I would like to give a huge thank you to the Biology department and the rest of the faculty; first off for nominating me for this award, I really appreciate this honor. 00:23:30.000 --> 00:23:32.000 But also for teaching students like me. 00:23:32.000 --> 00:23:42.000 It was without a doubt a brutal challenge at times, but having survived makes the accomplishment that much greater '" for all of us! 00:23:42.000 --> 00:23:47.000 I would also like to thank everyone I've had the privilege of being on staff with in University Housing. 00:23:47.000 --> 00:23:54.000 You all have been my family here and I really value the support and friendship that you have given me. 00:23:54.000 --> 00:23:61.000 I would like to recognize the families and friends of all of us graduating today for your never-ending support throughout this experience. 00:24:01.000 --> 00:24:04.000 A special thank you goes to my mom. 00:24:04.000 --> 00:24:10.000 I know that no one else has ever done more for me than you have, and I will always remember that. 00:24:13.000 --> 00:24:24.000 So the other day I was hard at work writing a term paper, which of course means that I found myself on Buzz Feed reading some 'super important things'. 00:24:24.000 --> 00:24:32.000 One was a list called 17 things people born in the early 90s are currently experiencing. 00:24:32.000 --> 00:24:38.000 Most of the list was typical Buzz Feed but one thing that stuck with me is this idea that we're in a stage of our lives 00:24:38.000 --> 00:24:45.000 when we feel defined by our future, and that our plans for what's next are more important than the people that we are today. 00:24:45.000 --> 00:24:51.000 It's important to plan for the future, but we must remember that we don't live there. 00:24:51.000 --> 00:24:54.000 We can only live in the current moment, here and now. 00:24:54.000 --> 00:24:64.000 So remember to take it in, enjoy the present. See the value in every experience. This, right now, is where the action is. 00:25:04.000 --> 00:25:08.000 Don't let it pass you by. 00:25:08.000 --> 00:25:15.000 This is a bittersweet celebration '" this moment disappears as we move on to our next adventures. 00:25:15.000 --> 00:25:26.000 At the end of every year, I've listened to the Green Day lyrics: It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right, I hope you had the time of your life. 00:25:26.000 --> 00:25:32.000 Class of 2015! I hope that you had the time of your life. 00:25:32.000 --> 00:25:37.000 Applause. 00:25:37.000 --> 00:25:42.000 Hello class of 2015! 00:25:42.000 --> 00:25:55.000 Faculty, staff, family, friends, and loved ones. I am very honored to be up here and I am very honored to be speaking to you today and so excited to be celebrating with you all! 00:25:55.000 --> 00:25:67.000 Many of us have been asked the question 'what are you doing after graduation?' Some of you might share my response: I don't know. 00:26:08.000 --> 00:26:10.000 I have a friend in her 30's. 00:26:10.000 --> 00:26:16.000 She recently shared some uncertainties in her life. I found myself immediately reassured. 00:26:16.000 --> 00:26:21.000 Someone who has their life together, from my viewpoint, didn't know either! 00:26:21.000 --> 00:26:29.000 Then I started to panic realizing this not knowing thing, it never stops! 00:26:29.000 --> 00:26:35.000 But I'm learning that this mystery of not knowing is what sustains our lives. 00:26:35.000 --> 00:26:42.000 Because as Neale Donald Walsch says, Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. 00:26:42.000 --> 00:26:49.000 If we all knew everything there would be no adventure, no need for collaboration. 00:26:57.000 --> 00:26:60.000 In the waiting periods of life we are still learning. 00:27:00.000 --> 00:27:04.000 We can be active in the present moment of not knowing by 00:27:04.000 --> 00:27:10.000 First, doing what we love. It sound clich', but it's important. 00:27:10.000 --> 00:27:18.000 Second, by trying new things with an open mind. Get involved and stay involved. 00:27:18.000 --> 00:27:28.000 As we graduate and enter a new stage of life remember, as one of my psychology professors taught me that, It's ok to be a beginner. 00:27:28.000 --> 00:27:31.000 No experience we have will be wasted. 00:27:31.000 --> 00:27:38.000 Last, we can be active in the present moment of not knowing by being grateful. 00:27:38.000 --> 00:27:41.000 Our attitude is our choice. 00:27:41.000 --> 00:27:52.000 During my four years here, this place gradually became my home. The support I received from all of you has meant so much to me. 00:27:52.000 --> 00:27:61.000 Thank you also to mom, dad, and sister for giving your constant support, love, and encouragement. 00:28:01.000 --> 00:28:06.000 I'm grateful to God for all of the above and more. 00:28:06.000 --> 00:28:09.000 My mom wrote me a note after I won this award. 00:28:09.000 --> 00:28:17.000 It said, you are equipped to go forward, but stay humble, in that you still have much yet to learn. 00:28:17.000 --> 00:28:25.000 We will leave this place with cherished memories and a piece of paper, that will arrive in a couple months. 00:28:25.000 --> 00:28:31.000 The paper proclaims we are equipped with knowledge, with tools, and with experience. 00:28:32.000 --> 00:28:38.000 We must not forget that we have more to learn as every decision we make will impact our futures. 00:28:38.000 --> 00:28:46.000 So, if you know what you are doing, congratulations! And if you don't know, congratulations! 00:28:46.000 --> 00:28:52.000 Not knowing is not failure, it's just an answer that requires research. 00:28:52.000 --> 00:28:58.000 Applause. 00:28:58.000 --> 00:28:65.000 Good afternoon. Let me start by saying how honored I am to be here with you today, 00:29:05.000 --> 00:29:14.000 among administrators, faculty, staff, and you my brothers and sisters, the Western Oregon University graduating class of 2015. 00:29:14.000 --> 00:29:19.000 Cheering. 00:29:19.000 --> 00:29:23.000 What you have achieved to arrive here today is no small feat. 00:29:23.000 --> 00:29:28.000 Let's also to give a special shot out to our professors and classmates 00:29:28.000 --> 00:29:32.000 especially those of you in the Master's in Interpreting Studies Program. 00:29:32.000 --> 00:29:36.000 Cheering. 00:29:36.000 --> 00:29:41.000 Thank you for every time you engaged in critical, conscious dialogue with me. 00:29:41.000 --> 00:29:44.000 And family and friends 00:29:44.000 --> 00:29:48.000 thank you, we couldn't do this without all of your support. 00:29:48.000 --> 00:29:53.000 I have friends in family in from California and Washington to be here with me today. 00:29:53.000 --> 00:29:62.000 You all supported me with your laughter, and many of you saw me through tears. 00:30:02.000 --> 00:30:06.000 I am so thankful for each and every one of you. 00:30:06.000 --> 00:30:09.000 I love you and thank you for your encouragement. 00:30:09.000 --> 00:30:18.000 Okay so we were instructed not to be political in our remarks here today but, 00:30:18.000 --> 00:30:28.000 as Audre Lorde teaches us, the personal is political. So let me tell you what the last few years and, the coming year's mean to me. 00:30:28.000 --> 00:30:33.000 Deciding to obtain your undergraduate or graduate degree required action. 00:30:33.000 --> 00:30:37.000 It wasn't always easy, but you did it. 00:30:37.000 --> 00:30:45.000 Bell hooks, in her book Teaching to Transgress, writes about learning as a revolutionary process. 00:30:45.000 --> 00:30:48.000 One that changes the mind. 00:30:48.000 --> 00:30:52.000 Our money has been spent on a degree, yes 00:30:52.000 --> 00:30:56.000 but because of our actions, our minds have been changed. 00:30:56.000 --> 00:30:65.000 Because of our actions, we leave WOU with degree in hand and a revolutionary vision for our futures. 00:31:05.000 --> 00:31:12.000 Cherrie Moraga, cultural activist and feminist theorist writes of bridges that lead us to consciousness. 00:31:12.000 --> 00:31:20.000 My education, because I do believe it is a bridge, has led me to be a more socially conscious person. 00:31:20.000 --> 00:31:33.000 My education has given me the opportunity to meet and interact with wonderful people across this globe who have opened my mind, who have challenged and who stretched my thinking. 00:31:33.000 --> 00:31:44.000 But, formal education is only one piece of our intersectional being. There is no substitute for the lived experiences that we have and will encounter. 00:31:44.000 --> 00:31:60.000 We will all struggle at some point, and already have, with finances, with careers, with love, and with morality. If we are wise, we learn from those experiences too. 00:32:00.000 --> 00:32:05.000 We are called to act in this world. 00:32:05.000 --> 00:32:16.000 When faced with tough decisions, remember all that you have learned in your academic years and remember your roots. Your communities, your families, your cultures. 00:32:16.000 --> 00:32:28.000 Let all of those actions that have shaped the past, shape our consciousness and our capabilities toward radical, brave, even political decision making. 00:32:28.000 --> 00:32:39.000 Graduates, with degrees in hand, we are called to act. Every generation has a social responsibility to leave this world better than the way we found it. 00:32:39.000 --> 00:32:47.000 We are called upon to leave an imprint on this world. While your degrees may collect dust, your dreams never do. 00:32:47.000 --> 00:32:49.000 Assume positions of leadership. 00:32:49.000 --> 00:32:57.000 Be transformational forces of change in this world. I don't know what type of imprint you plan on leaving upon this world. 00:32:57.000 --> 00:32:66.000 Whether it's small scale change, or the start of a revolution, let us engage, grow, and inspire all those around us. Thank you! 00:33:06.000 --> 00:33:12.000 Applause. 00:33:12.000 --> 00:33:25.000 OHSU Interim Associate Campus Dean, Dr. Angie Docherty (Docker-tee), will now introduce one of their outstanding nursing students who will share some of their thoughts with us. 00:33:29.000 --> 00:33:32.000 The Golden Lamp Award. 00:33:32.000 --> 00:33:41.000 This award is based on the American National Association Code for professional conduct and the Florence Nightingale Pledge. 00:33:41.000 --> 00:33:56.000 And is given in recognition of exemplary demonstration of scholarship, leadership, professional commitment, innovative contributions, and humanitarian ideals. 00:33:56.000 --> 00:33:64.000 The Monmouth campus Oregon Health and Science University recipient of this award is Kacie Svesko. 00:34:04.000 --> 00:34:07.000 Applause. 00:34:07.000 --> 00:34:13.000 To start, I am truly humbled, honored and grateful to be here. 00:34:13.000 --> 00:34:24.000 When I first started nursing school my opinion was fixed, nurses were not saints. They do not grant wishes, bestow miracles or wear capes. 00:34:24.000 --> 00:34:34.000 With such mythical exaggerations flying around I was petrified that a patient would literally expect me to pull pudding from my pocket. 00:34:34.000 --> 00:34:42.000 Although it's easy to sentimentalize the field of nursing, the secret is' nursing has become an extreme sport. 00:34:42.000 --> 00:34:48.000 And nursing school itself is quite similar to Indian Jones. 00:34:48.000 --> 00:34:53.000 You dedicate years chasing adventure, embarking on dangerous escapades. 00:34:53.000 --> 00:34:63.000 while we were stuck memorizing the pathophysiology of autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura everyone else was watching Frozen. 00:35:04.000 --> 00:35:11.000 We were trained to disable real life booby traps; never let a 93 year old with a walker back you into a corner. 00:35:12.000 --> 00:35:25.000 We also learned that if you're not careful enough you can get your heart ripped out, either by a patient half your size, or by nurses who have 'been doing it that way since before you were born'. 00:35:25.000 --> 00:35:31.000 As we step towards the future we are faced with more complicated diseases and mutating superbugs, 00:35:31.000 --> 00:35:35.000 requiring nurses to become much more than the kissers of boo-boos. 00:35:35.000 --> 00:35:45.000 They must balance the needs at the bedside while simultaneously fulfilling the roles of the educator, politician, scientist, pacesetter and practitioner. 00:35:45.000 --> 00:35:56.000 Comparably to cliff diving, it is only with knowledge to determine how high and how far, poised with moxie to dare to dive or to choose to cannonball, that we can make an impactful splash. 00:35:56.000 --> 00:35:64.000 And it is in this discovery that I found love to be the underlying force of it all. 00:36:04.000 --> 00:36:11.000 In order to capture greatness you have to fall in love. You have to find that itch inside and scratch it. 00:36:11.000 --> 00:36:20.000 Many people have dreams and a lot of people make goals but the difference between achievement and disappointment is action. 00:36:20.000 --> 00:36:35.000 Quite parallel to running a marathon or from a boulder for that matter, accomplishment necessitates endurance. Success is only achieved by those who never give up. 00:36:35.000 --> 00:36:42.000 But love is risky, especially in our day in age where kindness is all too often mistakenly perceived as weakness. 00:36:42.000 --> 00:36:46.000 Which leads many people to play down their passion. 00:36:46.000 --> 00:36:53.000 However, it's only through having the tenacity to try that we can make such record breaking gains. 00:36:53.000 --> 00:36:62.000 It is with calculated risk and technological advances that we are now able to surgically repair birth defects within the womb. 00:37:02.000 --> 00:37:14.000 It is with passionate determination that nurses are advancing the clinical practice of proton beam therapy, precisely eradicating tumors found within the most critical of bodily regions. 00:37:14.000 --> 00:37:20.000 So don't let fear hold you back, make you hesitate, waffle, or dilly-dally. 00:37:20.000 --> 00:37:24.000 Learn to be present in the moment, patient with your progress 00:37:24.000 --> 00:37:29.000 and forget about sweeping today's possibilities under tomorrow's rug. 00:37:29.000 --> 00:37:33.000 When I started nursing school, I thought my opinion was fixed. 00:37:33.000 --> 00:37:43.000 And even with time, I know some things will never change. Laughter will always be the best medicine, and an ounce of prevention is still worth a pound of cure. 00:37:43.000 --> 00:37:51.000 However in learning to risk, daring to love and harassing adrenaline, my beliefs have transformed. 00:37:51.000 --> 00:37:59.000 And as a nurse I witness miracles everyday. And oh look I can pull pudding from my pocket. Thank you! 00:38:00.000 --> 00:38:13.000 Applause. 00:38:13.000 --> 00:38:22.000 At this time, I would like to ask Mr. Paul Kyllo, president of our Alumni Association to please come to the podium. 00:38:28.000 --> 00:38:42.000 Good afternoon. Graduates, families, staff, faculty, and visitors, I want to be the first to welcome the class of 2015 into the alumni association. 00:38:42.000 --> 00:38:44.000 You all are part of it now 00:38:44.000 --> 00:38:47.000 Applause. 00:38:47.000 --> 00:38:53.000 We have a special gift for you as you walk out the door so be sure to pick it up, okay? 00:38:53.000 --> 00:38:64.000 It is my privilege to present the Alumni Award of Excellence. 00:39:04.000 --> 00:39:09.000 This award is presented to the alumnist who has achieved distinction on a professional level. 00:39:09.000 --> 00:39:16.000 Who has been involved with the community and whose integrity, stature, and demonstrated ability 00:39:16.000 --> 00:39:20.000 are such that faculty, staff, students, and alumni 00:39:20.000 --> 00:39:23.000 of Western Oregon can rightfully take pride in. 00:39:23.000 --> 00:39:29.000 The winner of this year's Alumni Award of Excellence is Dr. Lance Marr. 00:39:29.000 --> 00:39:34.000 Lance graduate from Western Oregon in 1993. 00:39:34.000 --> 00:39:41.000 With a bachelor's degree in Biology and he played basketball on the men's team. 00:39:41.000 --> 00:39:53.000 After being graduated from Western, Lance attended medical school at Oregon Health Science University and is currently a practicing urologist. 00:39:53.000 --> 00:39:61.000 He specializes in micro and minimally invasive surgery robotics. 00:40:01.000 --> 00:40:10.000 He also is an active supporter of the men's basketball program and each year plans, sponsors, and raises funds for the team 00:40:10.000 --> 00:40:13.000 through hosting a basketball alumni night. 00:40:13.000 --> 00:40:23.000 He generously gives his time and support to the athletics program and to the athletes here at Western Oregon and for that we are very grateful. 00:40:23.000 --> 00:40:32.000 It is his dedication, passion, and commitment to Western and the future success that has won him this prestigious award. 00:40:32.000 --> 00:40:38.000 It is my honor to present this year's Alumni Award of Excellence to Dr. Lance Marr. 00:40:38.000 --> 00:40:49.000 Applause. 00:40:49.000 --> 00:40:59.000 I'd just like to say thank you and it's an honor to celebrate the class of 2015. I'm an elective official whose given hundreds and thousands of speeches and this speech scares me to death. 00:45:21.000 --> 00:45:28.000 My biggest fear is that I'll bore you. 00:45:28.000 --> 00:45:40.000 What do I say? and so do as I say not as I do. 00:45:40.000 --> 00:45:48.000 And when I asked you to let this old man ball from his own personal experiences, I'm not going to quote from some historical figure. 00:45:48.000 --> 00:45:57.000 I'm not going to quote from some famous person, I want to do it from my own personal experience and please be patient with me and allow me to do it. 00:45:57.000 --> 00:45:68.000 And explain something I'd like to offer you but it's not about me you got to believe this, it's about you. 00:46:08.000 --> 00:46:16.000 Don't be afraid, don't be like me. 00:46:16.000 --> 00:46:25.000 If you look, and I'm not a religious man, at the Bible and the reason that the Bible fascinates me as a piece of literature 00:46:25.000 --> 00:46:33.000 is that it's filled with phrases and words that when they express an idea it's magnificent. 00:46:33.000 --> 00:46:43.000 Fear not, be not afraid, do not be afraid, don't be afraid. 00:46:54.000 --> 00:46:63.000 Years ago, in the hills of Westbigot Virginia, in the coal mining areas I was in when I was a teenager 00:47:03.000 --> 00:47:09.000 I'd go in and sit at the foot of my grandmother's bed. 00:47:09.000 --> 00:47:15.000 My grandmother helped raise me because my mother had Parkinson's disease. She was so sick we had to take care of her. 00:47:16.000 --> 00:47:20.000 And my grandmother with her little rosary beads in her hand, 00:47:20.000 --> 00:47:28.000 reading her little Reader's Digest, I worshipped her and I'd sit at the end of her bed and say, "Grandma I'm so scared." 00:47:28.000 --> 00:47:38.000 I'm so worried and agonized, I don't know if I can do well in the football game I don't know if I can get the grades to make mom and dad happy, I don't know if anyone will ever like me. 00:47:38.000 --> 00:47:42.000 And my grandmother said to me once and I'll never forget it. 00:48:05.000 --> 00:48:16.000 I worship her, I miss her, I'd give anything if she could be here today. Don't be afraid to make a decision. 00:48:16.000 --> 00:48:26.000 Do you know how many times in politics the failure to make a decision has lead to disastrous consequences? 00:48:26.000 --> 00:48:31.000 Don't be afraid to make a decision. 00:48:31.000 --> 00:48:34.000 Even if it ends up wrong, 00:48:34.000 --> 00:48:40.000 you're not going to get away with that for very long, you cannot waste a moment, don't be afraid to make a decision. 00:48:40.000 --> 00:48:44.000 Don't be afraid to lose, oh this is easy for me to say. 00:48:44.000 --> 00:48:53.000 I have lost, do not be afraid to lose. Oh it's going to hurt. Oh it's going to hurt. 00:48:53.000 --> 00:48:57.000 Don't be afraid to lose. 00:48:57.000 --> 00:48:66.000 And to try again and again and again. You got to keep trying. 00:49:06.000 --> 00:49:11.000 You got to trust me on this, you got to keep trying. 00:49:11.000 --> 00:49:19.000 Don't be afraid to start at the bottom, don't be afraid. 00:49:19.000 --> 00:49:26.000 And watch this one, it has already been referred to by one of these outstanding students. 00:49:26.000 --> 00:49:35.000 If you don't know what you're doing tomorrow or the next day, I'll bet some of you don't, don't be afraid. 00:49:35.000 --> 00:49:41.000 Don't be afraid. 00:49:41.000 --> 00:49:52.000 And if you have a plan, I'm going to tell you, don't go get scared when it gets loose on you because it will get loose on you. 00:49:52.000 --> 00:49:59.000 I had a plan, want to hear about my plan? I'll tell you about my plan. 00:49:59.000 --> 00:49:67.000 When I was on the Salem city council I was hot. When I was in the legislature in the 80's I was hot. 00:50:07.000 --> 00:50:17.000 I had a lot going, I had all the plans. I was going to be in local government, state government, federal government, and run for congress. I was hot. 00:50:17.000 --> 00:50:28.000 And then I ran into the May 1984 primary and on that night when the first election results came in I was 10 points down and I never got any closer. 00:50:28.000 --> 00:50:33.000 I was crushed. 00:50:33.000 --> 00:50:41.000 I had no job, Margie, whose somewhere in the audience, my wife and I had a little boy named Peter, I had no job. 00:50:41.000 --> 00:50:51.000 I got a call from a guy named Myers, said, "I want you to come work for us." He was the president of Western Oregon State College. 00:50:51.000 --> 00:50:65.000 I would not be here today talking to you if I hadn't lost and had to make a change in the plans. Don't be afraid. 00:51:05.000 --> 00:51:09.000 Applause. 00:51:09.000 --> 00:51:15.000 My older brother is a remarkable person. 00:51:15.000 --> 00:51:20.000 Something was said about him in the military that I'll never forget, said to my father. 00:51:20.000 --> 00:51:30.000 He was a young lieutenant and they said, it was a senior officer, "You know what I like about lieutenant Courtney? He makes the best of the hand given to him." 00:51:30.000 --> 00:51:37.000 Don't be afraid of the hand that's dealt you. Don't be afraid, fear not. 00:51:37.000 --> 00:51:40.000 Make the best of it. 00:51:40.000 --> 00:51:44.000 Make the best of it. 00:51:44.000 --> 00:51:52.000 You know I'm talking too much about fear. 00:51:52.000 --> 00:51:56.000 But I'll tell you something, this one is really emotional for me. 00:51:56.000 --> 00:51:58.000 You see all those fans in the stands? 00:51:58.000 --> 00:51:62.000 Cheering. 00:52:02.000 --> 00:52:05.000 I'm going to tell you something. 00:52:05.000 --> 00:52:18.000 They'll always be in your grand stands.
