WEBVTT 00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:12.000 Hello, welcome to 00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:16.000 the Student Leadership & Activities portion of the Western Oregon University virtual 00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:20.000 Open House. My name is Megan Haberman and I am the Assistant 00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:24.000 Director for Student Leadership & Activities here at Western and I'm going to tell you 00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:28.000 a little bit more about what that means and then I'm going to tell you a little bit about what opportunities 00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:32.000 we have for new students and all of our students to get involved in 00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:36.000 different ways that you can get engaged with the campus community when you come to Western Oregon 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:40.000 Student Leadership and activities. We're an office here on campus 00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:44.000 and we're located in the Werner University Center which is in the heart of campus 00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:48.000 we are the office that helps get students connected to all the different involvement 00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:52.000 opportunities that there are on campus. We also provide direct advising to 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:56.000 a lot of different organizations. I myself advise our student government which is a lot 00:00:56.000 --> 00:00:60.000 like student counsel which is a lot like student counsel or different things like that at different 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:04.000 high schools and I advise them. They have three different branches and I 00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:08.000 advise the senate and I also advise the executive branch and I work with our judicial branch 00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:12.000 before too. We also advice the student activities board 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:16.000 and greek life and a bunch of different activities here on campus. We also 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:20.000 provide assistance in advising to all the different campus groups so they can be housing 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:24.000 groups or just student organizations. Any student that really wants to put on an event 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:28.000 we're gonna make that event happen. That can be anything. Earlier 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:32.000 today we were helping out students figure out bingo for this weekend but we also 00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:36.000 do huge events like homecoming and bonfires 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:40.000 and things like that. We also do a lot of leadership trainings so 00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:44.000 we do everything from full day conferences. We go in 00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:48.000 different organizations and help provide some group development activities and things like that 00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:52.000 I talked a little bit about what we advise directly and pretty much what we want to do 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:56.000 we want to do is help you find a connection on campus. We aren't 00:01:56.000 --> 00:01:60.000 necessarily the one stop shop for all leadership and activities, because there are so many 00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:04.000 different departments that put on activities here on campus, but we are going to be the person 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:08.000 that's going to help you figure out where to get involved. Maybe you're very interested in health 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:12.000 and wellness and you want to get engaged with being a peer mentor. We'll help you 00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:16.000 find that connection. Even we might not be the final stop on your destination to getting 00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:20.000 involved, we definitely want to be your first stop. In that picture 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:24.000 there you're going to see some students from our discover leadership program and I'll tell you a lot more about discover 00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:28.000 leadership in a little bit. They were trying to get 20 people on that platform so that's 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:32.000 a pretty fun activity that we do. Why is it important to get involved? 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:36.000 I have asked this question often times to my new students and I 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:40.000 personally think that it's extremely important to get involved. I'm going to go through 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:44.000 a few of those reasons today. The first reason 00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:48.000 is it improves your time management in all of your other skills. Often times 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:52.000 people have the misconception that if you're engaged in activities outside of the classroom 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:56.000 that you're going to get bad grades, because you're not paying attention to your classes 00:02:56.000 --> 00:02:60.000 that is absolutely not that case. We have actually found that studies have proven 00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:04.000 that students that are engaged with cocurricular activities 00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:08.000 are more likely to get higher GPAs and more likely to graduate 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:12.000 that is because they have to be better at time management. Because 00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:16.000 necessarily. Here is how it goes. Let's pretend you are in student activites board. They meet 00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:20.000 every Wednesday at 6. You have a final at 8am on Thursday 00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:24.000 well you need to start studying for that final before Wednesday night, because you know you have your 00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:28.000 Wednesday night commitment. Studying in advance is going to help you succeed regardless of whether or 00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:32.000 not you're involved so it's really one of those things that you learn to time manage 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:36.000 because your calendar is a little bit more full. You know at that 00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:40.000 point that you need to manage your time to be better in your classes which is going to help you be better overall. 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:43.000 It also helps just helps with other pieces. 00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:47.000 So for instance you might have some presentations in some of your classes 00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:53.000 that are going to be a significant part of your grade particularly as you get into those 300 and 400 level classes when you're getting ready to graduate. 00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:56.000 You might not ever present if you're not involved 00:03:56.000 --> 00:03:63.000 but if you are involved, inevitably you're going to be asked to stand up in front of a group of people and at least share a little about yourself 00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:08.000 and those things can really make you a better public speaker and help you be stronger in some of your coursework. 00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:13.000 Next, we want you to know you can get academic credit. 00:04:13.000 --> 00:04:16.000 One of the great things I think you're going to hear about later tonight with some of the faculty 00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:20.000 is that we have wonderful opportunities for our students to be involved 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:26.000 and activities that they really control such as student organizations but, also get academic credit. 00:04:26.000 --> 00:04:29.000 A great example for this is our Psychology Student Association. 00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:34.000 A lot of those students they dictate the agenda for the Psychology Student Association 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:36.000 but, they also get to be a part of research teams 00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:39.000 and so they get to publish research as undergraduates. 00:04:39.000 --> 00:04:42.000 Which is almost unheard of at a lot of other universities. 00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:47.000 So it's a really cool opportunity where they get to be in a club but also get academic credit. 00:04:47.000 --> 00:04:51.000 You also have something to put on your resume 00:04:51.000 --> 00:04:55.000 So this is a big one, this is usually the number one thing when I'm with a group of new students 00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:59.000 and I'll ask them to raise the hands and shout out answers and then I'll say it looks good on a resume. 00:04:59.000 --> 00:04:63.000 Absolutely, just like you need to bolster your resume to get into college 00:05:03.000 --> 00:05:06.000 once you get to college that doesn't stop 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:11.000 you need to make sure that your resume is continually improving so that you can be marketable for jobs in the future 00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:17.000 I think that something I never would have learned in my classes would be how to build an agenda or how to manage a budget 00:05:17.000 --> 00:05:21.000 but when I was in college I was president of our Resident Hall Association 00:05:21.000 --> 00:05:23.000 and I did both of those things every week. 00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:27.000 So I was able to really market that when I wanted to go into positions 00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:31.000 and those are things I still do almost every day in my current job. 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:34.000 So those are things that I can talk about in an interview 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:38.000 that somebody who chose not to get involved wouldn't be able to talk about. 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:41.000 Next, we have a Leadership Certificate Program 00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:43.000 so this is a really cool thing 00:05:43.000 --> 00:05:48.000 Western deeply believes that we have wonderful student leaders that need to get credit for this 00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:53.000 and while we don't have a leadership minor, we do have this program that gives you a certificate 00:05:53.000 --> 00:05:57.000 and we acknowledge you at graduation with chords and in the graduation program 00:05:57.000 --> 00:05:62.000 and what we're saying is that we think that you have met the 6 core competencies 00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:05.000 that we think all leaders with a Western Oregon Degree should have 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:08.000 and you work with an on campus faculty or staff mentor 00:06:08.000 --> 00:06:11.000 and then you are acknowledged for this and you have the full backing of this program 00:06:11.000 --> 00:06:16.000 you can show a future employer the qualifications to get in the program and to stay in the program 00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:23.000 which require a fairly high GPA and they require you to meet lots of different competencies 00:06:23.000 --> 00:06:26.000 you not only have service but you also have professional devolpment 00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:32.000 so maybe you're very into volunteering but you're not very into doing professional things like budget management 00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:35.000 and some of those things, I know I was that way when I was in college. 00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:39.000 So we can definitely work with you to make sure you are learning all of those different things 00:06:39.000 --> 00:06:43.000 throughout the process and that you get credit at the end. 00:06:43.000 --> 00:06:46.000 Next, you get to meet people with the same interests 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:50.000 A lot of people make a ton of wonderful friends when they're starting off here at Western 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:54.000 when they work with their SOAR groups or their halls as they move into the residence halls 00:06:54.000 --> 00:06:59.000 but, eventually you're going to leave campus housing or move from your first year hall 00:06:59.000 --> 00:06:61.000 and have new people that you're going to hang out with 00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:07.000 so it's really great to join organizations cause you know those people have at least one similar interest as you do. 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:12.000 You also are going to make more connections on campus which means you're more likely to graduate. 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:16.000 I see this all the time we have students who will come to talk to 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:20.000 a student organization advisor about something that's completely unrelated to their area 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:25.000 we have somebody in our public relations department who advises a gaming club 00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:29.000 and she came to me because one of her students was struggling academically 00:07:29.000 --> 00:07:32.000 and she wasn't sure where to send them so we were able to help 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:35.000 find them those resources that were really important for them 00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:38.000 even though that's not what she or I do on a daily basis 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:40.000 So then having those connections on campus 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:44.000 either to your peers or to the faculty and staff members that work with these groups 00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:46.000 can really help you be successful. 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:48.000 You also might make some money 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:51.000 We have a lot of positions on campus that will pay you 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:56.000 we even have a lot of student employment, just straight up jobs that are going to really prepare you for the future. 00:07:56.000 --> 00:07:60.000 If you're worried about being able to balance all of these involvements 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:04.000 as well as balance your job and all of these other 00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:08.000 things don't worry about it, because we are going to have positions here that 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:12.000 will help pay for things, specially those positions that require some more hours out of you 00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:16.000 but if you do need to have a full time job while you're in college, we have a lot 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:20.000 of low level opportunities that don't require a ton of time from you that might not pay 00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:24.000 you, but still let you be involved at your own level. 00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:28.000 Speaking of money, you're going to be paying for it so also 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:32.000 students pay an incidental fee and that fee goes to paying for athletics 00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:36.000 the health and wellness center, the university center and student leadership 00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:40.000 activities and your student government and all those different things go toward different 00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:44.000 events but to students like you that are going to be part of clubs and 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:48.000 be part of organizations that are putting on events for other students 00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:52.000 it's just like taxes, if you want to get the most out of it you need to take advantage of those programs 00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:56.000 and to really learn a lot from those different opportunities here on campus 00:08:56.000 --> 00:08:60.000 I always encourage students to get what they are paying for. 00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:04.000 I always want to remind people that leadership is truly for everyone 00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:08.000 people saying to me, I'm not very outgoing I couldn't possibly 00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:12.000 be an orientation leader. Well, that's true for some people 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:16.000 and maybe that's not the best fit for you, but maybe you'd be really great at being a 00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:20.000 residence assistant, because they need to have more one on one connections and they take a longer 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:24.000 to develop relationships with their students. So there's still going to be 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:28.000 opportunity for you somewhere on campus. Maybe you're like I have a very specific 00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:32.000 skill set, I'm a very good artist, but I'm really not good at facilitating 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:36.000 groups. Well great, I'm sure there's still opportunities for you to maybe get a job in the 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:40.000 graphic design department or to work with the art club or to work as a free 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:44.000 lance graphic designer for different clubs and organizations for their posters. There's still 00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:48.000 opportunities for you to get engaged outside of your classroom and be 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:52.000 making sure that you're making new friends outside. The last one is the number one 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:56.000 reason to get involved and that is just to have fun. 00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:60.000 I swear to you, I'm not going to make you do anything you don't want to do for your 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:04.000 college. It's a lot of fun to get involved. 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:08.000 The best part about it is that sometimes when you're getting involved before college 00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:12.000 there is requirements you know you gotta get a least to stay after school or you have to 00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:16.000 commit to so many meetings or you have to sign up for it and then you're kind of 00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:20.000 stuck with it for a whole semester. Once you get to Western Oregon University the world 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:24.000 is kind of your oyster when it comes to getting involved. I always encourage students to sign up for 00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:28.000 as many clubs as they possibly could be interested in at the student organization fair. 00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:32.000 Go to at least one meeting for each of those clubs and then decide which ones are really 00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:36.000 a good fit for them. So there is no penalty for if you get involved and then decide 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:40.000 you don't like that club later or you apply for something and then 00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:44.000 in the middle of applying for that you decide to do something else. There is no penalty 00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:48.000 for any of that so really you get to stretch yourself and try new things. 00:10:48.000 --> 00:10:52.000 I'm always encouraging to do something different than what they did when they were in high school 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:56.000 If you were an athlete I would encourage you to join a student organization or student 00:10:56.000 --> 00:10:60.000 government and vice versa if you were in student government I would encourage you to go out for intramural 00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:04.000 and to have fun and to make friends that way, because you really want to try new things 00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:08.000 You really don't know what else is out there and there's so little risk in terms of 00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:12.000 you know that commitment here at college that you can't go wrong there is really no 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:16.000 wrong. Alright, so those are the 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:20.000 reasons why it's really important to get involved and I'm sure that you can think of a ton more 00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:24.000 Those are just kind of the main ones that I wanted to talk about with you today. Now were going to go more into 00:11:24.000 --> 00:11:28.000 what opportunities are available here specifically at Western Oregon University. 00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:32.000 So, how can you get involved. Well the number one way that new students get involved 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:36.000 is through their hall government. Those applications are available in your hall when you move in 00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:40.000 in the first two weeks and you can be anything from your halls president to 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:44.000 you know just like a floor rep and all those positions are extremely important 00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:48.000 and it's a great way to make sure that the community that you're living in is reflective of 00:11:48.000 --> 00:11:52.000 what you want it to be. There's activities and policies and all kinds of things that are reflected 00:11:52.000 --> 00:11:56.000 of what you want your living situation to be. We also have student senate. So that 00:11:56.000 --> 00:11:60.000 is a branch of our student government and they represent all students so it's similar 00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:04.000 to hall government, but they represent a wider variety of the issues. 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:08.000 I know something that they are working on right now is trying to figure out how 00:12:08.000 --> 00:12:12.000 to make sure that online courses are marketed fairly to students 00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:16.000 because some students don't understand they're signing up for an online class until registration is already packed. 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:20.000 So, how can we work with our departments to make sure that those things are being communicated. 00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:24.000 That might not seem like a huge issue but it has been really confusing for some students and so 00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:28.000 we're here trying to make sure that our students are really understanding this 00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:32.000 We also have a ton of on campus jobs, so we have a whole online job database 00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:36.000 and that is a wonderful way to meet new people and get engaged and definitely earn some money 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:40.000 We have intramurals and club sports. I'm going to tell you a secret about intramurals 00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:44.000 We have two different leagues in intramurals. We have competitive and non competitive. 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:48.000 Even if you've never played basketball in your entire life 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:52.000 and you really want to play, just sign up for a non competitive league 00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:56.000 also teams are so big often times people can't find enough people to be on their team 00:12:56.000 --> 00:12:60.000 so they are always looking for people to come and join their team that they don't know. It's one 00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:04.000 of those things that on campus people are already attracting people they don't know to join their teams 00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:08.000 So, it's a great way to make new friends. We also have over 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:12.000 sixty five student organizations. I encourage you as the year goes on and as you consider Western 00:13:12.000 --> 00:13:16.000 to always check out our website, because they are always changing 00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:20.000 and it's really easy to make an organization so we often times will have that change throughout the 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:24.000 year. We also have discover leadership which is the program that you see 00:13:24.000 --> 00:13:28.000 at Kayla and Austin with their little certificates right there and that 00:13:28.000 --> 00:13:32.000 how the ropes course at the beginning. That's a ten week workshop series that we oversee 00:13:32.000 --> 00:13:36.000 that helps students get really engaged. So if what I'm saying right now is completely 00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:40.000 foreign to you and you've never been involved in a club and it's not something that 00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:44.000 you are really confident in. This is a great program for you. Even if you're super 00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:48.000 involved in your school right now, but you're like I don't know if I can do it at a college 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:52.000 I'm from a really small high school. That's a lot of people. 00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:56.000 Again, even if you already have some of the basic skills it can be a good way to network and meet other 00:13:56.000 --> 00:13:60.000 people. We take applications for the first four weeks of fall term so you have a lot 00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:04.000 of time to make a decision about that program. We also have the Student Activities Board and they are 00:14:04.000 --> 00:14:08.000 constantly looking for volunteers. They have huge events. They do our annual holiday 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:12.000 tree lighting where we have a parade, they go all through town. We also 00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:16.000 do our homecoming events where we paint the wolf in the middle of the street and we have fireworks 00:14:16.000 --> 00:14:20.000 and homecoming court and powderpuff football. A lot of events that need a lot of 00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:24.000 volunteers. And so they are always looking for new students to get involved. 00:14:24.000 --> 00:14:28.000 So that's kind of your first term so how else 00:14:28.000 --> 00:14:32.000 can you get involved after your first term. So we have fraternity and sorority life here at Western 00:14:32.000 --> 00:14:36.000 that is pretty new. If you know friends or family that went to Western they'll probably tell you we 00:14:36.000 --> 00:14:40.000 dont have greek life, but we do. We have two fraternities and one sorority. 00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:44.000 We are working on a few more organizations to join us, but 00:14:44.000 --> 00:14:48.000 right now we have about I'd say about 75 students that are involved in greek life and so they 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:52.000 Rush in Winter Term and so that is something that you could definitely do. 00:14:52.000 --> 00:14:56.000 You can also apply to be a resident assistant a PLUS Team Peer Advisor which is what we 00:14:56.000 --> 00:14:60.000 call orientation leaders which is kind of like link crew or peer mentor 00:15:00.000 --> 00:15:04.000 the hiring season for that is always in winter. That's something you could get involved 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:08.000 that will pay you and it's a high profile leadership position here on campus 00:15:08.000 --> 00:15:12.000 You can also run for ASWOU which is what we call our student 00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:16.000 government or the residence hall association positions in the spring term. 00:15:16.000 --> 00:15:20.000 And student media. So now that you know campus a little bit better 00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:24.000 this is a great opportunity to get involved in student media we have three different 00:15:24.000 --> 00:15:28.000 functions of student media. We have our Western Oregon Journal which is 00:15:28.000 --> 00:15:32.000 our newspaper which is always looking for freelance writers and photographers. We also 00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:36.000 have KWOU which is our online radio station so you should definitely check that out 00:15:36.000 --> 00:15:40.000 now, because you can listen to it anywhere that you have an internet connection and we also have 00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:44.000 our Northwest Passage literary magazine which is a great way to get published 00:15:44.000 --> 00:15:48.000 if you're an artist or write poems and that comes out twice a year. 00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:52.000 They're always taking submissions for that, they're usually looking for djs 00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:56.000 and are almost always looking for freelance photographers and writers so that's a great way to 00:15:56.000 --> 00:15:60.000 get involved at anytime during our college career. You can start a club 00:16:00.000 --> 00:16:04.000 all you need is five friends and an idea. Literally all you need 00:16:04.000 --> 00:16:08.000 is five people to be on your paperwork with you that are interested in the same idea as you and 00:16:08.000 --> 00:16:12.000 an idea so if you wanted to start you know 00:16:12.000 --> 00:16:16.000 let's say a hiking club, we currently don't have a hiking club. If you want to start a hiking club 00:16:16.000 --> 00:16:20.000 we would help you out with all of that paperwork and yes there is a little bit of paperwork that goes with that, but that 00:16:20.000 --> 00:16:24.000 is what we are here to do. We're here to help you start that club. You can also serve on different campus 00:16:24.000 --> 00:16:28.000 committees. If you're very dedicated to making Western a better place 00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:32.000 you can sit on our tuition revision committee or our student health and advisory 00:16:32.000 --> 00:16:36.000 committee using on different committees or you can go on an 00:16:36.000 --> 00:16:40.000 alternative break or service learning trip. The picture on the top there are some students in Honduras that 00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:44.000 are tutoring some children at a local orphanage. We have a lot of different 00:16:44.000 --> 00:16:48.000 opportunities that go locally and globally to help different 00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:52.000 people across the united states and the world. 00:16:52.000 --> 00:16:56.000 When I do these presentations I usually do them to a live audience and 00:16:56.000 --> 00:16:60.000 that are in-front of me and not through the computer so I usually bring a student leader with me. 00:17:00.000 --> 00:17:04.000 Because I know that that's really what you want to hear from, so I collected a few quotes 00:17:04.000 --> 00:17:08.000 from students that have been involved in a lot of different things and so the next couple slides 00:17:08.000 --> 00:17:12.000 are going to show you what our students currently think about being involved and I asked them 00:17:12.000 --> 00:17:16.000 just to tell me what do you think is important or what do you like best 00:17:16.000 --> 00:17:20.000 about being involved. You can see that Kelsey has really enjoyed 00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:24.000 learning something different. She's really enjoyed meeting people 00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:28.000 and really getting engaged and she's done some service trips and she's also been an orientation 00:17:28.000 --> 00:17:32.000 leader. Below her is Jenesa. Jenesa is 00:17:32.000 --> 00:17:36.000 our current ASWOU Judicial Administrator and she has a very lengthy 00:17:36.000 --> 00:17:40.000 I actually had to edit that down, because she just couldn't shorten it down. 00:17:40.000 --> 00:17:44.000 I will have so many nice things to say about being involved. I'll let you 00:17:44.000 --> 00:17:48.000 read her thoughts. But I know one of the things that Jenesa really said was that she 00:17:48.000 --> 00:17:52.000 gets to feel like she makes a difference and that's really important to her. I think 00:17:52.000 --> 00:17:56.000 whenever you go to, whether it's high school or community college 00:17:56.000 --> 00:17:60.000 or when you come to Western, there's procedures and policies 00:18:00.000 --> 00:18:04.000 that are very confusing and seem like totally out of your control and I think 00:18:04.000 --> 00:18:08.000 being involved you learn a lot more about why those things exist but you also learn about how you 00:18:08.000 --> 00:18:12.000 can influence and change those things for the better and so that's been really 00:18:12.000 --> 00:18:16.000 important to Jenesa. We have a few more quotes so up at the top 00:18:16.000 --> 00:18:20.000 is Kevin he is currently the grand master of Omega Delta Phi a multicultural 00:18:20.000 --> 00:18:24.000 fraternity and he talked a lot about the unity and closeness that he has 00:18:24.000 --> 00:18:28.000 with his brothers and how important that has been for him as he's been here at Western 00:18:28.000 --> 00:18:32.000 and then Becky Schroeder she is our 00:18:32.000 --> 00:18:36.000 I think she is our traditions chair for student activities board this year. She changes positions 00:18:36.000 --> 00:18:40.000 all the time. She'll just do whatever we need. And so she wanted to 00:18:40.000 --> 00:18:44.000 give you a little bit of advice and then below we have Andrew, Jovany, 00:18:44.000 --> 00:18:48.000 and Carolina from multicultural student union who were nice enough to 00:18:48.000 --> 00:18:52.000 each give me quotes about their experiences and a lot of them 00:18:52.000 --> 00:18:56.000 if you look at the quotes and you kind of think about them a lot of them 00:18:56.000 --> 00:18:60.000 are happy to make friends that they were just really excited about a new way to make friends 00:19:00.000 --> 00:19:04.000 and to make connections on campus and that's all that it's about 00:19:04.000 --> 00:19:08.000 sometimes people are worried that if they get involved that it's going to require 00:19:08.000 --> 00:19:12.000 a lot from them in terms of time or commitment or effort and that might be 00:19:12.000 --> 00:19:16.000 true but at the same time it's also true that we just really want you to make connections 00:19:16.000 --> 00:19:20.000 and make friends here on campus so that is all the time that 00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:24.000 I have tonight. Thank you so much for joining us I am really excited to meet you when 00:19:24.000 --> 00:19:28.000 you come to Western. Again there's my email if you have any further questions 00:19:28.000 --> 00:19:32.000 I really appreciate your time today and I look forward to meeting you in the future. 00:19:32.000 --> 00:19:36.000 Thanks 00:19:36.000 --> 00:19:40.000 MUSIC
