Last summer 00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:08.000 the Western Oregon University Foundation received a call from 00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:12.000 an alumnus Anna Hansen. She was hoping to track 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:16.000 down her scholarship name and donor. She wanted 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:20.000 to thank them for the impact they had on her life. 00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:24.000 The foundation loves to facilitate this type of interaction just like 00:11:24.000 --> 00:11:28.000 tonight with all of us. And although they searched 00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:32.000 they could not fulfill her wish. You see Anna was 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:36.000 ninety and received her scholarship seventy two years ago. 00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:40.000 The foundation told her that if she was willing 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:44.000 they would still welcome her thank you letter and instead 00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:48.000 share it with current donors and contacts so 00:11:48.000 --> 00:11:52.000 tonight it's my honor to read Anna's letter. 00:11:52.000 --> 00:11:57.000 Dear WOU Foundation 00:11:57.000 --> 00:11:60.000 attending college was totally unexpected 00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:04.000 for me. A high school faculty member had applied for 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:08.000 a scholarship for me during the last month of school. 00:12:08.000 --> 00:12:12.000 I graduated from Salem High the first Friday in June 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:20.000 Oregon College of Education on Sunday. 00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:24.000 A small group of us started our college life that summer. 00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:28.000 Monmouth was a small town then with Jessica Todd Hall 00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:32.000 Dormitory at the north end. We new students 00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:36.000 became acquainted with returning teachers and quickly found our 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:40.000 way around campus and town. As I recall 00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:44.000 seventy two years ago our classes were pretty well laid out 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:48.000 for our program which was three years. 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:52.000 Barring some choices in PE, Art, Music, etc. 00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:56.000 After Fall Quarter several of us moved to 00:12:56.000 --> 00:12:60.000 Howell House and learned how to share kitchens and other spaces 00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:04.000 as well as learning from our independence. 00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:08.000 This time also marked the US entry into World War 2 and 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:12.000 rationing and shortages as well as the 00:13:12.000 --> 00:13:16.000 opening of Camp Adair a local USO 00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:20.000 and soldiers. My scholarship had provided me with the 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:24.000 opportunity for a good education and a chance to meet and mix 00:13:24.000 --> 00:13:28.000 with students from other locations. The smaller classes 00:13:28.000 --> 00:13:32.000 and friendly faculty encouraged and guided. 00:13:32.000 --> 00:13:36.000 I graduated summer of 1943 and started teaching 00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:40.000 in McMinnville, Oregon in September for a starting salary 00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:44.000 of $1,200 a year. 00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:48.000 Teaching jobs were easier to get at this time 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:52.000 and since I had not traveled much before I took jobs in Portland, 00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:56.000 Salem, and Klamath Falls, Oregon 00:13:56.000 --> 00:13:60.000 Seattle, Washington and Escondido, California over the next ten years. 00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:04.000 After my marriage in 1951 00:14:04.000 --> 00:14:08.000 and Ed's getting out of the navy we settled in Ellensburg 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:12.000 Washington in 1953. 00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:16.000 In 1965 when the youngest of our four children was ready for Kindergarden 00:14:16.000 --> 00:14:20.000 I was offered a special education teaching position 00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:24.000 in Ellensburg, I taught four years and took 00:14:24.000 --> 00:14:28.000 classes at Central Washington State College now 00:14:28.000 --> 00:14:32.000 CWU. During this time Ed returned 00:14:32.000 --> 00:14:36.000 to college and earned his teaching certificate then we moved 00:14:36.000 --> 00:14:40.000 to a small town in eastern Washington where we taught for ten years. 00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:44.000 By this time we were empty nesters 00:14:44.000 --> 00:14:48.000 so we took the opportunity to teach in a small native village 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:52.000 on Yukon river halfway between Fairbanks and Nome 00:14:52.000 --> 00:14:56.000 for four years before retiring. Without 00:14:56.000 --> 00:14:60.000 the initial help of the scholarship this would not have been. 00:15:00.000 --> 00:15:04.000 Many thanks to the many groups both large 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:08.000 and small who supply and support these opportunities. 00:15:08.000 --> 00:15:13.000 Sincerely Anna Hansen Sullivan Scholarship 1941. 00:15:13.000 --> 00:15:19.000 I am excited to see where my scholarship leads me in life 00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:24.000 and I look forward to writing my own letter at ninety. 00:15:24.000 --> 00:15:28.000 Thank you all for allowing me to read you Anna's story. 00:15:28.000 --> 00:15:30.000 Applause 00:15:30.000 --> 00:15:35.000 I think we can all identify with something in Anna's letter whether it was the 00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:40.000 unexpected gift of college, the growth of college years, 00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:44.000 a fondness of life's twists and turns or ultimately the immense 00:15:44.000 --> 00:15:48.000 gratitude for one critical moment in life that leads you down 00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:52.000 your own life's path. For many of our students 00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:56.000 at Western scholarships are the critical moment 00:15:56.000 --> 00:15:60.000 just like it was for Anna. Eighty percent of our student population 00:16:00.000 --> 00:16:04.000 is from Oregon. Forty-six percent are considered 00:16:04.000 --> 00:16:08.000 low income and are Pell Grant recipients. The university 00:16:08.000 --> 00:16:12.000 is increasingly female and diverse. 00:16:12.000 --> 00:16:16.000 And each student although having a common thread 00:16:16.000 --> 00:16:20.000 have their own story their own moment. 00:16:20.000 --> 00:16:24.000 This fall more than one hundred students came together to celebrate receiving a scholarship. 00:16:24.000 --> 00:16:28.000 Some of them on video shared their scholarship story. 00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:32.000 And now we would like to drop the screen and have you 00:16:32.000 --> 00:16:36.000 hear from students themselves about the impact you 00:16:36.000 --> 00:16:39.000 friends of the university have on them. 00:16:39.000 --> 00:16:46.000 Music 00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:51.000 This scholarship is going to allow me to finish my degree in a more timely manner 00:16:51.000 --> 00:16:56.000 than only being able to take a certain amount of credits at a time purely because I can't afford it. 00:16:56.000 --> 00:16:60.000 This scholarship is really allowing me to be able to 00:17:00.000 --> 00:17:03.000 complete my dream of being an elementary school teacher. 00:17:03.000 --> 00:17:08.000 These scholarships have allowed me to continue my education. Without them it would 00:17:08.000 --> 00:17:12.000 have been very difficult financially for me to continue studying here at Western and 00:17:12.000 --> 00:17:16.000 so being able to continue being at this college that I love so much 00:17:16.000 --> 00:17:21.000 and achieving the goals and the dreams that I have set out for myself is something really special. 00:17:21.000 --> 00:17:24.000 This scholarship has made an impact on me 00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:28.000 because I've been able to complete my education this year otherwise I may not have been able to 00:17:28.000 --> 00:17:32.000 finish my Bachelor's in criminal justice. 00:17:32.000 --> 00:17:38.000 My lifelong goal or childhood goal has been to go into investigations and that's what I hope to do once I graduate. 00:17:38.000 --> 00:17:40.000 I knew I wanted to go to Western 00:17:40.000 --> 00:17:44.000 at the beginning of my senior year but didn't really know how I was going to pay for it. 00:17:44.000 --> 00:17:51.000 I was banking on a couple of scholarships. I was able to get enough scholarship money that I could come here my freshman year and figure it out from there. 00:17:51.000 --> 00:17:54.000 So this scholarship was actually kind of a tipping point for me. 00:17:54.000 --> 00:17:61.000 Music 00:18:01.000 --> 00:18:07.000 I'm grateful for my scholarship because I'm able to spend my time volunteering and mentoring youth 00:18:08.000 --> 00:18:11.000 instead of needing to work fulltime while attending school. 00:18:11.000 --> 00:18:15.000 It gives me the chance to actually get to go college which I am so thankful for. 00:18:15.000 --> 00:18:20.000 I've always wanted to be an elementary school teacher 00:18:20.000 --> 00:18:28.000 and you know that obviously doesn't pay that great so it's awesome to have scholarships like this that help pay for school so I don't get overburdened by loans. 00:18:28.000 --> 00:18:36.000 It allows me to go to a school like Western Oregon which is just an amazing place to be and it allows me to go to college 00:18:36.000 --> 00:18:40.000 and get a degree and do something with my life. 00:18:40.000 --> 00:18:46.000 Music 00:18:46.000 --> 00:18:55.000 I'm from a poor family where we don't have enough money so we thought that I wouldn't continue with my education. 00:18:55.000 --> 00:18:61.000 Without the scholarship I wouldn't be able to achieve my career goal of working in wildlife managment 00:19:01.000 --> 00:19:05.000 and doing field work for conservation biology. 00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:11.000 Without the scholarships that I have received from Western especially this one I wouldn't be able to be here. 00:19:11.000 --> 00:19:16.000 I wouldn't have been able to come up with the money to be able to come and get a formal education. 00:19:16.000 --> 00:19:23.000 Music 00:19:23.000 --> 00:19:30.000 Thank you. Thank you so much. This is making my dreams for education and a good job 00:19:30.000 --> 00:19:34.000 and making being a professional in my field possible. 00:19:34.000 --> 00:19:43.000 Out of all of the people they could have picked they picked me and that's pretty cool and I want to show them that I'm worthy of the scholarship that they gave me. 00:19:43.000 --> 00:19:51.000 It's just such a blessing and I hope that one day I can give back to my community the way that they've given to theirs. 00:19:51.000 --> 00:19:55.000 Really words cannot describe how grateful I am for that scholarship and 00:19:56.000 --> 00:19:64.000 I hope that at some point in my life I will be able to give back to college students just like myself as these donors have done. 00:20:04.000 --> 00:20:09.000 I want to say thank you for giving me the scholarship and I appreciate 00:20:09.000 --> 00:20:13.000 everything that they've done and I look forward you more of my artwork in the future. 00:20:13.000 --> 00:20:16.000 I'd really just like to say a heartfelt thank you. 00:20:16.000 --> 00:20:22.000 Music 00:20:22.000 --> 00:20:26.000 Before we move on I understand that we have a special guest. 00:20:26.000 --> 00:20:33.000 Applause 00:20:33.000 --> 00:20:37.000 Wolfy my friend I'm so glad that you're here. 00:20:37.000 --> 00:20:47.000 Did you know we have faculty and alumni from the OCE and WOSC too? 00:20:47.000 --> 00:20:52.000 As you know at heart we are all wolves. 00:20:52.000 --> 00:20:56.000 Is this for me? 00:20:56.000 --> 00:20:60.000 It's a thank you card. 00:21:00.000 --> 00:21:09.000 Do you want me to read this to the group?
