The first student has a true heart for people in service. 00:24:52.000 --> 00:24:59.000 She ran and operated the LBGTQ campus resource center. She has worked three years as an orientation leader. 00:25:00.000 --> 00:25:05.000 She has led two service trips, one to Cusco Peru and one to Cape Verde, Africa 00:25:05.000 --> 00:25:09.000 where she spent her time volunteering at orphanages and children centers. 00:25:09.000 --> 00:25:14.000 As a sophomore she won the Maurice Undergraduate Initiative Prize Competition 00:25:14.000 --> 00:25:19.000 that worked to gain support and visibility for the LBGTQ community on campus 00:25:19.000 --> 00:25:24.000 She did all of this and more while maintaining a 3.6 GPA 00:25:24.000 --> 00:25:28.000 This woman's passion for people shines through in her day-to-day life. 00:25:28.000 --> 00:25:33.000 After graduation she hopes to stay involved in international philanthropy and social justice work. 00:25:33.000 --> 00:25:38.000 I am pleased to introduce the recipient of the Julia McColloch Smith Female Student of the Year Award; 00:25:38.000 --> 00:25:41.000 Hillevi Johnson 00:25:52.000 --> 00:25:60.000 Hello (laughs) 00:26:00.000 --> 00:26:06.000 In my hand I'm holding an assessment sheet from a program I participated in before kindergarten. 00:26:06.000 --> 00:26:16.000 This 18 year old paper lists the program's focus areas and the teacher highlighted skills that 'needed improvement. 00:26:16.000 --> 00:26:21.000 Perhaps in Kindergarten you needed more practice with the alphabet? 00:26:21.000 --> 00:26:25.000 Or maybe counting wasn't quite your cup of tea. 00:26:25.000 --> 00:26:30.000 Well out of the 9 categories that were predominately academic, 00:26:30.000 --> 00:26:36.000 on my report card, Mrs. Adams highlighted two: 00:26:40.000 --> 00:26:46.000 The comments below mention that 'Hillevi needs to be more considerate of others'. 00:26:46.000 --> 00:26:49.000 yikes. 00:26:49.000 --> 00:26:56.000 But finding this paper, nearly two decades later, was monumental. How could that be? 00:26:56.000 --> 00:26:60.000 Because it shows that for the entirety of my life, 00:27:00.000 --> 00:27:04.000 I've struggled with an innate dependency on myself'" 00:27:04.000 --> 00:27:11.000 since age 5, preoccupied with my personal situation first and then looking to others after'" 00:27:11.000 --> 00:27:14.000 and only here at Western 00:27:14.000 --> 00:27:21.000 have I begun to understand the crucial importance of other human beings and the interconnectedness that we all share. 00:27:21.000 --> 00:27:28.000 I was ruminating on this recently, wishing that I had made more of an effort 00:27:28.000 --> 00:27:31.000 to let others in, to be kind. 00:27:31.000 --> 00:27:36.000 It felt as though my time for self-transformation was fading. 00:27:36.000 --> 00:27:40.000 As if the pre-determined structure'"K-12, 00:27:40.000 --> 00:27:46.000 Freshman-Senior'"were my parameters for becoming the person I want to be. 00:27:46.000 --> 00:27:51.000 until I realized that this is not an end, I am not finished. 00:27:51.000 --> 00:27:54.000 That's the message that I want to share. 00:27:54.000 --> 00:27:59.000 We are not finished. You are not finished. 00:27:59.000 --> 00:27:63.000 I know it's thrown about that 'college is a great time 00:28:03.000 --> 00:28:06.000 step out of your comfort zone and to try something new" '" 00:28:06.000 --> 00:28:09.000 I absolutely agree'" 00:28:09.000 --> 00:28:13.000 but when's a better and even more crucial time to make those changes? 00:28:13.000 --> 00:28:16.000 The rest of your life. 00:28:16.000 --> 00:28:22.000 Whether you want to improve your health, switch your career path, or take more chances, 00:28:22.000 --> 00:28:29.000 embrace the fear and do it anyway-whatever your 'it' may be, you still can. 00:28:29.000 --> 00:28:36.000 I can still practice those words that Mrs. Adams highlighted on my pre-K report card, 00:28:36.000 --> 00:28:39.000 by sharing and being a good friend. 00:28:39.000 --> 00:28:43.000 With a degree comes a responsibility to the world'" 00:28:43.000 --> 00:28:48.000 to use the privilege and knowledge we have gained to make a positive difference. 00:28:48.000 --> 00:28:52.000 But we also have a responsibility to ourselves. 00:28:52.000 --> 00:28:56.000 As you have invested in your education, 00:28:56.000 --> 00:28:60.000 invest in your own transformation, because you are not finished. 00:29:00.000 --> 00:29:05.000 My favorite spoken-word poet, Andrea Gibson, said 00:29:12.000 --> 00:29:20.000 We are not finished. Class of 2014, let's become. Thank you. 00:29:28.000 --> 00:29:33.000 Hello, again. The next student has been a mentor and tutor for the last three years 00:29:33.000 --> 00:29:37.000 to first year students, to low-income, first generation, and underrepresented backgrounds. 00:29:37.000 --> 00:29:42.000 He has worked in the residence halls, student government, and the Service Learning Career Development Center. 00:29:42.000 --> 00:29:46.000 Last year, he was selected as the only TRIO student in the nation 00:29:46.000 --> 00:29:50.000 to study at the Les Aspin Center for Government in Washington D.C. 00:29:50.000 --> 00:29:55.000 He also then interned for U.S. Congressman Peter DeFazio. 00:29:55.000 --> 00:29:59.000 He did this and more while raising a new born child. 00:29:59.000 --> 00:29:64.000 This fall he will be studying Higher Education Policy at Stanford University 00:30:04.000 --> 00:30:08.000 with the intent to find new ways of making higher education affordable 00:30:08.000 --> 00:30:11.000 and accessible to all students. 00:30:11.000 --> 00:30:15.000 Yea...(cheering) I am honored to introduce 00:30:15.000 --> 00:30:20.000 one of the most thoughtful people I know, and the recipient of the Delmer Dewey Male Student of the Year Award, 00:30:20.000 --> 00:30:24.000 Anthony Medina 00:30:36.000 --> 00:30:39.000 My biological father was an undocumented immigrant 00:30:39.000 --> 00:30:44.000 My biological father was an undocumented immigrant who was arrested, incarcerated, and deported. 00:30:44.000 --> 00:30:47.000 my mom was 16 and pregnant before the MTV show. 00:30:47.000 --> 00:30:52.000 Mom I love you. [laughter] My grandparents raised me for most of my life. 00:30:52.000 --> 00:30:56.000 in their earlier years they were seasonal migrant workers and traveled throughout Texas, 00:30:56.000 --> 00:30:59.000 California, and later settled in Oregon. 00:30:59.000 --> 00:30:65.000 Growing up in the little town of Gervais, you could find me under the house fixing broken pipes, 00:31:05.000 --> 00:31:09.000 in the kitchen remodeling the sink that fell through our 80 year old floor, 00:31:09.000 --> 00:31:15.000 or in the garage helping my grandpa out with his side job '" mechanics. 00:31:15.000 --> 00:31:19.000 Every once in a while, I'd be hammering a nail or prying a pipe 00:31:19.000 --> 00:31:25.000 and I'd hit him in the hand, I'd hit him in the finger, or I'd hit him in the mouth. 00:31:25.000 --> 00:31:30.000 I must have hit him enough times because he doesn't have any more teeth. [laughter] 00:31:30.000 --> 00:31:33.000 Every time I accidentally hit him 00:31:33.000 --> 00:31:37.000 he would yell in an emphatic voice, 'Catorce! 00:31:37.000 --> 00:31:42.000 To replace another maybe inappropriate expletive 00:31:42.000 --> 00:31:45.000 Consequently, 'Catorce! stuck. 00:31:45.000 --> 00:31:49.000 My grandparent's house as the epicenter of activity during high school. 00:31:49.000 --> 00:31:55.000 As a result, my friends were introduced to, and started using, 'Catorce! 00:31:55.000 --> 00:31:60.000 Before long, it spread throughout the school and I could hear it being used in the hallways. 00:32:00.000 --> 00:32:03.000 Sometimes by people I didn't even know. 00:32:03.000 --> 00:32:08.000 I still use, 'Catorce! '" literally the word fourteen '" 00:32:08.000 --> 00:32:14.000 to this day as an unorthodox way to address a problem, and to be different in today's conforming society. 00:32:14.000 --> 00:32:20.000 When I found out I was speaking at commencement, I struggled to come up with a perfect speech. 00:32:20.000 --> 00:32:27.000 I wanted a speech so perfect flowers would grow, a rainbow would pop up, 00:32:27.000 --> 00:32:33.000 and heck maybe out the Blazers back in the playoffs. [laughter and cheering] 00:32:33.000 --> 00:32:37.000 then I realized, I'm not perfect. 00:32:37.000 --> 00:32:43.000 We are not perfect. As a society we shouldn't strive to reach some inanimate 00:32:43.000 --> 00:32:48.000 disillusioned idea of perfection none of us will ever reach. 00:32:48.000 --> 00:32:53.000 Instead, when times get tough we should say 'Catorce!, 00:32:53.000 --> 00:32:57.000 never put ourselves down, and never stop imagining a better future. 00:32:57.000 --> 00:32:63.000 Albert Einstein once said, 'Imagination is more important than knowledge. 00:33:04.000 --> 00:33:08.000 Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world'. 00:33:08.000 --> 00:33:13.000 So, it is only fitting that on the fourteenth day of June 00:33:13.000 --> 00:33:17.000 for the class of 2014 00:33:17.000 --> 00:33:21.000 to say, 'Catorce!, You did it. 00:33:32.000 --> 00:33:37.000 OHSU Dean, Dr. Bret Lyman, 00:33:37.000 --> 00:33:44.000 will now introduce one of their outstanding nursing students who will share some of their thoughts with us. 00:33:48.000 --> 00:33:53.000 It is my pleasure, my honor and my privilege 00:33:53.000 --> 00:33:58.000 to introduce a nursing student who has completed the Gerontological Nursing Honors Program, 00:34:00.000 --> 00:34:07.000 the Nursing Honors Research Series, served as the president of the Monmouth Student Nurses Association, 00:34:07.000 --> 00:34:12.000 served on the Board of Directors for the Oregon Student Nurses Association, 00:34:12.000 --> 00:34:14.000 is graduating summa cum laude, 00:34:14.000 --> 00:34:22.000 and was a strength and a guide and a mentor and a friend to so many people throughout her nursing school journey. 00:34:24.000 --> 00:34:28.000 The recipient of the Golden Lamp Award this year is 00:34:28.000 --> 00:34:32.000 Tamara Whittle, and I'm pleased to introduce her now. 00:34:45.000 --> 00:34:50.000 I would be remised to talk about the future of nursing without first revisiting the past. 00:34:53.000 --> 00:34:60.000 I have with me today the Lamp of Knowledge, '" a traditional symbol of the nursing profession and of higher education '" 00:35:00.000 --> 00:35:03.000 inspired by Florence Nightingale, 00:35:03.000 --> 00:35:08.000 who become know as the "lady with the lamp" after making her rounds in military hospitals 00:35:08.000 --> 00:35:11.000 by the light of the lamp that she carried. 00:35:11.000 --> 00:35:16.000 Nightingale dedicated her life to all phases of nursing 00:35:16.000 --> 00:35:20.000 setting an example of compassion, commitment to patient care, 00:35:20.000 --> 00:35:24.000 and leadership in hospital administration. 00:35:24.000 --> 00:35:27.000 She is known as the founder of modern nursing. 00:35:27.000 --> 00:35:32.000 The profession that we, the Oregon Health and Science University School of Nursing 00:35:32.000 --> 00:35:36.000 on the campus of Western Oregon University, 00:35:36.000 --> 00:35:40.000 Class of 2014, are about to enter. 00:35:40.000 --> 00:35:46.000 Our education has taught us that the nursing profession is multifarious, 00:35:46.000 --> 00:35:53.000 requiring a need for nurses who demonstrate caring, compassion, and integrity; 00:35:53.000 --> 00:35:59.000 who are capable of thinking critically; who desire to advocate for their patients; 00:35:59.000 --> 00:35:65.000 and who reflect the knowledge and skills necessary to provide competent, patient-centered care. 00:36:05.000 --> 00:36:12.000 Today's 'lamp of knowledge' is reflected in our commitment to these endeavors. 00:36:12.000 --> 00:36:20.000 Healthcare is changing rapidly in the United States, and nurses, who represent the largest segment of the health care workforce 00:36:20.000 --> 00:36:25.000 have an immense capacity to drive that change. 00:36:25.000 --> 00:36:28.000 Transforming nursing practice 00:36:28.000 --> 00:36:32.000 through the provision of care across the spectrum of health care settings; 00:36:32.000 --> 00:36:36.000 and with a focus on practicing to the full extent of our education 00:36:36.000 --> 00:36:44.000 and training to improve the health and quality of life of the individuals, families, and populations in our care 00:36:44.000 --> 00:36:47.000 Transforming nursing education 00:36:47.000 --> 00:36:55.000 through competence not only in the direct care of patients, but in leadership, research, and systems improvement; 00:36:55.000 --> 00:36:64.000 through a commitment to lifelong learning; and with a goal of increasing the number of nurses holding baccalaureate and doctoral degrees 00:37:04.000 --> 00:37:08.000 And finally, transforming nursing leadership. 00:37:08.000 --> 00:37:12.000 through involvement in leadership at all levels, from the bedside to the boardroom, 00:37:12.000 --> 00:37:19.000 lending knowledge and perspective of patient and family at the administrative level; 00:37:19.000 --> 00:37:24.000 and through teamwork that improves patient outcomes, reduces cost and medical errors, 00:37:24.000 --> 00:37:28.000 and increases job satisfaction for nurses. 00:37:28.000 --> 00:37:32.000 Class of 2014 graduates '" 00:37:32.000 --> 00:37:36.000 the future of nursing is in your hands 00:37:36.000 --> 00:37:39.000 You have the power to affect great change. 00:37:39.000 --> 00:37:43.000 Whether you're drawn to caring for individuals and populations 00:37:43.000 --> 00:37:50.000 in medical facilities, in schools or communities, or even in peoples homes 00:37:50.000 --> 00:37:55.000 opportunities abound for you to drive the changes that will advance health for all 00:37:55.000 --> 00:37:62.000 Take pride in your education, be confident in the unique insight and perspective that you bring to the table. 00:38:02.000 --> 00:38:07.000 Use your voice in the collaborative effort to transform the healthcare system. 00:38:07.000 --> 00:38:12.000 And don't forget to carry your lamp to light the way. So, I promise I will be brief. 00:44:56.000 --> 00:44:62.000 Today, graduates, is all about you, the graduates and your families. 00:45:02.000 --> 00:45:10.000 It is a day to celebrate the journey you have had to endure not only for four years, or five, 00:45:10.000 --> 00:45:18.000 but for a lifetime; a lifetime of dreams and goals that you had set for yourself. 00:45:18.000 --> 00:45:24.000 Go back to your first childhood memories, for a moment. 00:45:24.000 --> 00:45:29.000 When was the first time you thought about 'what you wanted to do when you grew up?' 00:45:29.000 --> 00:45:33.000 Who was the first person to ask you this question? 00:45:33.000 --> 00:45:40.000 Did you fulfill this dream? Did you change your mind? 00:45:40.000 --> 00:45:44.000 There are four things I would like to highlight today: 00:45:44.000 --> 00:45:48.000 First, value the importance of your journey, 00:45:48.000 --> 00:45:52.000 knowing where you've been and who you are. 00:45:52.000 --> 00:45:57.000 Up to this point, your life has probably taken many turns, 00:45:57.000 --> 00:45:65.000 I too experienced many life changing events even prior to my own Commencement Ceremony back in 2000. 00:46:05.000 --> 00:46:09.000 Wow, that seems like a long time ago! 00:46:09.000 --> 00:46:16.000 My parents brought my brothers and me to the U.S. in search of a better life and opportunities. 00:46:16.000 --> 00:46:24.000 I know there are families here that have gone through transitions and changes in order to overcome barriers. 00:46:24.000 --> 00:46:31.000 My obstacles were that my family had to work hard to fulfill our basic needs, 00:46:31.000 --> 00:46:35.000 we did not understand the education system in the United States 00:46:35.000 --> 00:46:39.000 and my parents did not speak English. 00:46:39.000 --> 00:46:45.000 Back then the thought of having a College degree could not seem furthest from reality, 00:46:45.000 --> 00:46:51.000 yet the dream of having a College Degree prevailed through-out this journey. 00:46:51.000 --> 00:46:57.000 Today it is important for you to value your ability to overcome obstacles, 00:46:57.000 --> 00:46:62.000 to transform, to look for the open spaces and take risks. 00:47:02.000 --> 00:47:08.000 Second, be willing to accept and embrace change. 00:47:08.000 --> 00:47:14.000 When we proactively embrace change and we learn to accept it as part of our life, 00:47:14.000 --> 00:47:21.000 we reach a level of understanding in life that some might even call wisdom. 00:47:21.000 --> 00:47:25.000 Change in today's society is the norm. 00:47:25.000 --> 00:47:30.000 In my case a change that was so overwhelming and uncertain 00:47:30.000 --> 00:47:36.000 evolved into my passion and the reason why I go to work every day. 00:47:36.000 --> 00:47:40.000 I encourage you to welcome and embrace change 00:47:40.000 --> 00:47:48.000 because you will inevitably evolve, transform and grow into a stronger person. 00:47:48.000 --> 00:47:55.000 By accepting and learning from change it becomes our teacher rather than our enemy. 00:47:55.000 --> 00:47:59.000 Third, value your college education and experience, 00:47:59.000 --> 00:47:67.000 and trust that your education and skills along with your passion will take you where you are meant to be. 00:48:07.000 --> 00:48:10.000 After graduating from High School 00:48:10.000 --> 00:48:17.000 I worked as an Instructional Assistant in Special Education in an Elementary School. 00:48:17.000 --> 00:48:22.000 The work experience I acquired as an Instructional Assistant in Special Education 00:48:22.000 --> 00:48:27.000 is what drove my interest in pursuing a career in the education field. 00:48:27.000 --> 00:48:35.000 And thanks to the opportunities, both academic and extracurricular, that were provided here at Western Oregon University, 00:48:36.000 --> 00:48:42.000 I found the passion to make an impact in greater society by working with underrepresented populations. 00:48:42.000 --> 00:48:49.000 First as a classroom teacher and today as an Elementary Principal in Salem-Keizer Public Schools. 00:48:49.000 --> 00:48:57.000 Finally, be optimistic and enthusiastic about the difference you will make and are making in the world, 00:48:57.000 --> 00:48:63.000 don't be afraid to make mistakes. Make sure you laugh and smile every day. 00:49:03.000 --> 00:49:07.000 Laughter keeps you healthy and it lightens the load. 00:49:07.000 --> 00:49:15.000 As I read on a Facebook Post, 'Don't take life too seriously, nobody makes it out alive anyway!' 00:49:20.000 --> 00:49:24.000 You are very fortunate to have your family support you. 00:49:24.000 --> 00:49:27.000 in different ways throughout this journey. 00:49:27.000 --> 00:49:32.000 Your parents, family and friends have walked along your side. 00:49:32.000 --> 00:49:40.000 To all of you, moms, dads, siblings, husbands, wives and children; 00:49:40.000 --> 00:49:48.000 today is a celebration of a shared accomplishment. One of many more to come! 00:49:48.000 --> 00:49:51.000 As you step out into your career discipline 00:49:51.000 --> 00:49:57.000 you will draw from your previous experiences as well as from what you are learning out in the field. 00:49:57.000 --> 00:49:64.000 Whether you are saving lives in a hospital, teaching economically disadvantaged students in a K through 12 classroom, 00:50:04.000 --> 00:50:10.000 or developing software, stay true to who you are and your convictions, 00:50:10.000 --> 00:50:18.000 nevertheless it is wise to change your opinion on topics, it helps you grow 00:50:18.000 --> 00:50:23.000 We all shsare a moral, ethical, and professional responsibility 00:50:23.000 --> 00:50:28.000 of making sure that we contribute to make this world a better place 00:50:28.000 --> 00:50:33.000 for us and for future generations. 00:50:33.000 --> 00:50:38.000 Congratulations Graduates of 2014.
