WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.000 Music. 00:00:04.000 --> 00:00:09.000 I decided to major in Earth Science at Western because I wanted a smaller more intimate campus. 00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:13.000 I came from a larger town and I love that I can walk to my classes or anywhere I need to go. 00:00:13.000 --> 00:00:20.000 Music. 00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:27.000 Two of my favorite classes in Earth Science at Western right now are Sedimentary Geology and GIS. 00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:33.000 In Sedimentary Geology we look at Sedimentary rocks and consider their textures and mineral composition 00:00:33.000 --> 00:00:35.000 to determine their origins. 00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:43.000 In GIS, we use techniques in digital map compilation, digital image processing, and analysis of data sets to find geologic patterns. 00:00:43.000 --> 00:00:49.000 I think one of the best things about Western Oregon is we have the opportunity for one on one hands on experience. 00:00:49.000 --> 00:00:60.000 For my independent study, I'm working closely with Dr. Templeton on cataloging, organizing, and cutting volcanic rocks that he collected from Newberry Volcano in central Oregon. 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:08.000 Besides cutting in the rock room, Dr. Templeton and I review on the map where the rocks were picked up just to get a better understanding of the volcanic history. 00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:14.000 Another thing I like about Western is that if I ever need help with any of my classes there's usually a place to go. 00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:18.000 For instance, I use the math tutoring center quite a bit. 00:01:18.000 --> 00:01:22.000 It's helpful to discuss homework with one of the math tutors just to see if I'm on the right track. 00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:25.000 My career goal is to be a volcanologist. 00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:30.000 And I'm so excited because this summer I'll be interning this summer with NASA as a student patrologist. 00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:35.000 And none of that would be possible without the help and support of the professors at Western. 00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:40.000 Western Oregon University is exactly what I was looking for, a rock solid education. 00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:46.000 Music.
