00:11:42.000 She has been with us for four years. 00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:44.000 She is moving on in June, 00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:47.000 but she is the first Latino president 00:11:47.000 --> 00:11:49.000 in Community College in Oregon. 00:11:49.000 --> 00:11:52.000 this state, I know. 00:11:52.000 --> 00:11:57.000 definitely is going to have 00:11:57.000 --> 00:11:61.000 a wonderful experience on the East Coast and they are very fortunate to have her. 00:12:01.000 --> 00:12:04.000 Enrollment data. 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:09.000 This data represents what we have experienced at 00:12:09.000 --> 00:12:15.000 our college for a delayed dip in enrollment. 00:12:15.000 --> 00:12:20.000 Some colleges, I had heard correlation only to that 00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:22.000 some HSIs are experiencing 00:12:22.000 --> 00:12:26.000 this delayed dip related to the COVID pandemic. 00:12:26.000 --> 00:12:31.000 Our current headcount enrollment dropped to 487, 00:12:31.000 --> 00:12:35.000 and our FTE is remaining fairly stable based on, 00:12:35.000 --> 00:12:38.000 we have increased our high school enrollment 00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:41.000 over the past year or so, 00:12:41.000 --> 00:12:44.000 and it is increasing pretty dramatically this academic year. 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:47.000 These are good things, 00:12:47.000 --> 00:12:52.000 but then it also diminishes that concern that we may have 00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:57.000 for our one-year certificate or two-year completer rate. 00:12:57.000 --> 00:12:60.000 Because when we are looking at FTE flat, 00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:04.000 we can't always see where those targets are, 00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:08.000 and where we are potentially needing to address 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:13.000 some very important things with our completion rates. 00:13:13.000 --> 00:13:15.000 FTE remain fairly stable, 00:13:15.000 --> 00:13:21.000 and so you can see there are 245, not bad. 00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:23.000 We do get this information a little bit late, 00:13:23.000 --> 00:13:29.000 and we will be seeing it reflected in the iPads data. 00:13:30.000 --> 00:13:36.000 Here's our internal data for last year. 00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:39.000 That 30% Hispanic. 00:13:39.000 --> 00:13:43.000 You will often see, 00:13:43.000 --> 00:13:45.000 when we look at different data sources, 00:13:45.000 --> 00:13:47.000 how we capture the time that we capture. 00:13:47.000 --> 00:13:50.000 Sometimes it's a little bit different here and there, 00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:54.000 so we are looking at 35% right now Hispanic students, 00:13:54.000 --> 00:13:57.000 hence Hispanic student enrollment. 00:13:59.000 --> 00:13:61.000 that we're going to whip through to tell you 00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:03.000 about what we are doing currently at 00:14:03.000 --> 00:14:08.000 CGCC to meet the idea 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:12.000 of serving that word where it occurs in 00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:18.000 HSI are serving this as a Hispanic serving institution. 00:14:18.000 --> 00:14:20.000 First of all, we're doing 00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:23.000 curriculum development in Spanish, 00:14:23.000 --> 00:14:27.000 and currently we have instructors 00:14:27.000 --> 00:14:31.000 that accept assignments in Spanish. 00:14:31.000 --> 00:14:34.000 This is a really great, we're hearing from our students that 00:14:34.000 --> 00:14:37.000 they really dig that. 00:14:37.000 --> 00:14:43.000 Also, some of you in this room might be a part 00:14:43.000 --> 00:14:48.000 of our Latinx Advisory Committee we have at CGCC. 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:51.000 We're really happy that we have folks 00:14:51.000 --> 00:14:53.000 advising our trajectory as 00:14:53.000 --> 00:14:56.000 an institution from across the region, 00:14:56.000 --> 00:14:59.000 across the river, even telling us what 00:14:59.000 --> 00:14:63.000 they think is important and how we should proceed. 00:15:03.000 --> 00:15:05.000 When I inherited it, 00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:08.000 it had really slowed down, probably because of the pandemic, 00:15:08.000 --> 00:15:10.000 but folks are really excited 00:15:10.000 --> 00:15:13.000 to start telling us what to do. 00:15:13.000 --> 00:15:18.000 three SIP Grant. 00:15:18.000 --> 00:15:22.000 We are in Year 2 of being a recipient of this grant, 00:15:22.000 --> 00:15:25.000 the strengthening institutions programs 00:15:25.000 --> 00:15:27.000 through the Department of Ed. 00:15:27.000 --> 00:15:32.000 This grant it will expand for five years. 00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:37.000 There are pretty fantastic things that we are able to 00:15:37.000 --> 00:15:40.000 leverage our resources on 00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:43.000 the campus and then continue to build. 00:15:43.000 --> 00:15:45.000 As it says in the title, 00:15:45.000 --> 00:15:47.000 the main focus for 00:15:47.000 --> 00:15:49.000 the strengthening institutions is to 00:15:49.000 --> 00:15:52.000 make something that's long-lasting. 00:15:53.000 --> 00:15:58.000 Primarily the funding goes to staffing, 00:15:58.000 --> 00:15:62.000 so it funds the director position in addition to 00:16:02.000 --> 00:16:06.000 two bilingual bicultural staff that 00:16:06.000 --> 00:16:10.000 are very important staff for front facing with students. 00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:12.000 We have a bilingual tutoring 00:16:12.000 --> 00:16:15.000 and mentoring services coordinator. 00:16:15.000 --> 00:16:18.000 That person will fill all 00:16:18.000 --> 00:16:21.000 of the requests for tutoring and connect students 00:16:21.000 --> 00:16:24.000 directly to tutoring resources or help 00:16:24.000 --> 00:16:26.000 them connect with their instructors 00:16:26.000 --> 00:16:28.000 and get the support that they need. 00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:33.000 We were able to also make a space in our library learning 00:16:33.000 --> 00:16:37.000 comments refresher space to 00:16:37.000 --> 00:16:41.000 have intentionality for tutoring specifically. 00:16:41.000 --> 00:16:44.000 That has been a really nice thing to have 00:16:44.000 --> 00:16:48.000 a nice campus space for people to access tutoring. 00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:50.000 Our other position is 00:16:50.000 --> 00:16:54.000 a bilingual students success coach 00:16:54.000 --> 00:16:56.000 or students success navigator, 00:16:56.000 --> 00:16:59.000 and that person is also 00:16:59.000 --> 00:16:61.000 very connected with students and works with 00:17:01.000 --> 00:17:05.000 our students who may 00:17:05.000 --> 00:17:07.000 be needing extra supports in 00:17:07.000 --> 00:17:10.000 addition to our SAP student group. 00:17:10.000 --> 00:17:15.000 We will be adding a technology coordinator position. 00:17:15.000 --> 00:17:17.000 Then we're also exploring 00:17:17.000 --> 00:17:23.000 some other options for managing equity and aid. 00:17:23.000 --> 00:17:26.000 Managing how we provide 00:17:26.000 --> 00:17:29.000 financial resources to our students, 00:17:29.000 --> 00:17:32.000 and how we can equitably serve our students. 00:17:32.000 --> 00:17:34.000 The mission for our Title III Grant 00:17:34.000 --> 00:17:37.000 is equitable access to 00:17:37.000 --> 00:17:39.000 education and then equitable 00:17:39.000 --> 00:17:42.000 attainments or actual achievement as well. 00:17:45.000 --> 00:17:51.000 another program we're bringing online, LSAMP. 00:17:51.000 --> 00:17:55.000 Raise your hand if you know what that stands for. 00:17:55.000 --> 00:17:58.000 LSAMP is the Louis Stokes Alliance 00:17:58.000 --> 00:17:62.000 for Minority Participation in STEM. 00:18:02.000 --> 00:18:06.000 It is a granting and funding opportunity 00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:08.000 for four year students in STEM. 00:18:08.000 --> 00:18:11.000 But also it provides 00:18:11.000 --> 00:18:14.000 a wrap-around support for STEM students. 00:18:14.000 --> 00:18:17.000 We're bringing this partnership to CGCC, 00:18:17.000 --> 00:18:23.000 so it will help our CGCC STEM students transfer 00:18:23.000 --> 00:18:30.000 to institutions like PSU, OSU. 00:18:30.000 --> 00:18:36.000 I think we might not have LSAMP, no, it doesn't. 00:18:36.000 --> 00:18:39.000 It's a really good program, let's talk. 00:18:40.000 --> 00:18:44.000 we're launching 00:18:44.000 --> 00:18:46.000 a mini cohort of 00:18:46.000 --> 00:18:49.000 high school students, mostly high-school seniors. 00:18:49.000 --> 00:18:52.000 There are two main high schools in 00:18:52.000 --> 00:18:54.000 the area that Dow's used to have matter, 00:18:54.000 --> 00:18:58.000 but does not anymore. It was rolled into a program called juntos. 00:18:58.000 --> 00:18:63.000 Those students will be coming up to the college with 00:19:03.000 --> 00:19:07.000 Hood River students in MEChA and we're hoping to 00:19:07.000 --> 00:19:11.000 build this cohort across the two cities, 00:19:11.000 --> 00:19:15.000 across the region that the river serves so 00:19:15.000 --> 00:19:18.000 that we know if many of 00:19:18.000 --> 00:19:20.000 those students end up going 00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:22.000 right straight to a four-year, 00:19:22.000 --> 00:19:26.000 will still have some capacity and the students who join 00:19:26.000 --> 00:19:29.000 CGCC will have all the benefits 00:19:29.000 --> 00:19:32.000 of a robust cohort with wrap-around support. 00:19:32.000 --> 00:19:35.000 Also allow me to plug 00:19:35.000 --> 00:19:38.000 the free clinic that we're holding next week on May 4th at 00:19:38.000 --> 00:19:44.000 Hood River Campus on May 00:19:44.000 --> 00:19:50.000 which will also provide a free paperwork support, 00:19:50.000 --> 00:19:53.000 immigration counseling, and also 00:19:53.000 --> 00:19:55.000 provide people with the funds to 00:19:55.000 --> 00:19:58.000 file those paperwork items. 00:19:58.000 --> 00:19:61.000 This is a popup, but we're exploring standing up 00:20:01.000 --> 00:20:05.000 a permanent clinic that will live in the Dow's. 00:20:09.000 --> 00:20:11.000 you always want to have some programming 00:20:11.000 --> 00:20:13.000 connected to staffing. 00:20:13.000 --> 00:20:15.000 We have program of PASS. 00:20:15.000 --> 00:20:20.000 PASS has been our early alert system for a long time. 00:20:20.000 --> 00:20:23.000 It's a homegrown early alert system. 00:20:23.000 --> 00:20:29.000 It had a back-end computer interface 00:20:29.000 --> 00:20:31.000 that now we've eliminated succumb into 00:20:31.000 --> 00:20:34.000 just a easy to use Google Forms. 00:20:34.000 --> 00:20:36.000 The reason why we did that was because we 00:20:36.000 --> 00:20:38.000 wanted students to be able to self 00:20:38.000 --> 00:20:41.000 refer themselves for promoting 00:20:41.000 --> 00:20:43.000 access to students success. 00:20:43.000 --> 00:20:51.000 This PASS program serves for both groups. 00:20:51.000 --> 00:20:55.000 Students can self initiate when they're 00:20:55.000 --> 00:20:59.000 feeling like they need connection to support services, 00:20:59.000 --> 00:20:66.000 advising, tutoring, other types of programs like step. 00:21:06.000 --> 00:21:09.000 Then teachers and instructors and 00:21:09.000 --> 00:21:12.000 staff and faculty everyone has access 00:21:12.000 --> 00:21:15.000 through our main website to be able to assist 00:21:15.000 --> 00:21:17.000 students in this way by referring students. 00:21:17.000 --> 00:21:19.000 They will then connect with a staff member. 00:21:19.000 --> 00:21:21.000 The staff member will keep 00:21:21.000 --> 00:21:24.000 ongoing communication with the person who is referred. 00:21:24.000 --> 00:21:28.000 Then we just do our best with that early alert system to 00:21:28.000 --> 00:21:30.000 connect students to resources to be 00:21:30.000 --> 00:21:32.000 successful. This one's fun. 00:21:32.000 --> 00:21:35.000 We've had some focus groups talking 00:21:35.000 --> 00:21:38.000 about bilingual signage and wayfinding. 00:21:38.000 --> 00:21:41.000 Our campus is a beautiful campus, 00:21:41.000 --> 00:21:49.000 and it really does lack a system for wayfinding and 00:21:49.000 --> 00:21:53.000 it just seems to be a good fit now to make 00:21:53.000 --> 00:21:56.000 the signage bilingual because 00:21:56.000 --> 00:21:58.000 it helps with a welcoming feel. 00:21:58.000 --> 00:21:61.000 This is part of our infrastructure 00:22:01.000 --> 00:22:04.000 rebuilding so we are utilizing our hedge funds from 00:22:04.000 --> 00:22:06.000 the CBL grant in addition to 00:22:08.000 --> 00:22:10.000 on to hopefully have 00:22:10.000 --> 00:22:12.000 really nice signage throughout 00:22:12.000 --> 00:22:14.000 our campus to help people find their way. 00:22:17.000 --> 00:22:21.000 Much of our change is driven by students. 00:22:21.000 --> 00:22:25.000 When I arrived on campus last December, 00:22:25.000 --> 00:22:28.000 one of the most powerful groups causing 00:22:28.000 --> 00:22:33.000 social change at the campus was the Equal Club. 00:22:33.000 --> 00:22:35.000 The Equal Club decided that 00:22:35.000 --> 00:22:38.000 one of the projects they wanted to work on 00:22:38.000 --> 00:22:43.000 this spring was surveying students about how they 00:22:43.000 --> 00:22:49.000 felt the serving part of HSI was coming through. 00:22:49.000 --> 00:22:51.000 We'll be doing that. 00:22:51.000 --> 00:22:53.000 I think they're going to deploy it in 00:22:53.000 --> 00:22:55.000 the next week or two actually. 00:22:55.000 --> 00:22:59.000 In addition to that data gathering, 00:22:59.000 --> 00:22:63.000 we currently have deployed a faculty DEI 00:23:03.000 --> 00:23:07.000 needs assessment that is nationwide. 00:23:07.000 --> 00:23:11.000 It's deployed across colleges and 00:23:11.000 --> 00:23:14.000 universities all over the place 00:23:14.000 --> 00:23:16.000 asking faculty what they need, 00:23:16.000 --> 00:23:19.000 how comfortable they are talking about 00:23:19.000 --> 00:23:22.000 cultural issues and equity in the classroom, 00:23:22.000 --> 00:23:24.000 and what support they need. 00:23:24.000 --> 00:23:26.000 In addition, since I've been there, 00:23:26.000 --> 00:23:29.000 we've been really offering 00:23:29.000 --> 00:23:32.000 so many teaching workshops on 00:23:32.000 --> 00:23:34.000 culturally responsive and 00:23:34.000 --> 00:23:37.000 anti-racist pedagogy and teaching. 00:23:37.000 --> 00:23:39.000 We're really happy about that. 00:23:39.000 --> 00:23:43.000 In addition to that data gathering, 00:23:43.000 --> 00:23:46.000 this spring, we're doing 00:23:46.000 --> 00:23:49.000 just the generic community college survey 00:23:49.000 --> 00:23:51.000 of student engagement. 00:23:51.000 --> 00:23:54.000 Some of you may have heard it called the CSSE, 00:23:54.000 --> 00:23:58.000 but this ball will be deploying the head survey 00:23:58.000 --> 00:23:63.000 on diversity and equity across the whole campus. 00:24:03.000 --> 00:24:05.000 Doing a campus climate survey 00:24:05.000 --> 00:24:07.000 so that we'll know exactly what we need 00:24:07.000 --> 00:24:10.000 to do from the people on campus not just students, 00:24:10.000 --> 00:24:13.000 not just teachers, but staff. 00:24:13.000 --> 00:24:16.000 How they experience their feeling of 00:24:16.000 --> 00:24:20.000 belonging and inclusion on campus. Oh, yeah. 00:24:20.000 --> 00:24:23.000 Also bringing up a cohort, 00:24:23.000 --> 00:24:26.000 or hopefully a couple of big cohorts to sit on 00:24:26.000 --> 00:24:28.000 search committees so that we can start 00:24:28.000 --> 00:24:30.000 diversifying our staff and faculty. 00:24:30.000 --> 00:24:32.000 Our college is so small, 00:24:32.000 --> 00:24:34.000 I hope that with a couple of 00:24:34.000 --> 00:24:37.000 big cohorts through this search advocate training, 00:24:37.000 --> 00:24:39.000 we can start to really hit 00:24:39.000 --> 00:24:41.000 almost everybody that's going to 00:24:41.000 --> 00:24:45.000 be on a search committee. I don't think we'll be able to hit everybody, 00:24:45.000 --> 00:24:47.000 but a lot of people. 00:24:47.000 --> 00:24:51.000 This past Friday we had spring and service. 00:24:51.000 --> 00:24:54.000 We heard from Dr. Gina Garcia talking to us 00:24:54.000 --> 00:24:58.000 specifically about how to serve as an HSI. 00:24:58.000 --> 00:24:61.000 It went really well. It was very collaborative, very fun. 00:25:01.000 --> 00:25:03.000 She's a great speaker, if you haven't invited 00:25:03.000 --> 00:25:05.000 her to your campus to do workshops, 00:25:05.000 --> 00:25:09.000 highly recommend. Oh, yeah. 00:25:09.000 --> 00:25:12.000 Have to give a shout out to my colleague. 00:25:12.000 --> 00:25:14.000 Hi Carlos, if you're watching, 00:25:14.000 --> 00:25:17.000 Carlos works for CGCC's 00:25:17.000 --> 00:25:21.000 Small Business Development Center and he does 00:25:21.000 --> 00:25:24.000 consultation and training across 00:25:24.000 --> 00:25:28.000 the state as an arm of CGCC. 00:25:28.000 --> 00:25:31.000 Currently, according to their data, 00:25:34.000 --> 00:25:36.000 starts from the Latinx community, 00:25:36.000 --> 00:25:41.000 Carlos is doing really great. 00:25:41.000 --> 00:25:49.000 As part of building the floorboards of a DEI platform, 00:25:49.000 --> 00:25:53.000 I found that it was really important to have 00:25:53.000 --> 00:25:56.000 something at the very highest level 00:25:56.000 --> 00:25:58.000 of the college guiding us. 00:25:58.000 --> 00:25:62.000 I hope to put an equity decision-making tool 00:26:02.000 --> 00:26:05.000 into play next year. But before I do that, 00:26:05.000 --> 00:26:08.000 we have to protect the college 00:26:08.000 --> 00:26:10.000 right now with a statement like this. 00:26:10.000 --> 00:26:12.000 I'm just going to read it to you, 00:26:14.000 --> 00:26:17.000 promoting an academic and social environment that 00:26:17.000 --> 00:26:20.000 serves the evolving needs of the vibrant and diverse communities 00:26:20.000 --> 00:26:23.000 across It's district and beyond. 00:26:23.000 --> 00:26:26.000 CGCC is a student-centered teaching and learning, 00:26:26.000 --> 00:26:28.000 socially and economically just 00:26:28.000 --> 00:26:30.000 organization that's committed to 00:26:30.000 --> 00:26:34.000 being a critical resource for underserved and marginalized communities. 00:26:34.000 --> 00:26:37.000 CGCC commits to fostering 00:26:37.000 --> 00:26:41.000 an inclusive and equitable climate with programming, instruction, 00:26:41.000 --> 00:26:45.000 employment practices, community partnerships, 00:26:45.000 --> 00:26:47.000 and decision-making processes that 00:26:47.000 --> 00:26:50.000 value individual and group differences. 00:26:50.000 --> 00:26:53.000 CGCC is dedicated to 00:26:53.000 --> 00:26:56.000 continuous work to eliminate barriers 00:26:56.000 --> 00:26:62.000 that perpetuate inequity, oppression and injustice. 00:27:02.000 --> 00:27:05.000 was purposefully 00:27:05.000 --> 00:27:09.000 crafted without dog whistles, 00:27:09.000 --> 00:27:13.000 and it was purposely crafted to be this broad 00:27:13.000 --> 00:27:17.000 so that it can grow and expand with the institution. 00:27:17.000 --> 00:27:21.000 We know that there are political forces out 00:27:21.000 --> 00:27:24.000 there that don't like the work that we're doing, 00:27:24.000 --> 00:27:27.000 and so really crafting a statement that 00:27:27.000 --> 00:27:30.000 can guide the institution in a way 00:27:30.000 --> 00:27:37.000 that will hold it through those potentially troubling times was quite a feet. 00:27:37.000 --> 00:27:40.000 There were a number of stakeholders involved in crafting those statement, 00:27:40.000 --> 00:27:43.000 and we hope to have it on the books and 00:27:43.000 --> 00:27:47.000 the administrative regulations very soon. 00:27:47.000 --> 00:27:50.000 Now we're going to tell you a little bit about the future. 00:27:50.000 --> 00:27:54.000 privilege of attending 00:27:54.000 --> 00:27:57.000 the Excelencia Conference in Washington DC, 00:27:57.000 --> 00:27:60.000 the Vice President of Student Services, 00:28:00.000 --> 00:28:03.000 our President, Dr. Cronin and myself attended. 00:28:03.000 --> 00:28:07.000 It was an amazing event and we definitely 00:28:07.000 --> 00:28:10.000 have attached ourselves to the work, 00:28:10.000 --> 00:28:16.000 and ready to begin on a really magnificent journey. 00:28:16.000 --> 00:28:18.000 I think the most important things 00:28:18.000 --> 00:28:20.000 that I would like to highlight about 00:28:20.000 --> 00:28:22.000 our work going forward with 00:28:22.000 --> 00:28:26.000 Excelencia is beginning to review, 00:28:26.000 --> 00:28:31.000 process and understand or desegregate data, 00:28:31.000 --> 00:28:35.000 and understand it in a way that helps us with moving 00:28:35.000 --> 00:28:38.000 forward and helps us 00:28:38.000 --> 00:28:41.000 to really wrap our arms around what is needed, 00:28:41.000 --> 00:28:45.000 how to do it, and how to do it successfully. 00:28:45.000 --> 00:28:51.000 We will be working with really managing 00:28:51.000 --> 00:28:53.000 our data in a better way 00:28:53.000 --> 00:28:56.000 and looking at our completion rates. 00:28:56.000 --> 00:28:60.000 In addition to persistence I think we do see 00:29:00.000 --> 00:29:03.000 a lot of information when we look at our persistent rates, 00:29:03.000 --> 00:29:05.000 and so this is 00:29:05.000 --> 00:29:08.000 a really great opportunity for us going forward. 00:29:08.000 --> 00:29:11.000 I liked what our guest speaker said 00:29:11.000 --> 00:29:15.000 about building the framework of intentionality, 00:29:15.000 --> 00:29:17.000 I think it really begins with 00:29:17.000 --> 00:29:21.000 getting comfortable with those data informed 00:29:21.000 --> 00:29:23.000 conversations and understanding what 00:29:23.000 --> 00:29:25.000 to do with it rather than 00:29:25.000 --> 00:29:29.000 having negative aspects or 00:29:29.000 --> 00:29:31.000 negative lens and looking at that. 00:29:31.000 --> 00:29:36.000 Next slide, please. Expanding our knowledge 00:29:36.000 --> 00:29:41.000 through research, looking at change, building policies, 00:29:41.000 --> 00:29:44.000 and really embedding the work into everything that we do. 00:29:44.000 --> 00:29:47.000 Here's from the Excelencia website 00:29:47.000 --> 00:29:50.000 the data practice and leadership, 00:29:50.000 --> 00:29:53.000 it's really great work to sink your teeth into. 00:29:56.000 --> 00:29:60.000 that Excelencia has given us. 00:30:00.000 --> 00:30:03.000 Through our work with them we'll 00:30:03.000 --> 00:30:07.000 attend their annual convenience in Austin, Texas, 00:30:07.000 --> 00:30:10.000 we'll build a community of practice of 00:30:10.000 --> 00:30:13.000 other HSI's or aspiring HSI's 00:30:13.000 --> 00:30:16.000 that really want to lean 00:30:16.000 --> 00:30:20.000 into the serving apart of a HSI's. 00:30:20.000 --> 00:30:23.000 We'll have coaching on data and other things. 00:30:23.000 --> 00:30:25.000 We'll have technical assistance, 00:30:25.000 --> 00:30:30.000 will do this for about four years is the plan, 00:30:30.000 --> 00:30:34.000 and hopefully at the end of four years we'll get 00:30:34.000 --> 00:30:39.000 this seal of Excelencia hopefully fingers crossed. 00:30:39.000 --> 00:30:41.000 We'll talk to you before four years 00:30:41.000 --> 00:30:44.000 but check with us in four years. This is a little bit more. 00:30:44.000 --> 00:30:47.000 This is like the elevator speech, I'll read it to you. 00:30:48.000 --> 00:30:51.000 We're going to be doing best practices 00:30:51.000 --> 00:30:53.000 on how to build a data rich, 00:30:53.000 --> 00:30:55.000 grounded efforts through a Latinx lens 00:30:55.000 --> 00:30:57.000 to help with moving forward. 00:30:57.000 --> 00:30:60.000 CGCC's efforts's an HSI 00:31:00.000 --> 00:31:03.000 in tandem with going for the seal. 00:31:03.000 --> 00:31:07.000 Now it's time for us to 00:31:07.000 --> 00:31:11.000 work together, strategizing collaboratively. 00:31:11.000 --> 00:31:14.000 We know there's a lot of good work 00:31:14.000 --> 00:31:17.000 happening to your institutions, 00:31:17.000 --> 00:31:21.000 I know there is because I've talked to you. 00:31:23.000 --> 00:31:27.000 The three questions up here are part of 00:31:27.000 --> 00:31:31.000 a framework of critical action, liberatory action, 00:31:31.000 --> 00:31:33.000 defining a goal, 00:31:33.000 --> 00:31:37.000 strategizing what barriers might be in the way, 00:31:37.000 --> 00:31:40.000 and preemptively figuring out 00:31:40.000 --> 00:31:43.000 how to work around those barriers. 00:31:43.000 --> 00:31:45.000 We have about five minutes, 00:31:45.000 --> 00:31:48.000 I don't think we're going to solve racism 00:31:48.000 --> 00:31:51.000 or the problems of the world in five minutes. 00:31:51.000 --> 00:31:55.000 However, we have an opportunity 00:31:55.000 --> 00:31:58.000 to talk to the other people in the room. 00:31:58.000 --> 00:31:60.000 This is where the work happens, 00:32:00.000 --> 00:32:04.000 what goals do you have coming up? 00:32:04.000 --> 00:32:06.000 What do you think is going to get in the way of it? 00:32:06.000 --> 00:32:10.000 How can you strategize around it? 00:32:10.000 --> 00:32:12.000 I'm going to let you talk to each other for a little bit 00:32:12.000 --> 00:32:15.000 and we'll call you back in about 3-5 minutes. 00:32:18.000 --> 00:32:20.000 Sara's going to come around 00:32:20.000 --> 00:32:25.000 and see if anyone wants to take the mic and share. 00:32:26.000 --> 00:32:29.000 This question centers around 00:32:29.000 --> 00:32:33.000 translating things from English to Spanish, 00:32:33.000 --> 00:32:36.000 and I think I would like to hear from other people in 00:32:36.000 --> 00:32:38.000 the room potentially because 00:32:38.000 --> 00:32:40.000 these are my previous institution, 00:32:40.000 --> 00:32:42.000 this was a concern and 00:32:42.000 --> 00:32:45.000 also I believe it's a concern universally. 00:32:45.000 --> 00:32:47.000 The question was, who does 00:32:47.000 --> 00:32:50.000 the translation and are they adequately compensated? 00:32:50.000 --> 00:32:52.000 Because if it's a student worker, 00:32:52.000 --> 00:32:55.000 are they being compensated? 00:32:55.000 --> 00:32:59.000 Does anyone have comments about this? I'll come over. 00:33:03.000 --> 00:33:06.000 students doing the translation work, 00:33:06.000 --> 00:33:09.000 especially around Title 00:33:12.000 --> 00:33:15.000 Mountain Community College. 00:33:15.000 --> 00:33:18.000 For years and years at the college whenever we 00:33:18.000 --> 00:33:21.000 needed translation into Spanish, 00:33:23.000 --> 00:33:25.000 who were fluent in Spanish do the translation. 00:33:25.000 --> 00:33:27.000 They were compensated for it. 00:33:27.000 --> 00:33:29.000 Finally this year I said, 00:33:29.000 --> 00:33:32.000 we can't keep depending on that because they're trying to 00:33:32.000 --> 00:33:36.000 do their job and try to do this for us as well, 00:33:36.000 --> 00:33:38.000 so we found a third party that does 00:33:38.000 --> 00:33:41.000 it now and the name of it is link guava. 00:33:41.000 --> 00:33:43.000 We pay for that service now. 00:33:43.000 --> 00:33:45.000 We now build it into our budget, 00:33:45.000 --> 00:33:48.000 we send the document to them and they get it done 00:33:48.000 --> 00:33:52.000 fairly quickly and we're moving more and more to most, 00:33:52.000 --> 00:33:56.000 if not all of our documents being translated into Spanish. 00:33:57.000 --> 00:33:59.000 else have anything 00:33:59.000 --> 00:33:62.000 to share? You are? 00:34:02.000 --> 00:34:05.000 from Western Oregon. 00:34:05.000 --> 00:34:09.000 We actually for awhile used a service for translation, 00:34:09.000 --> 00:34:12.000 but we have a translator on campus, 00:34:12.000 --> 00:34:16.000 an employee on campus who translates number of our marketing materials. 00:34:16.000 --> 00:34:20.000 In addition, we use a translation service 00:34:20.000 --> 00:34:25.000 during our student recruitment events, 00:34:25.000 --> 00:34:28.000 orientation events, so that somebody is 00:34:28.000 --> 00:34:31.000 translating in Spanish during 00:34:31.000 --> 00:34:35.000 sessions which has been really helpful for 00:34:35.000 --> 00:34:37.000 our students and their families as 00:34:37.000 --> 00:34:40.000 they're thinking about what school they want to attend. 00:34:44.000 --> 00:34:46.000 good question too, 00:34:46.000 --> 00:34:49.000 because it starts to get into 00:34:49.000 --> 00:34:53.000 the issue of how our institutions 00:34:53.000 --> 00:34:62.000 get a lot of extra work out of folks who are bilingual. 00:35:02.000 --> 00:35:05.000 You speak the language can you translate this for me, 00:35:05.000 --> 00:35:07.000 or there's a student here can 00:35:07.000 --> 00:35:09.000 you come in and translate for us? 00:35:09.000 --> 00:35:12.000 It's extra work it takes extra bandwidth, 00:35:12.000 --> 00:35:15.000 it takes extra heart, it takes extra time, 00:35:15.000 --> 00:35:19.000 it's a big deal. Asking our institutions to add 00:35:19.000 --> 00:35:23.000 more compensation to the pay of folks who are bilingual. 00:35:23.000 --> 00:35:26.000 Another thing that we can do we can do it through 00:35:26.000 --> 00:35:30.000 union contracts or we can do it through expectations. 00:35:30.000 --> 00:35:34.000 we're out of time. 00:35:38.000 --> 00:35:43.000 our contact information up on the screen. 00:35:44.000 --> 00:35:49.000 Sara and I are so happy that you could join us today, 00:35:49.000 --> 00:35:54.000 and we wanted to thank you for all the work that you do. 00:35:54.000 --> 00:35:58.000 We know you work hard and we 00:35:58.000 --> 00:35:60.000 know that those work is 00:36:00.000 --> 00:36:03.000 so important for our communities, 00:36:03.000 --> 00:36:06.000 and so as we go out of 00:36:06.000 --> 00:36:09.000 here maybe you can just give yourselves a hand. 00:36:09.000 --> 00:36:11.000 Do you have any other words Sara? 00:36:11.000 --> 00:36:13.000 Thank you everyone.
